Re: the polling thing, have you considered approval voting? Basically this is where people have the chance to vote for as many options as they’re interested in, and then you just pick the option that gets the most votes, even if it’s not a majority. Idk if this is a possibility in Patreon but it might be a possible solution.

Maybe the vote cutoff should just be 11:59 p.m on the last day of the month, that way new people signing up to the voting level after the first cant come in and change the results. Thats what seems to have happened this month. It keeps it so you get 1 ramble poll vote per month subscribed, instead of coming in at the start of a new month, voting in the previous month’s poll, and voting in the next months poll on just 1 month pledged at the $5 level.

I can’t believe there’s people who “game” the ramble poll… do they have nothing better to do? I’m happy with whatever change you choose to implement (or not). Personally, I have changed my votes around occasionally to favour one of the frontrunners before so I do appreciate that. Since every topic is user submitted I assume that whatever becomes a video will make someone happy and can be interesting in surprising ways!

It might not be a good one, but my suggestion would be for you to choose whatever suit you better among the top topics when you feel like there are such shenanigans. For example, it could be less research time on your end, personal interests in the subject, funny potential or whatever you like the most when doing your rambles. If you set clear conditions it might deter people from wasting their vote.

Man the absolute vindication i feel from someone, anyone else summing up Logan Paul's content as just annoying people and animals is unreal. I feel like people are always trying to do gymnastics to defend his content out of some misplaced sense of fairness when like guys, he just makes nothing content. Even if I was a kid I would get second hand embarrassment from his videos. I dunno I just feel like there's more substance to cocomelon for kids than a Logan Paul video. If I wanted to hear some random white guy talk about how cool he is and watch him annoy people I'd hang out all day at Walmart.

I agree with having some kind of check on the gaming-the-poll nonsense; I guess people find it funny but it can get kind of disrespectful to most people's desire to just pick a fun video topic (and, I assume, Jenny's ability to get them done!). I'd be in favor of a cutoff, maybe five days after the poll is put up? If people care, that's plenty of time to pick one, and if they're chill with whatever wins, it won't matter if they're busy and miss the vote sometimes.

I'm up at the Colleen Ballinger apology and Nicholson is talking about her make up and I'm waiting to see if she realises it's a filter (I've seen claims that Ballinger said she didnt notice it was on while Gabi Belle said she has used the same filter in post production editing for clients) because there is something weirdly poetic about facing her accusers with a face that's digitally manipulated. Like, it's a small quibble but when should face smoothing/auto make up filters be used in apology videos, if it wasn't for the uke which was bloody distracting, would it not just have added more fuel to the "she's hiding in plain sight" "her audience doesn't see her true face" type criticism of her behaving inappropriately with children/under age fans. It was such a weird choice to have one and to have a filter that falls square in the uncanny valley. Ugh, I shouldn't get ahead of myself but fingers crossed.

I love that both the ukulele one and the poetry one had to make a serious apology video admitting to much worse things than the initial video was about. Seemingly, the huge backlash to their meme apology videos got a lot more eyes on them, which found lots more racism and plagiarism in their respective histories.

Regarding the poll shenanigans, I always assume my votes are non-binding. We don't control you; we're more a sort of Ramble advisory board. Still, your track record shows that you try to oblige us in good faith. I think it's fair for you to include evidence of weird voting patterns before choosing a winner. As for "low-cost" solutions, I think the only ones that scale are to disable vote changing or limit us to one vote. I understand why you don't like those options. Hopefully, Patreon will make a true "ranked choice" polling mode in the future!

About time I've been watching jenny be terrible at video games just to get by. JK it is weird experiencing it in a disjointed timeline. I have not sought out any friendship is magic yet but millennial falcon was just amazing. I'm not aware of how these things, different projects, started or ended but it's a shame COVID derailed society right when so many things were happening. Oooh jenny checkout Hellen Keller's poetry, it is mind blowing! I'm not even a poetry guy, it's just moving and beautiful and then you remember she can't see or hear. I was delighted when I saw the note that Jenny also got the Bonne Maman jam advent calendar. I've gotten it the last two years and I love it. The flavors are unique and there wasn't a ton of overlap between the two years. There were maybe 5 or 6 flavors out of 24 that were repeated. The flavors are unique ones too, like cherry-hibiscus or orange-guava-lime. It's a little pricey at 50 dollars retail but sometimes Costco carries them for like 35ish. Anyway, I highly recommend! They're great quality jams and always yummy even when the flavor combos seem odd.

Part of the issue with Zoella’s advent calendar was that she was operating a lifestyle brand where she sold perfume, candles, bath products, etc. and almost none of that was in the box. I think it only had one candle from her collection and the rest was random stuff. The one thing that got people really mad was a little bag of confetti 💀

For three winters in a row I broke out in hives mysteriously like every day and I deduced that it was probably from being slightly overheated in the house when the heater went on! It would get worse when I took a hot shower. But then I moved and didn’t get any hives the following winter so it could have been environmental. Extra context for Ellen: I believe in addition to the meanness criticism, there were allegations that some of the show staff had extremely negative experiences with some other staff which were not directly her fault (or even something she knew about) but did happen under her leadership. This makes part of her apology about the failings of that, not just “I’m sorry you experienced something bad” as a vague way to refer to her own meanness.

if the production schedule is stressing you out, maybe it would be better to set patreon to charge when you put out a video rather then at the start of the month. that way if you take a little longer to put a monthly video out, either because it's a pain to edit or you wanted to spend more time on the main channel, there would be no need to feel guilty about it.

RE: Outro 1) About the memberships: Can I make a suggestion about the ramble suggestion tier? I noticed that whenever I have an idea to suggest (and see that I'm doing ok financially), I find myself confused about when is it possible to change the tier for the month to be able to make the suggestion on time (getting the ramble DM). Like if it's the end of the month, then obviously it's far past the deadline- but when it come to early-middle month, that's when things get confusing so I just also wait for the next month for safety. Anyway, I think it'd be really helpful if you'll provide on the suggestion tier a time-frame information on when you can upgrade to that tier so people who want to, won't accidentally upgrade and miss the month. 2) **Please don't feel bad about the delay.** I myself have been dealing with HUGE headaches in the past few days and that made it really difficult for me get my own work done so I get it. 1) "Nickelodeon host voice" is the PERFECT pejorative description for that kind of delivery. 2) I don't really Youtube much (at least not that kind of Youtube vid) so I had heard of absolutely none of these people except Logan Paul and the actual celebrities like Travis Scott and Will Smith, and even for them I'd never seen their apology videos. When you were talking about how the videos can pile up I was thinking maybe they could become bi-monthly? Then you mentioned how some people might only sign up for one month, so maybe that wouldn't work... Though at this point there's such a backlog of Rambles that getting through them all in one month would take some dedication. Maybe I'm just defending a half-baked idea, but it's been on my mind a while now. It might be a weird transition but bi-monthly rambles is still plenty of rambles and I know if I was in your position I'd welcome more time between them.

Ellen's apology annoys me so much; she makes noises as though she's admitting to being mean and mistreating her workers, but what she literally says is more "I get angry, I get frustrated..." etc. Like, yeah, we all feel those emotions. The simply kenna thing was mainly this running theme of hers for posting art that was just traced images of someone else’s work that she’d slightly altered. The main one I remember that triggered the apology was that she created a logo for some shop (makeup I believe) she was running and the logo was made from someone’s art and the artist called her out and everything else unravelled. I've seen a lot of people I support on patreon stressing themselves sick with productivity culture recently and I just want to say if people are unhappy with your amount of work they can just stop supporting, I support you because I want you to be able to produce what you want to when you want to, don't feel obligated to artificially inflate that beyond your capabilities. I'm a disabled writer and I know life gets in the way sometimes. But as other people have said you can give people the option to pay by video I think that's what Jacob Geller does. I was on Twitter and I saw a video of a beloved childhood icon slap a neurodivergent man for making an insensitive joke about a woman's disability, and all the participants were Black, at the Oscars, and my mind unfolded like Harrier Du Bois' mind palace. I could see all the discourse threads branching out, all the tweets scrolling over it like a ticker tape, I could see the Youtube hot take video titles and the rubble of the social justice wasteland, and the word "canceled" blaring over it like an air raid siren, and the sheer exhaustion made me reflect on all my time spent on social media, and I decided, No. No more of this. No more twitter, no more takes, no more callouts, no more digging through fifteen layers of increasingly unhinged Tumblr tea blogs for yellowed receipts, no more. Never again. I'm good on discourse for the rest of my life. The Slap changed my life. So who's to say if it was bad?

If I didn't already know Jenny worked at Disneyland/people facing jobs I would immediately know from watching the beginning of the video aha - I had a client try to gamify/find loopholes with the photocopy machine of my workplace recently and I sounded exactly like this. I loved this ramble because I have no idea who any of these people are which makes it way funnier to me. Sometimes I click on the ones recced to me by the algorithm and now I can't help but think of that scene in the Nicolas Cage Dream Scenario film where he tries to apologize online and even though people are actually attacking him for unfair reasons and he's right to defend himself he comes off as the biggest most insincere jerk possible. Jenny you should look into histamine intolerance!! I started getting allergic reactions out of nowhere around the time I was planning my wedding (very stressful period in my life) and it turns out that I have an issue processing histamines in my body. There are certain foods that can make it worse (avocados are a big one for me, they're super high in histamine). I got psoriasis for the first time allll over my face, digestive issues, stabbing ear pain, and whenever I tried to do any sort of cardio, my tongue and throat would swell up and I'd get pins and needles all over my body. It was really scary and none of the doctors I saw had any idea what was going on until I went to an immunologist and got on an elimination diet. No idea if you could be facing something similar but I thought I'd put it out there in case any of this sounds familiar to you!

Re: the (im)possibility of Logan Paul's redemption arc, he DID actually save big-time pro-wrestler Rey Mysterio Jr from a likely career/life-threatening injury during a match he had with him. I didn't even notice the sacrophagus in the JayStation video until Jenny pointed it out and then I practically choked on my salad. Also! I broke out in hives a while back too! Around late 2022, and it was horrible! I actually went to emergency care late at night because it also made my joints insanely swollen and inflamed until I literally couldn't use my hands or move my fingers, I thought I was coming down with some kind of insane case of tendonitis or something. I went to several doctors until I even figured out it was hives and to this day I have not a single goshdarn clue what caused it, and I don't even have any allergies. And I was also told it might just be stress even though it wasn't like... an exceptionally stressful time for me back then. My aunt (who is a nurse) said it could also be caused by eating less-than-fresh food, and I admit i do kind of have a very bad habit of not throwing food away even when it's not really fit to eat, but I'm not sure if that's it. Anyway, if this sounds weirdly overenthusiastic, its because that was a uniquely horrible experience for me and I am happy not to be alone in it and wanted to commiserate.

wow, seeing that old Simply Kenna apology video was a SHOCK to my system. Didn't expect to come in being the resident expert, but I definitely remember her uploading a follow-up apology video apologizing for the insincerity of the poetry apology 😂 The second apology was just her talking to a camera, and she more clearly stated what she apologized for. I'm just going off memory, but I'm pretty sure people were mad that she 1) made a video giving guidance on Buddhism after only picking up the religion within the past few years, 2) was not giving proper credit to artists, 3) seemingly fetishized fictional and real-life male/male ships (often anime or K-pop boys) after coming out as asexual, and that seemed hypocritical. Lastly, not saying this as an excuse, just wanted to share more context, but a few years after the original apology videos, she came out with a video saying she got diagnosed with autism or aspergers or something at the age of 23, and that's why she often has trouble reading emotions or expressing emotions. Anyways she doesn't upload much anymore but I follow her on ig because I find her visuals really calming. Also sorry if someone already said all this, I didn't read all the comments yet. I'm enjoying the ramble so far! Thanks Jenny!

I have been searching for YEARS to figure out a trigger for my hives. Mine are not typical hives in that there's no like gross skin stuff or joint inflammation, just burning and itching and pain. My working theory is that it's a reaction to Prednisone. I've read a lot of studies on hives and the connection between drug allergies (also hashimotos disease bc I have that) and sometimes drug allergies can present like hives. What sold me on this was that antihistamines even up to 4 or more times a day were barely touching the symptoms. Apparently it depends on what kind of reaction it is and some reactions are not histamine caused. Idk if that will help you at all. Both times I had my worst breakouts I had been on a course of Prednisone and that was the only change in my life. The first time it stayed in my system for a whole summer. I recommend Eucerin Excema lotion and colloidal oatmeal baths. Those are the only things that brought me relief. Of course they prescribed me steroids aka Prednisone to stop the hives and that probably made it worse 😭 hope you can figure it out!

Okay, so I've been thinking about Jenny's poll business. I haven't even finished the video yet! I'm not even on the Voting Committee, but I love a riddle. Let's suppose Jenny has 4 weeks to make the poll and the video. And Week 4 is for recording and editing the video, so: >Week 1: a normal poll with four options, visible results, people strategizing, and so on. Fun and chaos. >Week 2: the "cut week." Jenny blindly chooses a day from 1 to 7 to cut the poll and take the two most-voted options. This way Jenny can't be accused of "cutting" while her favourite was winning, and bad-faith actors can't really predict when the poll will close, so they can't really rig it. >Week 3 (+ the remaining Week 2 days) is just a blind A vs. B poll between the two most voted. A blind poll because I think it's fun that the finished video being released is when you finally find out if your favourite has won (and you can't really strategize with two options anyway). And if "A vs. B" ends in a tie, just flip a coin! This way I think you have the best of both worlds, with the thrill and strategy during the first week and the intrigue at the end. Maybe a bit twisted? It feels like a TV game show. I don't know, I just thought it was an interesting riddle. I'm sorry! I should better go and finish watching the video! I'm so sorry you went through all of that and it happened so many times, that sounds like the worst absolute nightmare to have to deal with all of these at once, and it seems like you got misdiagnosed to a degree which is why you got prescribed medication that did the opposite of helping which is always just the worst experience ever. I'm glad that you at least figured it out, by the sound of it, since your theory does check out from how you described it. I also got a steroid shot at the emergency room to calm down the swelling of my hand and it did work, they also prescribed me steroid pills but I didn't want to take them because I was afraid of the long term side effects (yeah I went on google and got scared but it seemed better safe than sorry in that particular case). It sounds like our cases are different since I also took antihistamines and it did help reduce the worst of the symptoms but at least now if I ever (knock on wood, tfu tfu tfu) have to deal with it again I'll know what patterns to look for in trying to find the cause.

There were times where I've started an in person RDT (relationship drama talk) by showing something I'd written but in my experience things actually escalate more over text. Different things work for different people, I'm sure! We're both neurodivergent and have trauma in ways that make verbal tone kind of unreliable for us anyway and we're both particular about language. Over text, we always clarify tone if it's not already clear and try to remember a few mantras (Would I prefer to be right or would I prefer to be happy, assume positive intent, etc.) I also have been heavily gaslit before (the actual kind, not the internet kind) so it helps to have conversation transcripts. Anyway, I always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel comfortable being vulnerable. It sounds like you and your partner have figured out a good rhythm and I hope you're both happy!

I feel Loganpaul and Jaystation do rely on the idea of them being idiots or appearing to be idiots to release them of some flack. If their conduct was a one off with no consistent pattern of behavior I’d feel to grant it but it doesn’t appear to be. Hell Jay himself seems to mock people actually upset with him for being mad at him. At a certain point it looks less like ignorance and weaponized ignorance—their perceived lack of understanding is what they think will protect them. Think of Peter Griffen in his mental disability—he is disabled, honestly, but he used it as an excuse to be an utter monster to those around him. I agree Miranda and Ellen(who tbf is accused of far less bad things), appear fully aware of what and why people are mad at them, it’s easier to see their “apologies” as an attack on their detractors for being unreasonable.

It really made them look bad, even if it wasn't as heinous as it could have been.

I think Jenny makes some good points about apology videos and calls attention to some of the reasons why people are very cynical about apology videos and, sometimes, apologies in general. Apologies fall flat when the person is apologizing for something that they have done repeatedly, for behavior that they have made a staple of their public image, and for behavior they continue to do. Apologies also come off badly when the person apologizing tries to use the apology to deny what they did or for self-promotion, accuse other people of being the problem because of way they reacted to what they did (or the fact that they reacted at all), try to hide behind the idea that they made a "mistake" rather than a deliberate choice when people can tell it really was a bad decision that they made as a deliberate choice (doubly so when they are known to have ignored protests and advice not to carry forward with their bad decision), and/or show more concern for their own feelings than those of other people. I think that the ability to apologize sincerely is a vital life skill that can also be a potentially career-saving move, but I also think that too many people in our society have not learned this skill and that some are directly opposed to learning it. One of the hardest things about a sincere apology is accepting the fact that you feel bad about yourself because of what you did, and some people try too hard to avoid feeling bad at all, so they can't adequately work through and resolve their feelings or address the feelings of the other people involved. I think people get the idea that, if you feel bad about yourself for something you did, you must hate everything about yourself and your life, but that's blowing it out of proportion. A temporary bad feeling that motivates you to change your behavior for the better in some way is normal and healthy. A sincere apology also includes taking responsibility and making some kind of restitution or behavioral change to remedy the problems the person caused, and I think too many people are afraid to do that because they think that it will cost them too much in some way and that they won't be able to handle it. Again, it's blowing things out of proportion. So many problems could be resolved if people would deal with them earlier, when they're smaller, instead of digging in deeper or blowing them up with their own overreaction.

I do love that sarcophagus. I don't like the apology or the person delivering it in that scene; I just really like the idea of having a room with a sarcophagus in it. I wouldn't want a real museum piece in a private home, but there is something delightfully eccentric about wanting a human-sized piece of decor to make your room look more like a museum. Jaystation's choice to wear a shirt that says "Heaven Don't Want Me" while making a public apology is also interesting.

I think Jenny's apology video for not releasing FNAF/ending the apology video with an apology is B tier. To use her rubric: - Jenny clearly states what she's apologizing for - Jenny doesn't have a prepared statement and there's a lot of verbal ellipses to understate the impact. - Jenny uses a lot of ironic / self-referential / jokey tropes to minimize the grievous offense (inefficiently making a video about a topic I don't even care about but will watch repeatedly) I feel like it could have been raised to S tier if, instead copying the YTer who covered the webcam with their hand, she instead spontaneously improvised rhyming couplets.

oh my god no u don’t understand I was there for the SimplyKenna drama; that “poem” video was BYE SISTER to me !!! but anyways if I remember right, she was accused of all sorts of stuff. One of them was claiming that certain art was her own original art when it turned out to be from Pinterest (same w her tattoos) and she’d like tell ppl they couldn’t even print “her art” out to put on their wall without crediting her (to where, I’m still not sure). She also “attacked” this creator who went by Lunestelle(? I think) bc they had the same “aesthetic” & she thought she “owned” it. She also “appropriated” a lot of Buddhist practices (it’s kinda complicated, she identified as Buddhist but she had Buddha head statues which are offensive in Buddhist culture so she was called out for being performative). Similar situation in another case where ppl think she “fetishizes” Japanese culture or people. (Just to be clear, I’m not making any opinions one way or another on if she did these things but what I do care about is that) she ended up making another apology video for that “poem” video (supposedly it was generally taken well bc she followed the advice of her critics but then she ends it by saying she monetized it lol) and then completely rebranded to Cozy_Kitsune.

My big thing with apology videos having cuts is like. Okay if the whole video has cuts and its edited the way you edit a video, thats fine and normal. but if there's ONLY ONE cut. thats weird. you can do all cuts or no cuts, but if its inconsistent then it does feel wrong

Thank you to all of the comments for (semi-)justifying my visceral disgust of the flower crown girl's apology...seems she never did anything irredeemable, but she does sound like an *incredibly* exhausting type of person. (For any other latecomers who don't want to plumb the comments, sounds like her biggest sins outside of the crappy apology were 1) regularly tracing/copying other people's art while being extremely defensive about her own brand, 2) indulging in fujoshi shenanigans while being vocally asexual, and 3) revealing she's autistic to justify some of her behaviour after getting called out. None of these things are explicitly bad by themselves, but they do paint a picture of a very annoying personality type, IMO)

I actually remember that simplykenna scandal - not only did she claim to draw those tattoos herself, but she bullied and sent her followers after others who “copied her” (one of which was publicly dealing with the death of a family member at the time). She actually did release a second apology that was good! Only to admit later that a random person in her inbox actually ghost wrote it for her (which is why I remember it so viscerally)

I don't know anything about her but about 2) - there are people on the ace spectrum who enjoy sex in fiction even if they don't feel sexual attraction themselves irl. I think this is actually fairly common? Because reading about it or something like that is just not the same as feeling it yourself, and it can be intense and sexy anyway. Asexuality isn't necessarily the same as having no interest in sex at all, asexual people can also have a libido and have sex in real life while still not feeling sexual attraction. It's a complex spectrum. (I know it can be hard to wrap your head around it but think about it this way, I as a non-asexual person can also just hook up with someone I'm not attracted to and still have fun.) Maybe this girl was just really weird about it, idk, I am very familiar with the ~issues~ in like, fujoshi spaces. I could write a whole essay about that. But I wanted to say something about this point because I think asexuality is often misunderstood :)

It makes total sense and I didn't intend to dismiss anyone's sexuality, apologies if I came across that way. The key factor of my grievance is the fact she was (apparently) very vocal about being asexual: that's perfectly fine in a vacuum, but being extremely fujo suggests that flower girl isn't particularly deep into the ace spectrum in the sense that she can feel significant sexual arousal towards certain beautiful men. And that itself isn't a bad thing either, but IMO making a spectacle of it feels narcissistic, which in turn supports my argument that she seems like an exhausting person to be around. (As a personal anecdote, her scenario reminds me of a friend I had in uni, who would always complain about being broke despite coming from a ultra-rich family. His parents cut off his giant allowance early in his degree and he genuinely didn't have much cash for going out, so he absolutely had a right to complain. But hearing someone who's only technically/temporarily poor whine about a lack of expendable income was...irritating, to say the least.)

I just wanted to second the above comment and confirm that people who *are* completely asexual (or anywhere on the spectrum) can and very frequently do enjoy sexual fiction, and can and do enjoy the aesthetics of others. Almost every ace spec person I know, myself included, falls under that category. (Which is not to say it's everyone, but it's not uncommon, and does not invalidate the lack of personal sexual attraction or desire for sexual intimacy.) This is a totally non-judgemental comment btw! Just adding this purely as a PSA. I know this is an older video but I was rewatching and have some fun stuff to add. First of idk if the other comments have mentioned this but boots is like a large highish end drug store. The kind of place that working class people go to to get gift beauty stuff and that maybe middle class people might get their beauty stuff from regularly. It very much has department store vibes. Secondly my family has has that exact same sarcophagus as jaystation since before I was born and Jenny is completely correct you do in fact forget about the sarcophagus. There have been so many times that I have had guests over and been surprised for a second when they come over and ask about what the sarcophagus is (they're cd and dvd cases) because I am so used to the fact that the sarcophagus is there that it never registers on my radar. My parents house is pretty badly made and has a lot of issues that end up with us having a lot of ghost story's but in a paranormal homes inspectors way. And I have so so many times warned guests about the stuff that is gonna seem creepy but is actually just fine only for them to get here and be surprised that in that tour I completely neglected to mention the sarcophagus. We do however always remember to decorate her for Christmas and Halloween
