He was blamed for the death of Ah Duo and the emperor's first child. The child actually died due to honey but the lady in waiting who did it covered it uo and blamed the doctor. 2. The finger was part of a curse. After 3 years she began to blame Jinshi. It should also be noyed that untreated siphsyus damages the brain and canncause out of norma behavior like self harm. Basically Maomao's mother cut off her own finger and sent it to him as a curse. Theres another implicaton aith thatpackage but it wasnt as clearly addressed yet. 3. Lakan was told by the brothel owner than the woman is gone and berated him. He doesnt know where she is

Honestly a lot of blame goes to the madam for making him think that Fengxian was dead

I'm fairly certain that Maomao's mother Fengxian is voiced by the First Class Mage Methode from Frieren, as well as Winry from FMAB and Mina from MHA.

Also there is a nobel heirachy system going on. Lakan said his father was leader of the family. Thats not just the o your fatheris in charge. Hes like lord stark or Lannister's father from game of thrones. Him disobeying his father's order could get him comoletely disowned ajd take away everything.

I will say in Lakan’s defense of staying the three years he was sent away, we have to understand that in this time many children were more so considered to be property rather than their own person in most cases, especially when it came to noble families, such as this one Lakan’s father owned him, it didn’t matter that he was an adult at this point- what’s more was he mentioned his dad was his superior in the military so he was also his boss, so on two fronts he had no say in what he was to do, he just had to do as he was told

Very mild LN spoiler that will not cover anything important nor change the game below: In a later LN, LN11, we actually do get to see some of Lakan during his time abroad, he is not the focal point of that chapter AT ALL lol but he’s there and we can see how antsy he was to return to Fengxian

Spoilers ..... So MaoMao mother was being spiteful the two tips of the pinky that she sent in the letter was essentially a way of saying you've abandoned me and your child. That's what they meant as a curse essentially.

It's just like Vinland Saga; you CANNOT look at the world of Apothecary Diaries through a modern lens. The story and characters are directly tied to the time period it's set in. 🏯 Hopefully, the next episode will fill in any remaining pieces for them.

Lakan couldn’t come back earlier. Not only is his father the head of his Clan, he was also his superior officer. Disobeying orders and not being severely punished wouldn’t have been easy.

I’m sure it was easy enough to miss. I’ve read all the LNs as well so it’s easy to forget not everything knows all the small details. Hopefully everything will be cleared up next episode

I will also note, while I do think Lakan’s methods leave a lot to be desired, we should remember we see a lot of his actions through a lot of Mao Mao’s bias! Thinking back to ep 1 (because I was also rewatching) Lady Gyokuyou’s note was “it’s a sin to be ignorant” which is the base of his folly as well. And from what we’ve seen of him, he does want to be active in Mao Mao’s life (his prize was her living with him, he put his name on the line for her, has given her opportunities to win merit, etc). I do really love this episode for just contextualizing so much!

And tbh despite all that it feels implied that he would have come running if he had actually realized what was at stake. Ignorance is more to blame than simple inaction. Especially considering all those letters being withheld, which would have likely clued him in much sooner than 3 years.

This episode is when I went "o he's not a bad person, hes just autistic". I do think its important thatjust because he cannot see someones face doest mean he disrespects them or dehumanizes them.

And its not even clear if blame is needed there. Certainly at fault but hard to blame her for keeping him away from Fengxian after the pain and presumed mental break down he help caused

Finale spoilers: We learn next episode that Fengxian planned her visits with Lakan to coincide with her lunar cycle, without his knowledge. So this is even LESS on Lakan.

Not really Theres a difference between being cold and distance from people and dehumanizing them. He doesnt seem to think less of people or that theyre inferior or not worthy of being seen as humans or protected under law That is dehumanizing. He just has issues forming connections with indivuals. And tangent but I think its the connection he forms aith maomao's mother that causes him tk see hjm and not just hsr bejng his equal in chess or anything

I disagree there. Shes angry at him for abandoning her and not fulfilling promises implied if not spoken. Im her mind hendid what that one merchant son who was poisoned earlier in the season did. Got a girls hopes up and destroyed her when he moved on. If he bought her contract kut right then and there i doubt she'll be mad. Maybe a kittle grumpy at the lwsser payday but no 3 years of street walking and issues with that

Also easy to miss if you aren't familiar with older societies and nobility. The show does gloss over titles and society roles a lot. And not in a bad way. Thats part of the charm of the show, it doesnt go into deep explainations of how impotant certain things are to the country or society. But does make it take a little for unfamiliar audiences to realize.

So, on the topic of Lakan's face blindess: if Fengxian's was the first face he had seen, does that mean he couldn't even see his own in a reflective surface?

Ok I might be misremembering but I do believe the books mentioned he cannot see his own face either so Fengxian genuinely would’ve been the first face he saw

A lot of people viewed Lakan as a villain, but this episode completely changes that perspective. Once his backstory is revealed, it's clear that many of his actions stem from regret rather than malice. He wants to reconnect with Maomao and make up for the years he lost with his daughter. The finger-severing tradition carried different meanings in that era, ranging from punishment for wrongdoing to expressions of love or loyalty. In this situation, Fengxian was likely punished for becoming pregnant. The fingers sent to Lakan, believed to belong to Fengxian and Maomao, were meant as an act of atonement and a symbol of the suffering caused by their circumstances.

Hopefully you guys realize you were quick to judge and assume a lot about Lakan before this episode. Also his persona is a fox not a wolf. Jinshi literally called him a fox

They might have been quick to judge, but that's not their "fault", the writing was done in a way that you were meant to think he was a fully terrible person up to this point. Everyone that know him in the story so far has acted more or less repulsed to his existence. It's easy to see it was a matter or circumstance and mostly out of his hands in hindsight.
