Hello there and a warm welcome to what looks to be the 48th weekly update I've done this year. It's going to be a bit of a weird week in terms of #content as we await new games and pace ourselves with upcoming embargoes (no, we don't know anything about Half-Life 3), but perhaps slowing down a touch after delivering 11 videos in the last two weeks isn't such a bad thing.

Here's what the team are up to:

Tom is ploughing through a couple of reviews, kicking off with Tomb Raider Definitive Edition on Switch and Switch 2, stacked up against PS3 (!) and PS4. Yes, this is a weird one. Beyond that? How about Silent Hill 2 Xbox. Last week, Tom finished a sponsored video on the technology of Where Winds Meet, which we hope to run this week at some point.

Oliver is working right now on our Kirby's Air Riders review which should be up pretty soon. Sorry about the delay on that one. And yeeeessss Rich (ie me), we shall eventually get to that long-delayed Xbox Ally X double-header.

Speaking of Rich (ie me), I have now built our Steam Machine simulation PC. Specs? Ryzen 5 8500G (4nm, Zen 4, Zen 4c), 2x8GB 5600MHz DDR5 (real thing is SODIMM, remember?), Gigabyte B670 motherboard and an NVMe SSD. GPU? Probably going to use RX 6600 and RX 7600 to show the potential window of performance. Bazzite is the OS of choice, standard PS5 is our comparison point but do let me know of anything else you might be interested in. I'm also doing some Advanced Shader Delivery testing for the Ally X review. All of this in amongst the avalanche of admin tasks I have. Like 14 thumbnails for DF Clips, for starters.

John is still working on our big, BIG Xbox 360 DF Retro episode - but he will be our man for handling the Metroid Prime 4 review.

Alex is working on a festive sponsored video I'm really looking forward to seeing.

Sam - of course - continues to dominate the Digital Foundry webzone at digitalfoundry.net. Do pay it a visit and remember that Supporters get a fully ad-free experience on both web and mobile devices.

That's all for now - be sure to leave your comments, feedback and project suggestions in the empty box that Patreon supplies "below". Have a great week!

Go on lads, what do you know about Half Life 3?

The Knight Who Says Ni!

Just wanted to say I enjoyed seeing the team discussing Microsoft Windows issues during DF weekly. They really need to get there act together.

It would be great to compare the experience of using 3rd party stores (Epic, gog, xbox etc..) on the rog ally xbox x and on bazzite/steamos. What works, what doesn't? If it works altogether is a 'mouse free' day to day usage realistic?

VeryProfessionalDodo

Hey there, Bazzite regular user. "Mouse free" day to day usage is semi-realistic. If you can do it inside Big Picture Mode, you can always getaway without using a mouse, including managing games, windows, etc! However, if for example you want to change the surround sound from stereo to 5.1, you'll have to go to Desktop mode, and manually switch it in the settings. Despite this, you can still do this completely mouse free! If Steam is open in the background, it mediates input in the background, and you can use your controller to navigate your PC quite well. From my personal experience, navigating desktop with your controller is FAR better on Linux than on Windows, because you mostly don't run into situations where Windows just says "nah bro", and ignores your input, like in UAC prompts, or in logging in and out. Hope this helps!

Hi Rich, for simulating the Steam machine it might be helpful to use the CU masking feature of the amdgpu driver: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Radeon-Limit-CUs I have never tried that myself but this might be perfect to get a 28CU RDNA3 GPU. As a future independent idea: I always wanted to test this in order to make some cool scaling tests where you can scale compute width independent of memory bandwidth and maybe even keep compute the same and just scaling width and clock antiproportionally to one another so that the GFlop/s stay the same.

I think one cool thing to show in the "Steam Machine-like Machine" video would be not only the games with a native PS5 version, but also PS4 and PS4 games with back compat plus. Reallistically, we might want to play a good game from last gen, and in my opinion the Steam Machine's greatest advantage isn't in running the latest and greatest games, but also playing the back catalog in an improved way. For a bad example of a PS4 game something like Just Cause 3 and 4 would be a good comparison, and for a good PS4 game with back compat plus you could always go with Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Ghost of Tsushima to also highlight Sony games there. For the PS5 games, I think you should also use capped and uncapped games to really show the range of experiences there. Resident Evil and Spider Man I believe have both options, and Spider Man might show some of the issues with the 8GB VRAM buffer.

Can't wait to see what Tom comes up with on the Tomb Raider comparisons! : )

For the steam machine tests, it would be great to also compare with Windows on the same specs, also with VRAM limited games / configs. Is SteamOS helping mitigating the low VRAM issue (my guess is not really). Ray tracing capabilities also would be a good test. But don't focus to much on it, the strength of the steam machine isn't the latest AAA / path tracing games. (Maybe a comparison of a really broken game like Jedi Survivor ^^).

Can we get a quick look at the new ghost of yotei patch? Also please consider looking at sonic racing and digimon.

As much as anyone else who has read the leaks online.

This is totally giving: “In Theory: Can a 4TF Navi GPU Deliver a Next-Gen Console Experience - Feb 2020”

Not really a project suggestion but I tend to watch your older content once I've run out of new stuff: Alex's Tech Focus series is a favourite but I stumbled upon the DF Documentaries recently. I've only watched the Onrush one but it's absolutely brilliant - not sure how feasible that kind of thing is nowadays but it's absolutely top notch content and I'd love to see more features like that. Shame both the video and the game itself weren't better received.

3 architectures 1 comparison tomb raider on ARM, powerpc and x86, WOW

Peter Leatherbarrow

Regarding the Steam Machine simulation machine, would a comparison with some of the Too Big for Steam Deck games be worth doing? To test the 6x power quote and give people an idea of what could push the machine to its own limits.

Sven Dahlin

Hich @Rich! congratulations on your independence! The only thing that worries me is that you spend too much time on "admin task" and less time producing excellent content. Will you be able to catch up with the admin avalanche or is that an illusion (i.e. you need to organize things differently)?

Tom Raider! 🤭

Hi! I built an Orange Box last December using Bazzite and the orange Teenage Engineering case. My first desktop build! I'm shocked that my hardware I chose is so close to the Steam Machine spec. I initially used the 8600g's onboard graphics because I could not find a new compatible AMD GPU that meets the 180mm length requirement of this case. I eventually found a reasonably priced RX 6600 on eBay and it really did power up this machine into a nice 1080p living room machine. For about $900 overall it has seemed like a pretty fair deal but I've been checking since the release of RX 9060XT for a small single fan variant to no avail. I'm cautiously more optimistic of my investment with the pending release of the Steam Machine but would gladly buy any new single fan variant of a 16 gb AMD GPU but they simply do not exist. I'm considering I might have to abandon my Orange Box and build it into a Fractal Design Terra instead >.< I'm not expecting any miracles but I'm curious if you would consider testing with INT8 FSR 4 and the Decky Loader lsfg-vk plugin for your upcoming video to see if these unofficial pieces of software can help improve the longevity of the Steam Machine?

James Jackson

Just want to say Sam is doing a bang-up job on the website. It really adds to the video content! I visit every day.

The Tomb Raider thing is interesting. The original drip of Tomb Raider on PS4 took fantastic advantage of async GPU compute to great effect. (That console specific code would eventually get ported to the PC version once GPUs and drivers caught up.) the Switch 2 is absolutely capable of running quite a bit of that async GPU compute code, even outside of docked mode, so its disappointing to see what appears to be the PS3 version running seemingly with very few modifications — even though Switch 1 has a lot more RAM available. I hope they fix it for a physical version
