Welcome to DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters 4:16 incoming cuteness!!! Leave it to James Gunn to bring CG animated animals to the big screen. He based Krypto’s good bad dog demeanor off of his own dog. 4:54 Yes he is. I can hear C-3PO in his voice. 6:19 Nicolas Hoult was great as Hank McCoy/Beast, but now we get to see him as Lex Luthor. 14:11 Yup, and he portrays Guy Gardner. We didn’t get a Green Lantern movie in the DCEU for obvious reasons, but we are getting an HBO series called Lanterns which will star TWO Green Lanterns. Nathan won’t be one of them, but he is expected to reprise his role in the show. (It’s worth noting they filmed Lanterns here in Los Angeles which made it easy for Nathan to continue working on The Rookie in which he is the star. Season 8 premieres next month after the holidays.) 14:44 Isabella Merced went from fighting infected as Dina in The Last of Us to taking to the skies as Kendra Saunders/Hawk Girl. 14:15 Edi Gathegi previously portrayed Darwin in X-Men: First Class. He expressed in an interview that his favorite thing about his character Mister Terrific is his intellect which is also something to be celebrated. He brought up how one can make a difference with their intelligence and his role may potentially inspire more kids to engage in the STEM field. Edi confirmed that he signed for a multi-picture deal with DC Studios. This means we can expect more of Mister Terrific in the future. 18:05 Yes he does. I know you wanna move away from superhero content, but John Cena has done a great job as Peacemaker. If you wanna get to know him better, you gotta check out James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. Gunn worked on it during the DCEU days, but little did we know back then that it was gonna be the launchpad for the new DCU. There’s a bit of a watchorder though: • Suicide Squad 2020 • Peacemaker season 1 • Creature Commandos (adult animated series; season 2 is in production) • Peacemaker season 2 • Lanterns (coming soon) … and other stuff that we can’t talk about just yet. And I would also recommend checking out Blue Beetle 2023 along the way. He’s gonna have his own animated spinoff series that takes place after the movie and will be part of the DCU.

If you want an easy (and very good) place to jump in on reading Superman comics, you could start with 2005's "All-Star Superman" by Grant Morrison. It's a short (12 issue), self-contained, mini-series in a pocket universe, so doesn't have anything to do with the mainstream DC universe, so you only have to know the broad strokes of the lore. It's sold as a collected volume (Trade Paperback or TPB in comic geek parlance) in both physical and digital forms, so is straightforward to find and collect. While plots of the movie and comic are very different, it was one of the inspirations for the movie tonally and structurally.

Glad I paused to read the rage monkeys' work 😅

James Gunn raised the thought a little bit ago that there are 3 origin stories we never need to see again as most people know them (or will look them up if needed. 1) Superman arriving on earth. 2) Batman's parents being killed. 3) Spiderman being bitten by a radioactive spider. Honestly I have to agree with him. Spiderman Homecoming did it neatly in a short conversation and this movie handled it via a set of bullet points. They're stories that most people seeing comic book movies have seen more than enough times and covering them fully just wastes time. I recently saw a behind the scenes "on set" clip of David and James "discussing" the "I'm Human" speech which led to the version we got which summed up to me why Superman is such a great hero. One of my favourite little behind the scenes bit is the "So is Gary" bit at the end. Alan improved that on the set and in the clip you can hear James Gunn crack up as it came from nowhere.

I liked it. I liked Corenswet as Superman. Full of heart. I especially liked Rachel Brosnahan as Lois. (Though I also have a soft spot for Amy Adams.) Nicholas Hoult was convincing as Lex Luthor. Good actor. Nathan Fillion (of Firefly fame) was interesting as pompous Guy Gardner. Good seeing the cute Isabela Merced from Last of Us -- here Hawkgirl? That was cool getting tease of Supergirl at the end. I am definitely no expert on Superman or any superhero. Below are the 6 Superman movies I fully watched in my life (all in the last 2 years) -- ranked by how entertaining I found them. 1. Superman (1978). 7/10 *2. Superman (2025). 7/10 3. Superman Returns. 6/10 4. Man of Steel. 6/10 5. Superman 2 (1980). 4/10 6. BvS (2016) (Ultimate Edition). 3/10
