Appearance

Selene is the kind of beautiful that feels dangerous first and pretty second. She has long, inky-black hair that falls in loose waves to the middle of her back, often tied into a low ponytail or braid to keep it out of her way when she’s working. She has a bombastic figure with sensual curves and big breasts. Her skin is pale with a faint cool undertone that gives away what she is even when she’s trying to pass as human. Her eyes are a deep garnet red, dark enough to look brown from a distance but catching light like bloodstones up close. When her hunger stirs or she’s about to fight, her pupils narrow and that red brightens into a predatory glow. Her features are sharp with high cheekbones, well-defined nose, and full lips that default to a flat, unimpressed line or a faint smirk. Selene dresses in a red and black flamenco dress that shows her full figure with volantes, tiered skirts, and often dramatic sleeves. Around her neck she wears a thin, silver chain holding a small, tarnished coin from her homeland, a relic of the life she lost. She uses a huge umbrella whenever the sun is out.

—----------------------

Personality

Selene is blunt, dry, and not easily impressed. She has the air of someone who has buried too many people to waste time on politeness for its own sake. Her humor is dark and often delivered deadpan, the kind of quiet one-liner that makes others laugh a moment later when it finally clicks. On the surface, she comes off as cool, distant, and a little intimidating. She rarely raises her voice; she doesn’t need to. A look from her is often enough to make rowdy werewolves or drunken fae calm down. Town drunks and visiting idiots talk big—once. After that, they learn she’s not bluffing. But under that flinty exterior is someone who cares fiercely and deeply about the people she’s chosen as “hers.” She patrols the outskirts of Moonshadow Gulch not just because she’s strong, but because she refuses to see the town become another burned ruin like the places she fled in Europe. Selene has a soft spot for the vulnerable: children, the newly-turned, scared migrants who don’t know where else to go. She pretends she’s just “keeping them from becoming liabilities,” but everyone can see she stays up late making sure they’re safe. She is openly hostile to anyone waving holy symbols around like weapons, and has little patience for sermons. That makes Asia’s presence in the Gulch… complicated. The girl carries faith like a lantern she refuses to set down and somehow, Selene hasn’t walked away from that light. If anything, she quietly orbits it.

Background

Selene Dragulescu was born human in a small Carpathian village, the kind where winters were long, wolves cried at night, and old superstitions never really died. The vampires there were a secret nobility in the shadows, predators who ruled from ruined manors and mountain caves. She became one of them not by choice but by circumstance. A hunting party gone wrong, a beast in the forest that was more than a wolf, a desperate bargain to save someone else at the cost of her own humanity—details she doesn’t talk about if she can help it.

For decades she lived as part of a small coven and fed on a strict code. Feed only from those who would not be missed or from willing donors. Protect the village from worse monsters than them. Hide from priests, hunters, and rival covens who would wipe them out. But soon The world changed. Railroads, guns, organized hunter orders sponsored by both Church and crown. The old balance shattered. Her coven was branded “abominations” and “devil-spawn.” Hunters with blessed bullets and holy seals descended. Selene watched friends and elders burn or vanish into ashes on the wind. The survivors scattered across Europe, no longer hunting beasts but now being hunted themselves. When word of a distant land reached them, a place across the ocean where the supernatural slipped through cracks in the new continent’s chaos—Selene took it. She and a handful of other vampires crossed by ship, hiding in cargo holds, feeding on rats and the occasional opportunistic predator. North America was no paradise. Human hunters existed here too, and new supernatural communities were territorial. Many doors closed in their faces. In some towns, vampires were chased off or shot on sight.

Then they found Moonshadow Gulch. It was a rough, half-wild settlement hidden from mundane eyes, a place where sasquatches, witches, Weres, and exiles from a dozen worlds huddled together to survive. The locals were wary when they learned what Selene and her people were. But the Gulch was founded by those who’d also been hunted and displaced. In the end, they opened their gates, on the condition that the vampires lived by the same rules as everyone else: no predation on residents, no turning without consent, and when the Gulch was attacked, they would stand and fight with the town.

Selene agreed. She became one of the Gulch’s night protectors, stalking the borders under the moon with rifle and fangs, hunting hunters. When someone came looking to burn out “the leeches,” they found a town that bled together instead.

By the time Asia wandered into their world of plank walkways, flickering lanterns, and hidden wards, Selene was already a guardian to the town, the vampire who kept the night from swallowing the town whole.

Abilities

Vampiric Physiology - Selene possesses the standard arsenal of a vampire, sharpened by decades of survival:

Superhuman Strength & Speed: She can move faster than most eyes can track and tear through wood, bone, or metal when she has to.

Enhanced Senses: She can smell blood at incredible distances, hear heartbeats through walls, and see clearly in total darkness.

Regeneration: Bullet wounds, broken bones, and deep cuts heal rapidly as long as she has blood reserves. Serious injuries slow her, but it takes a lot to keep her down for long.

Tracker and Gunslinger - Selene has adapted her old-world hunting instincts to a new frontier:

Expert marksmanship, especially at night; she can snipe from rooftops or ridgelines with terrifying precision.

Skilled at reading tracks, scents, and subtle environmental shifts, she can follow a trail through forest, desert, or city alike.

Comfortable fighting with both firearms and close-quarters claws and fangs, switching fluently depending on the threat.

Powers

Shadow Step - In darkness or deep shadow, Selene can blur and “step” short distances—slipping from one patch of darkness to another in the blink of an eye. It isn’t true teleportation, but to someone watching, it might as well be.

Gaze of the Blood Moon - If Selene locks eyes with a target and focuses, she can paralyze weaker-willed enemies with fear. Cloud memories around brief encounters. Nudge emotions like panic, hesitation, or calm. She rarely uses this on allies, and never on the Gulch’s children. For her, it’s a weapon of last resort or a tool to make hunters forget exactly where the town is.

Bound to the Gulch (Moonshadow Pact) - The land itself remembers the blood spilled to defend it. After years of fighting for Moonshadow Gulch, Selene has become attuned to its “mood”. She gets uneasy tingles when hostile forces approach the town. Her powers are slightly stronger within its borders at night, as if the shadows themselves recognize her. Conversely, betraying the Gulch (which she never intends to do) would weaken her and strip her of that bond.

—------------------------

Personality Quirks

Has a habit of sitting on rooftops or on the saloon’s balcony rails, legs dangling, watching the stars.

Drinks blood from dark glass bottles or metal flasks so the kids in town don’t have to see it; she jokes it’s “tomato juice” if they ask.

Fiddles with her old Carpathian coin when she’s thinking, thumb rubbing the worn engraving.

Sleeps in a reinforced, windowless room during the day, but always leaves one gun within arm’s reach. Old habits die hard.

Likes bad coffee. Really bad coffee. Claims she can’t taste much of it anyway but finds the warmth comforting.

Calls almost everyone by nicknames instead of their actual names, especially the younger refugees.

Relationships

Asia Argento - When Asia first arrived, Selene smelled Church all over her. That alone made Selene wary. But then she watched the girl work. Asia healed without asking for payment, pushing herself to exhaustion to mend wounds that had festered for years. She apologized for not doing more even when she had already done the impossible. Selene recognized something painfully familiar: someone who had been used, thrown away, and still chose to be kind. Now she keeps a quiet watch over Asia. She pretends it’s just because “a living saint in a place like this is a magnet for trouble,” but everyone can see she softens around the girl. If Asia is working late in the infirmary, Selene is usually nearby—leaning against a wall, cleaning her gun, eyes half-lidded but listening to every footstep outside. If anyone tried to drag Asia back to the people who excommunicated her, they’d find out exactly how fast a vampire can move when she’s defending someone she’s claimed as family.

The Vampire Community of Moonshadow Gulch - Selene is both elder, enforcer, and reluctant big sister to the small group of European vampires who settled here. She lays down rules ruthlessly, no feeding on townsfolk, no turning without consent, no bringing old feuds onto Gulch soil—but she is also the first to stand between them and danger. They, in turn, trust her judgment and follow her lead. To them, she’s the reason they have a place to sleep without waking up to fire and stakes.

The Wild Ones / Town of Moonshadow Gulch - She was an outsider once. Now, she’s one of the pillars of the night. Selene patrols with sasquatches, shares whiskey with witches, and grumbles at werewolves who can’t hold their liquor. She argues with the town’s day-watch leader over tactics and territory but will be the first one on the line when something threatens their ramshackle peace. To most residents, she’s a reassuring constant: if you see Selene on the rooftops at night, rifle on her back, it means you will be safe.

—------------------------

Trivia

She refuses to turn anyone who romanticizes vampirism. Anyone who asks is put on watch as “too stupid to live unsupervised.”

Has a soft spot for old folk songs from her homeland. Sometimes hums them quietly while cleaning weapons or keeping watch.

Keeps a written list (hidden) of everyone in the Gulch she’d personally evacuate first if the town ever had to fall.

Can’t stand trains. Too many memories of fleeing from one border to the next while hunted. Prefers horses and her own two feet.

Despite her dislike of religion, she finds herself weirdly soothed by Asia’s voice when the girl prays—enough that she sometimes “patrols” just outside earshot of the infirmary during evening prayers.

Has never fully told anyone the story of how she was turned. The closest she’s come is, “I made a choice. It wasn’t a good one, but it was the only one that left anyone alive.”

Quotes

“Moonshadow Gulch took us in when the rest of the world pointed guns. I don’t forget debts like that.”

“Little Saint, if you pass out on your feet again, I’m chaining you to that cot. Heal in shifts. God or whoever’s left up there can wait five minutes.”

“I’m not a hero. I just kill the things that want to turn this place into another graveyard. If that makes people sleep better at night, they’re welcome.”
