This was the winner of Chad's Member of the Month poll that he created for winning the draw! It was lovely to see another young Jake Gyllenhaal movie. He was so talented so young. This was a cute feel-good movie. Definitely need to go read about the actual guys now. 😊 Thanks so much for watching!

October Sky (1999) | Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Not at home so I can't watch this yet, but this is based on a memoir by Hickam, originally called Rocket Boys (renamed after the film, although, fun fact, October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys). He wrote two follow-ups that I only learned about a couple of years ago after Cassie reacted to the film. The first time I saw the movie, I thought it was great. Then I read the book, and watching it a second time, I wasn't a fan of the film, because it had to simplify and streamline so much. Finally, I read the book again, and that was the point at which I watched Cassie's reaction, and I made peace with the differences between the two. Still, if you want more detail, and a different experience, I highly recommend the book. Perhaps this will be my cue to read it again, and then read its two follow-ups, as well as the short side book he wrote about having his book adapted into a movie.

Great reaction. Liked your outro. Enjoyed the rewatch - one of my favorite movies. Good story (inspirational, the community support, etc.). Damn good acting. Sad that Miss Riley and Bykovsky died. It is a good movie to rewatch. As a young adult in 1990, I developed a crush on Lauren Dern watching her in the David Lynch movie “Wild at Heart” (1990) (romance/crime) = this short clip is Nicolas Cage singing to her in the movie a song made famous by Elvis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TICv5UG0hA&t=1s

I think I've seen this movie more times at school than I ever did at home. 😆 This was fun to revisit. I remember making model rockets for science classes and I think maybe a kit from either The Discovery Channel Store or a mail-in science catalogue where I also got a kit to build a robotic arm. Man, that stuff was so cool.

Thanks Clay! Definitely one of those rewatchable movies, for sure.

I guess I just wasn't in the class that showed this one. 😅

Incoming paragraph It's such a feel good story. I'm not surprised that Miss Riley's part was the most emotional for you. When she's talking with the principal about false hopes, it really hits home that for her (whether right or wrong), she tends to measure her success on the future of her students, and sees the future of her students shoveling coal as maybe a waste of her time as an educator. Chris Cooper was great as Homer's dad. He has two of my favorite moments. One is after his wife says she'll leave him if he doesn't fall in line. That smirk he has after she had the guts to call him out. The other is after Homer says basically that he is his hero. There's just a hint there in his eyes that it hit his emotions, and he sees (maybe for the first time) that every one else is celebrating Homer's gold medal except the dad. I think the whole cast really shine in their roles and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I actually didn't vote at all. I wanted to be surprised at the result of the poll. Thanks fellow Patreons for selecting this great film.
