NGL, this makes me want to watch Buckaroo Banzai again to see if I change my mind about it. 😅 What a bonkers of a movie, but absolutely loved Kurt's energy here and James Hong is fantastic, as always. Thank you mgUltra for submitting this for MotM!

Enjoy the reaction and looking forward to your comments!

Won't be able to watch this until later, but I hope you enjoyed it (wouldn't be surprised if you didn't, though). This is one of my favorite movies, and it's absolute cheesy garbage--but in the best possible way. My friends and I quote this movie to each other all the time, especially the "I feel pretty good" bit after they drink the potion. Looooooooooooooooove this movie.

Just finished my first watch and loved it! The only thing I knew about this movie was its ridiculousness. The thing I was not prepared for (but fully embraced) was just *how* ridiculous. The answer was very. Very ridiculous. One thing I could not get out of my head was how much it reminded me of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Make Indy a mullet-towing trucker who honestly, couldn't give a shit about *any* history, let alone Chinese history, with Wang as an older Short Round, toss in a couple Raiden's from Mortal Kombat, and that was Big Trouble. I think bonkers is literally the only way to describe this movie. No other adjective will do, it is 1000% accurate. I will say, as someone who has seen most of JC's films, it's pretty low for me on the Carpenter scale, but it is very high on the Kurt scale, so it evens itself out. Definitely something I'd rewatch again. Oh, and that was totally me that mentioned this was another Carpenter/Russell collab in your roster. You're welcome 😉 Great reaction KL! And congrats to the winner on this banger!

Part of the inspiration for Carpenter in making this (and one of the things that helps the movie endure) is that he wanted to subvert the trope of action movies that team up a white guy with a POC, with the white guy portrayed as a badass and the POC portrayed as goofy or even incompetent. He tried to cast Jackie Chan as the sidekick, but Chan turned the movie down, and Carpenter went with Dennis Dun instead. Dun said he was drawn to the role for the same reason that Carpenter wanted to make it: "I'm seeing Chinese actors getting to do stuff that American movies usually don't let them do. I've never seen this type of role for an Asian in an American film." After the script (a revised version of an older script that many people said was unreadable) was delivered, Carpenter also went through it and took out anything that he felt would be too stereotypical or offensive to Asian-American audiences. Speaking of the screenplay, I wonder: did you pick Buckaroo Banzai out of thin air? The writer who did that near-final screenplay was W.D. Richter, who also directed Buckaroo Banzai. The Three Storms are actually the inspiration for Raiden in Mortal Kombat. The lipstick joke wasn't in the script. Russell and Kim Cattrall worked it out after noticing the lipstick rubbed off easily. When they made a Fast & Furious spin-off a couple of years ago, it was revealed after it opened that both of the stars had a clause in their contract that they could never lose a fight on screen, because it was bad for their image. Carpenter liked Russell for the exact opposite reason: he had no problem being the butt of the joke. The actor you recognized among the villainous gang was Al Leong. Notable roles that you've seen: a henchman in the original Die Hard (who memorably sneaks a Crunch bar out of the snack shop while waiting to shoot at the police), the guy in charge of electrically torturing Mel Gibson's Riggs in the first Lethal Weapon, and as Genghis Khan in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Like many of Carpenter's great movies, this was a bomb at the time but ultimately became a cult favorite on home video. Still great fun. My next Reactr request might be another Carpenter movie...

I remember Buckaroo Banzai being silly like this and I didn't enjoy it as much as this one, but that was a while ago now so that's why I said maybe I should revisit it. Thanks for all the other info!

Ahh it was you! Excellent. Haven't seen any Indy movies yet, but I really want to in 2026.

😶 Dang, my apologies. I should have thought of that before making the reference, my bad.

Wow, I had it backwards, I thought Carpenter was inspired by Raiden. That's pretty dope!
