Hi everyone! I forgot to mention yesterday that I will still put out some polls here and there for the series dedicated movie reaction slot. I figured I would share the first one now so that it will be done by the time I am planning out December a bit more thoroughly.

This poll is made up of the next movie in four series that I haven't continued. The previous movie in each of these series was watched quite a while ago now.

Aliens - watched March 2023

Die Hard with a Vengeance - watched March 2024

The Matrix Revolutions - watched August 2024

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - watched May 2023

This poll will close on Saturday evening. Remember, you're just voting for what you want first - it doesn't mean the three losers will be removed from my watchlist entirely.

PS. The Band of Brothers 7-8 reaction will be shared late tonight and then the V for Vendetta reaction will be out around mid-day Monday, right before the next schedule is shared.

I like all of these movies, but Alien³ is my favorite of the bunch. However, one thing that is worth noting is that its reptation among the fans improved greatly with the 2004 Special Edition (also sometimes referred to as the Workprint or Assembly Cut). In 1991, during the production of the movie, director David Fincher (making his transition from music videos and commercials to feature filmmaking) was constantly being micromanaged by 20th Century Fox. At the time, the thought was still that movie series traditionally ended with three movies, and so there was a bigger spotlight on Alien³ than there might have been had they known the would go onto make a fourth film, two AvP movies, two prequels, a fifth film, and a TV show. After the turbulent and frustrating production ended, Fincher turned in his first cut to the studio, and they came back with extensive changes and notes they wanted him to implement. Instead of doing so, Fincher chose to quit, and the movie was drastically recut and some minor changes were made in reshoots. For the 2004 DVD, the producer of the special edition content, Charles de Lauzirika, inquired whether Fincher would be interested in doing a director's cut. Fincher said the experience was too tainted and declined, so instead, they went back to that last cut he submitted to the studio and that is the Special Edition version. In 2011, when the Special Edition was upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray, they even brought in two of the cast members to rerecord a few lines of dialogue that would have been ADRed in post-production had the scene remained in the finished film. I understand the desire, perhaps, to watch the version that people experienced in 1992, but I do think it's worth knowing that much of the affection for this movie is potentially based off of this alternate version. Also, as far as availability goes, the Special Edition is one of the more accessible alternate cuts on digital services, as well as the discs.

Also, Live Free or Die Hard takes place on the 4th of July, so if you end up feeling like its performance here means you should just slot it in somewhere...

I had to vote for Die Hard cause the fourth is my favorite of the franchise. But I would love to see you watch all these movies (except aliens just cause I couldn’t get into that series. Not for me is all)

Whatever version of Alien³ you decide to watch, I'll be happy either way. I love all four of the original Alien films and always get amped when someone continues past Aliens. Alien³ is also the only other movie of the series I quote just as much as Aliens. So many good lines.

I noticed that it wasn't available, but my move with these is usually just to get a disc off eBay - I've done this for a number of movies in the past now. That said, I usually don't purchase discs ahead of time. Only shortly before I know that I will watch it. I appreciate your offer, thank you. As the cost of movies are direct business expenses that I can use to reduce my taxable income when I'm filing my taxes, I prefer not to receive movies as gifts from viewers.

Thanks for the info about Aliens 3, and as for LFODH... not a bad idea!

IMHO you've already watched the best each series has to offer, and you've left off at the appropriate movie to provide a solid head canon for a satisfying conclusion (e.g. Terminator 2 ends with a solid prolog that doesn't need a follow-up) I've probably suggested it a bunch through all the appropriate channels, but I'd love your take on GATTACA

Your opinion is shared by many. There are also lots of people who suggested that I should watch the movies anyway to form my own opinions instead of disregarding them entirely. Edit: Gattaca has been recommended and I may have even put it on a poll once? (Or I might be thinking of someone else's poll.) Definitely something to get to one day.

Personally, I think all four of these movies are great, but I get especially irked by the idea of leaving out The Matrix Resurrections. Whether audiences wanted to hear what Resurrections had to say, I think it was a pretty essential addition in terms of what the Wachowskis (more Lana than Lilly, given Lilly stepped away) were trying to say. My only observation is that they probably would've said it earlier within the original trilogy if they had made the franchise at a later time.

Chris Thom

Resurrections has grown on me a bit. But it's not as good as the original trilogy for sure. Quite meta and clever, though. Great to see some of the band back together.

This is like a rogues gallery of sequels (: and I could quite happily watch any of them. My favorite is Alien 3—which, I just checked, has the lowest RT score out of all of them by quite an impressive margin :D

Chris Thom

After all the iconic music videos he shot, Alien 3 was a bit of an odd choice from the get to start his film career with. But he's a fantastic director, and there's some really striking visuals in it. I don't think I've seen the director's cut yet, but I want to.

Noooo not Alien losing to hecking Die Hard :(
