For those who might be interested, I was interviewed by Spencer Greenberg on the topic of secular gurus (surprising, I know).

Spencer is a bit of a rationalist type and was a nice guy to talk with. We actually went into some more depth than usual on a couple of topics, including Lab Leak discourse and Epstein conspiracies.

Their suggested blurb described the conversation as follows:

"On the Clearer Thinking Podcast, Spencer Greenberg and Chris Kavanagh discuss the tradition and application of skepticism, the qualities of secular gurus, and their impact on the cultural and political landscape."

Sadly, Matt was not present, so really only 50% of our power was represented.

ClearerThinking.org Podcast | The seductiveness of secular gurus (with Christopher Kavanagh)

What makes broad, all-encompassing worldviews so attractive in periods of institutional distrust? Why do charismatic figures become especially persuasive when they present themselves as suppressed truth tellers? How much of a guru's appeal comes from insight, and how much from theater? Why do people so often prefer a guide with certainty over an institution with caveats?

It’s okay, Chris. The Emperor didn’t go with Vader everywhere either…

Great podcast. It's fun to hear Chris be so serious and rhetorically careful.

Good well-thought out thrashing of a totally eternally thrashable subject.

Brave of you to come out as a Rationalist at 1:55:09, Chris! Always suspected but now it's confirmed and will the charge will dog you forever more.

Andreas Singer

Loved this. Thanks for posting. I'll be sharing with my conspiracy minded family members, as its one of th few pieces of content out there that presents a clear argument against conspiratorial thinking without the dismissive tone they like to point out (without taking in any of the words). I'm sure they'll try find it, but this will be a good start!

Enjoyed this. Couple of things were touched on reminded me of an excellent episode of Sean Carrolls podcast with Thi Nguyen talking and games, game-ification and "the seduction of clarity."

Very enjoyable.
