What a fantastic season. So much creativity and fun writing and great character development. I think I enjoy the first half of the season more than the latter half, though. But this finale was still fab.

I did become more sad about the direction of a certain character after I recorded this review and had thought about it some more. 🥹 Season 6 is gonna be interesting.

Looking forward to your comments! Feel free to chime in below about my considerations that I mention in the review. Thanks so much for joining me this season!

There will be no Marvel episode reactions next week. I will get into.. whatever I get into next.. during the first week of January.

THIS finale! Fuck yes. I mean...fuck no! Coulson! Fitz! And yet it's just so gooooooood. The moment in the midst of Daisy's fight with Talbot where she finds the centipede cure in her gauntlet, and Gemma realizes she doesn't have it...holy crap, the hairs on my neck are just standing on end thinking about it. I love this show. Good shit.

Had a blast watchign this season with you. My vote for the watch order is split it up. For me, the mixing of shows has kept it fresh. Keep up the great work. Also, I think they blamed Quake in the original timeline because Talbot said he was going to absorb her and use her power to find the Gravatonium. He uses the power, breaks the earth, people recognize the power and assume it was her.

My love for Season 5 grows with every re-watch, and yes the first half is more enjoyable that the second half...if only because it's hard to see our team in-fighting. Some fun facts, the photograph that Jemma packs is the same selfie that she takes back in the 2nd episode of season 1! Also, the very first shot of this season showed exactly how the season would end! If you go back and watch, the season starts with a shot of Enoch's fridge showing one of Robin's drawings...namely 2 stick figures standing on a beach between 2 palm trees. So, in effect, the show spoiled the season ending!

So, as has been mentioned by others IIRC, the showrunners didn't know if there would be a season six when wrting this finale, so it was written to act as a suitable series finale as well as a season finale. I think they pulled it off really well - the major plot lines are sufficiently closed off, and we get some closure for our characters and their arcs. The biggest open plots are the status of Deke, and finding Fitz out in space. Assuming the show had ended here, for the former, I'd argue it doesn't really matter whether Deke left or blinked out of existence - either way, he's no longer here, and the audience is free to chose whatever ending they prefer/feels makes more sense - and for the latter, we've already set up that the team will be looking for Fitz, so we can assume they will be successful eventually, and therefore we don't really need to see it. As I think had also been mentioned, by this point Mavel Studios weren't talking to Marvel Television, so there was no possibilty for the showrunners to incorporate anything from Infinity War/Endgame - beyond the involvement of Thanos, they didn't know anything that was going to happen. Some people watching when the show aired assumed that we'd see the snap at the end, but even if the showrunners had known that was going to happen, there's no benefit to including it when the show hadn't been renewed, so I'm fine with no reference (TBH, I'm still more annoyed that there was no reference to AoS in Inifinity War - just an indirect mention of what happened with Daisy/Tabolt in Chicage from Hill/Fury in the end credits scene would have been enough). In case you were wondering how Daisy survived being forced into the ground from that height by Talbot - she let off a quake blast just before hitting the ground to help cushion the impact (this can be seen in the VFX), and the shock from that quake is what cauased the debris collapse that buried/killed Fitz. This was confimed by Mark Kolpak in pre-visualisation storyboard sketches of the sequence that he posted on Twitter around the time the epsiode aired. Fitz's death is superbly done, and also I really like the way they 'fake it out' - it did happen, making it still matter, but becuase there's another Fitz we can still have him around (this sort of thing is something that Mutant Enemy has pulled before, but they do it so well that it still catches you out when you see it). For me, I find it a more emotional scene than Peter being snapped away in Tony's arms in Endgame - not only are we more atached to these characters with the greater time investment, but this feels more final in the moment (frankly, I found many of the 'deaths' in Inifinity War to lack impact because of who they decided to 'snap' away - e.g. Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man were definetly going to get s,equels regardless of whether thay had been annouced or not, so it was obvious that those 'deaths' would be undone). In terms of the watch order, I don't mind switching to Jessica Jones - my only concern is that due to the number of seasons of the Defenders-verse that are left plus the other shows (assuming you are still going to do them), following the order as is will mean it'll be 2027 before S6 makes an appearance (I believe that's correct - it was quite a while ago that I worked that out)

Sean Ellingham

Yeah, you're correct - in the previous 'looped' timeline, Talbot absorbed Daisy and *he* cracked the Earth apart using her powers. Those in the future assumed it was Daisy due to that recovered footage of her leaving the quinjet - there were no survivors or witnesses from the city to say otherwise.

Josh Yee

Great! I'm glad I got that right. It usually takes me a couple of watches to fully pick up everything in shows.

I love the climax of this finale. Talbot was the one who destroyed the world with Daisy’s Power. Everyone just thought it was here because no one had any records of what happened after Daisy left the Jet. And Coulson took the cure, Daisy wouldn’t be able to fight off Talbot and he would’ve absorbed her and destroyed the earth. It really is a finale that comes for circle, Coulson putting the pieces together finding a third option and Robin’s chilling line of “Something’s different”, it really is a great finale, but I’m glad we got two more seasons.

You asked about why Quake was blamed. As others have said her powers plus the fact she was seen at the location would make her the prime suspect but you also asked why Kasius family believes it was her. Daisy herself is the reason by calling herself destroyer of worlds then escaping. If you call yourself destroyer of worlds then escape a prison then Father Kasius hears that the Confederacy ship and earth were destroyed you would become the number one suspect. Daisy named herself. Now this is irrelevant but the scene with the characters all in black talking about people they have lost can also serve as a way to address the snap without actually showing it onscreen. They lost people and that is part of the job but they all know it could have been worse. The show will never focus on the snap really because story wise they lost a whole planet already so it would be sort of redundant.

I'd say almost half of the fandom was also confused about the Fitz reference. Maybe 1/3. The other half knew what they meant about finding Fitz. 😁

If Deke survives, it is like what he said, that he believed he wouldn't blink out of existence, but would be from a different timeline. He described it as jumping to this new timeline. Hence, the mutliversal theory would be confirmed.

Thadman

There was a picture that Robin drew that was a person and had a lot of little stick figures inside and there was silver around (gravitonium). I didn't get that at first but she was seeing Talbot with a lot of people bouncing around him, so although he kept saying he was fine and in control, it was obvious all those personalities was jumbling his reasoning. I remember seeing the picture and had no idea what it was, even on the 2nd viewing. I was like, "What's THAT about?"🤣

Thadman

Oh, if I get a vote, I agree that breaking it up with Jessica Jones keeps things fresh. I love 'em both so can go with either, but I'm cool waiting for S6 if you wanna do JJ first.

The issue is it's not just JJ next, but like a ton of other shows before AOS S6. But I suppose I could put S6 and S7 anywhere.

I forgot to mention these parallels. In the pilot we saved a good man who was a threat and becoming unstable. Here we had to kill the man who was a good man but was a threat and becoming unstable. Daisy first mission involved Ian Quinn and Franklin trying to use gravitonium and they didn't care about innocent people dying for their goals. This mission was Talbot trying to use gravitonium and he also didn't care most likely due to their influence in his head. Quinn shot Daisy in season one. Here she gets to finally get payback by shooting his consciousness into space.
