Hey everyone!

Did some clean up and small rewrites for this Chapter. I also did more code work, with the music room in particular.

For the OG supports, some of you might remember Artemis had a music room back in CH1 and 2. It's since been removed or "blocked" (DJ Kink Studio on the main menu). A very quick story on that front. AVNs get a bad rap with music in particular. We used to be able to sign up with many platforms (Artlist, EpidemicSounds, etc.) but they've since changed their TOS to prohibit their content from being used in media that has pornographic content in it. This shot a lot of us devs in the kneecaps and severely limited our sources for music.

Anyways, as a result. I had to change a lot of the music format. Because of this, I had to do some coding gymnastics because I told myself to prevent more surprises in the future, I just renamed all music tracks to ch#track##. So if something stupid like this got worse, changing out tracks wouldn't effect the code, since the replacement track would carry the same name and the code wouldn't fuss about it. Back Chapters 1 and 2, the music room was real nice. You had album art, could see artist, track name, album, etc. It's honestly been so long now that it's been offline, I've forgotten what the technical hurdle was for the change. But since then, I've been working on it and refining my old code. Happy to finally say we'll see it back online for CH8. It'll be functional within the phone as well. Why this matters you say? Because part of the freeroam bit, the storymode variable disengages and the music let's you choose what to play while you navigate whatever the event the freeroam is. With MC's party being the spotlight for this chapter, real happy to finally have this re-implemented into Artemis.

I'll worry about making it look prettier later. But for those who want to learn more about the artist or just create a playlist of their favorite tracks, you can do so now.

But yeah. Music in AVNs has had quite the history. There are a couple tracks I've commissioned artists to do for me. But the majority of Book 2 featured music from Universal Production Music (Universal Studios, yes the film studio). As they were the only source I could find that had high quality artists AND allowed use in media that has adult content. The caveat is their contract is $2,500 and has to be renewed every 12 months. So, it's pretty pricy and I often find myself spending hours trying to find the perfect track still. That said, my hunt for a new home for music continues. A close friend of mine who's a media instructor has been dabbling in creating music as a hobby, so I might hire him if he's got the time. Hiring an artist for a specific track I'm collaborating on is still being worked on. (It's costing me about $1,000 since she's working closely with me on the lyrics. But also raising the price to give me full rights to track because she doesn't want to be associated with the adult part, lol.)

So, yeah... music....has quite the relationship with AVN devs.

Anywho, regardless. I'm happy that the music room will finally make its return. The main menu will now look complete without the disabled menu feeling like it's just taking up space.

Have yourselves a great week and stay cool n hydrated!

oh to have my music used in a game…..

Blood Of A Hero

Thanks for the update Digi! Some of my favorite songs have come from AVNs, it's a shame the hoops you have to jump through to just have them in your game 😭 I hope development continues to go well! Stay safe out there and have a fantastic week ❤️

Very interesting backstory, was not aware of those challenges. Appreciate the behind the scenes insight. 😊

The menu songs from Intertwined and Summer Scent both caught my attention immediately and lent credibility to the games, IMO. I have them both in local playlists. Not sure about Intertwined, but I know the SS dev made the music himself, and AI did only the vocals. That probably means they don't "own" any of the finished product, but at least nobody is going to be pulling his license.

Ah, yes. The great music claw-back that gutted so many AVN titles (including completed ones) of their signature sounds. Seems like just another kind of censorship, to me. Smart to move to relative song references in code rather than hard links to file names. Good idea. It does suck that you have to even think of these things instead of the creation of your game, though. Thanks for the update, @digi

👍💯🔥

There is a reason a lot of devs now create their own music with AI.

Thanks for the DevLog.👍😊 Yeah, I have seen many dev´s who have issues with music in their games.☹️

Right. But there's a reason why I'm going this route. There's strong opinions already with using AI. At least people will know I've exhausted other routes before resorting to using AI. Someone in my position has to be careful and show enough reason before making a choice like that.

The music control freaks have struck hard that is for sure. Blackthunder has been creating, with the help of a very qualified musical tallent, a number of directly game related songs for their games that are outstanding audio presentations. Maybe you can follow that example too? It would let you put the DJ Kink feature back into the game for those of us who like to play the music scores during game play as well as during just typical computer use. Just a thought..

OUCH on the UPM deal. That kind of deal HAS To hurt developers like you for sure!

The music industry (the actual people who own the licenses) being a bunch of DIKs doesn't really surprise me. But artists in general who frown over association with "adult content" really need to get over themselves or at least properly research the subject before making judgement calls based on preconceived opinions.. Since I've started playing AVNs, it introduced me to TONS of great music and artists I'd otherwise never have discovered. As a potential new fan and listener, it's not as if I'm gonna walk away thinking: "Haha, what a cool music for my *porn game*".. It's more along the lines of: "Oh damn, this music is awesome. I'm gonna listen to it more on my own and maybe look up more from the artist later.." They're getting exposure and plenty of new fans, which can be huge for some of the smaller ones especially. I'd imagine the source of that popularity should be mostly irrelevant. And frankly, there's no shame in being featured in some of the awesome games like Artemis, but to each their own I guess.

Apart from all the problems that affect music in games, whether copyrights or reservations by labels or artists to release their songs on certain platforms, music plays a big role in your games. It supports the action in the game in a special way. I think it's good that the artists are given another stage with the games to make their music known. I find almost all the tracks on iTunes and use them to compile my playlists. The performers will certainly benefit from this. A very good example is Drifty with its games "Leap of Faith" and especially "U4iA". I didn't even know artists like James Forest, Jay Danton, DayFox and many others and now their songs are playing in my car. Thanks for the update, Digi, have a nice week!

That's why I think AI music is a good thing at least for AVN
