Hello everyone! Dang, this was a wild experience. IDK that I've ever CRIED during a horror movie because I was genuinely sad, but also scared and intrigued. 😂 What a ride. Please enjoy this reaction and I look forward to your comments! [Direct link here.]

My favorite fact about this movie is when the Norwegian is screaming at them, he's actually saying "Get away from that! That's not a dog, its a thing!", basically giving away the entire movie. When the movie was playing internationally, they had to change the Norwegian's language so the people in Norway would still be surprised!

Oh my get your popcorn ready for this one. I can’t wait to see your reaction to our sweet 4 legged friend in the beginning 😛😛😛

There's a great making of documentary on YouTube of The Thing that goes through the entire timeline, from conception to production to release and reception. Plus a ton of fun stories from Carpenter, Russell, and especially Rob Bottin, who did the practical effects (only 22 at the time!). Most, if not all of the effects, he had never done before. It's a good watch if you're interested. It's titled 'John Carpenter's The Thing Documentary'

If you want more Kurt Russell + John Carpenter, Escape from New York has one of Kurt's most iconic roles. If you want more Carpenter with The Thing vibes, They Live is a must, and it also has Keith David!

Fuck yes! 'Alien' has always been my favorite horror movie (technically sci-fi horror, or so I've been told), but 'The Thing' has always been a close second. Like 'Alien', this movie does such an amazing job in building its atmosphere, and soaking us deep in the tension. Here, fear of the unknown takes a backseat to pure paranoia. And also like 'Alien', this movie has such a smart protagonist. With 'The Thing', however, the nihilism gets cranked up to 11 in one of my favorite horror movie endings. There have been many theories about who's what in the end, with many pointing out that MacReady seems to have visible breath, whereas Childs doesn't, most likely meaning that Child is a Thing; and others claiming that there's something poisonous (such as gasoline) in the bottle that MacReady offers to him. I'm not even sure it matters, storytelling wise: the ambiguity allows us to believe what we want, and to let the paranoia overtake us.

Not that it would have been a massive spoiler—I mean, it was pretty inevitable the dog was the alien—, but I assume there must have been at least a few Norwegians in the US at the time it came out sitting in the cinema wondering why their date was so shocked that the dog's face exploded.

I am as much a Story-fan as much as I am a movie fan. I love when I get more. So the prequel made me excited for what happens before this movie and the comic for what happens after. I try to releasing expectation and allow myself to experience the story and see what happens next. I've had to do that with the prequel, Rings of Power, and Terminator movies. I can accept that they aren't perfect or don't meet the expectations of die hard fans. But I am totally grateful that they exist and I get to see more stories with characters and worlds I want to see more. So.... if you want to continue with the story of how we got to this movie... the prequel is worth it. But 100% watch the documentary/behind the scenes of this movie and how all the special effects were done. It is not only mind-blowing but the dedication is astounding and it shows.

Oh boy. When voting I forgot about the dog kennel scene 😬 Glad you enjoyed it anyway. Probably favorite horror. And yea, MacReady's hat is something else 🤠

Best reaction, ever.

In the end, there can only be one of four answers. Place your bets... A) They're both The Thing B) Neither is The Thing C) Only Childs is The Thing D) Only McReady is The Thing According to John Carpenter, everything needed to solve this riddle is in the film. He also said that he knows the answer but told no one on set, and he's taking the answer to his grave. On more than one occasion, I've gone frame by frame to "follow the thing." This is a brilliant piece of filmmaking.

I feel like any of them are possible, to be honest. It seems like regardless of which it is, they're both gonna die anyway. 😅

I'd be interested in the prequel! Definitely going to check out the documentary.

Literally my favorite horror movie of all time. The idea that you don't know if your friend or even if you yourself is the Thing... chills

Thank you SO much for Googling Jed. It never occurred to me the wolf from Natty Gann would be in other movies. That warms my heart.💜 LOVED this reaction. When the blood jumped, boy did that catch you off guard. Perfect timing as you were questioning the validity of the test, which is exactly what the director was going for. This is such a product of its time. The practical effects, the score, the actors. I feel like the movie is firing on all cylinders. Thanks for sharing your reaction. I’m definitely looking forward to more effects driven films from this decade.

Best boy Jed! 🥰 Glad you enjoyed the reaction, thank you for watching!

Masterpiece. The fact that you get practical effects that not only hold up, but look better than a lot of movies today. Special nod to Ennio Moricone’s simple but effective score. This is the first movie I saw that made me aware of Kurt Russel and he remains a favorite. Excellent reaction!

There was a fairly convincing and mildly internet famous video essay somewhere making a case that Childs was The Thing.

FYI, while the YouTube video is titled "John Carpenter's The Thing Documentary," the documentary is a great piece that has been included on every home video release since Laserdisc, and it is actually called The Thing: Terror Takes Shape. That said, it is definitely the documentary I would recommend. Another extra that has been included on all the home video releases since Laserdisc is an audio commentary by John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, which is generally cited among the most entertaining commentary tracks of all time just because Carpenter and Russell have such a great rapport together. In general, I would recommend John Carpenter tracks as being commentaries worth listening to, along with Kevin Smith tracks and Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright tracks.

OG Among Us! Absolute masterpiece and definitely in my Top 10 Horror Movies of all time. It's simple, it's effective, it's timeless.

Great reaction, good time indeed. I hadn’t seen this movie in ages so nice refresher. I also like the 2011 remake but I’m in the minority on that one. Looking forward to seeing the YouTube edit.

I won't explain why, because I don't want to set expectations, but let's just say that The Thing (2011) has got to be a really key exhibit in the discussion of CGI vs. practical, and for more than one reason than you might immediately think. Also, while they are *very* different, the same short story was adapted into a previous movie, The Thing From Another World (1951). It would probably be better to wait awhile, so that you can get some distance from this and not compare, because their entire approach is unrelated to one another, but that is a very fun classic sci-fi movie. When the kid Laurie is babysitting is watching TV in Halloween, you can see The Thing From Another World playing on screen. Carpenter grew up loving the movie and short story, and that led to him not only making this but paying tribute to those specific parts through visual homage.

I'm really glad you enjoyed this because when it came up on the poll it was my favourite of the choices, but I just wasn't sure I could - in good conscience - vote for you to watch this. I really enjoyed you digging into Jed's filmography! I haven't seen Natty Gann since I saw it in theatres as a boy, but I still remember how charming he was in that movie and had no idea it was the same dog.
