I assume that they're watching this show on Netflix. At the moment, only the first season is on there, though with season three coming in October, season two might be added soon.

Lady Gyokuyou and her ladies-in-waiting are the greenest flags in the show. Them being so nice and accepting of Maomao is so sweet. 🥰

There's an entire story of that military guy Jinshi mentions that's hidden in the background of the next few episodes, it's hard to put together on a first watch.

THIS is why we're clamoring so much for them to watch Dr Stone. Kenny and Montana are far more intelligent than most reactors. They would have a FIELD DAY with that show.

Yeah I love it when they take their time dissecting scenes. It's why I wish they'll do Lord of the Mysteries eventually. When it came out everyone was in a tizzy about how hard it is to understand and follow and there was reactor drama about channels that refused to pause or rewind scenes to understand them better, but I feel like Kenny and Montana would thrive with a show like that, bc they actually stop, rewind, theorize and dissect scenes. It's what drew me to them.

Yeah, chocolate is sometimes regarded as an aphrodisiac, though many exaggerate the claims quite highly. From what I know, Spanish conquistadores made some dubious claims initially that it served as an aphrodisiac when they first encountered it, and the claims have took off since then. If it worked in the past, it certainly doesn't really work nowadays, due to availability, we've probably all grown 100% immune to it, so if you see claims to the contrary in marketing material for brands, it's all BS. If you've had chocolate before in your life, odds are it won't really do anything for you. Still, it could work as one in this fictional Chinese setting where the vast majority of people never had it before. Of course, chocolate being available in this period of China to begin with is somewhat anachronistic and highly unlikely, given chocolate originates in the Americas. They mention South-West in the show as the trade route, which could referr to Europe/Africa, but it would not have been grown there yet as far as I know. Plus, there's not a huge amount of trade with Spain in the era this is meant to portray. so even if they can obtain it, it would be an extremely expensive luxury item, certainly available to the Emperor, but definitely not something that would be quite this easily and quickly given away. Ofc the show is entirely fictional to begin with so that skirts past most of the anachronisms. It's honestly quite surprising how many things we take for granted that would not have been available to people in the past.

It seems they use aphrodisiac pretty interchangeably with stimulant, making it more about "getting the blood flowing" than anything else as far as I can tell (might be generalizing). Also to be fair, while I'm no expert on the subject, from what I understand of other people talking about it the fictional version of China in this story is far too varied in influence to point to it being in any specific time period; the influences seem to cover a couple hundred years of Ming and Qing dynasty so locking it into any one era doesn't really work. So it's sort of like nothing and everything is anachronistic all at once. Like you said, real world inspirations but still a fictional setting with fictional history.

Yeah this show does foreshadowing really well, so it's definitely a fun one for making predictions based on little clues they add in.

This sometimes comes up but for curiosity sake, some character ages: Maomao - 17 Jinshi - 23 Gaoshun (Jinshi's attendant) - 36 Gyokuyou (Main consort) - 19 Lihua (blue haired consort) - 23 Hongniang (Head lady-in-waiting) - 30 The Emperor - 34 I think those are all the ones we know & have met (plus the Emperor), I don't know if the other ladies-in-waiting are known ages but I think they are all in the 17-21 range. If I'm not mistaken they follow the tradition of everyone "aging up" at the same time so there's no "when is this person's birthday" issues.

Yeah, it was fun! I’m trying to think of ones for hunterxhunter characters. Killua =cat obviously, for Kurapika I was thinking maybe an octopus because they’re smart and the tentacles =his chains? I’m having trouble with Gon and Leorio though. Hisoka=dolphin? They’re very talented animals, but from what I’ve heard/read they’re super horny? I’m not good at this, someone help🫠

The way Maomao can flip between deadpan and uninterested to giddy as a schoolgirl on a dime the SECOND drugs and medicine enter the picture is hilarious. The animation and Emi Lo's performance really sell it. 🤣🤣
