***EDIT Oct 24th: The small snowflake on the moon was replaced with a bigger one (same as the other one) to prevent any printing problems.***

Good day my friends! Here's another christmas model for you folks! A nice, super cute, Santa shadow box!

Just like the other shadow boxes, this project doesnt need any support at all and with the right colors, you can almost feel the cold air of Christmas Eve!

The project is super simple, but you will need a bit of dexterity to glue the parts together. Because they are mounted on little pegs at the back of each plate, gluing them together is a bit tricky.

The best trick i have found, is to glue the stack of discs together (by adding glue to the end of each little peg) and then put a dictionnary on top of the stack to let it dry a few minutes. It was the most effective way to do it for me. Also, using a gel glue will help a lot.

When gluing, be careful to the orientation of each part. Refer to the front view of the assembly to see the orientation and placement of each part.

The assembly is very simple in reality, you will find only 3 views for the instructions, and one of those views is the final assembly... 😅

Note: For this kind of project, i strongly recommend putting more bottom and top layers when slicing/printing the parts. You don't wanna have some infill in the lighted parts.

That being said, here's my filament selection for this project:

-White: Polymaker - Polylite white

-Teal: Polymaker - Polyterra Teal

-Muted Blue: Polymaker - Polyterra Muted Blue

-Medium Blue: Polymaker - Polylite Blue

-Dark Blue: Polymaker - Polyterra Army Blue

Finally, here's the hardware needed: You will need (4x) M3x6mm screws and your favorite LED strip or Fairy lights.

So that's it my friend! Have fun!

Im working on this print right now using the .3mf file and the black snow flake under the reindeer is not slicing properly. Any ideas how to fix it? The middle of the snowflake doesnt show up after its sliced After doing some more troubleshooting it appears that the lower snowflake inside lines are not the same width as the other snow flake. They are thin and will not print with .4 nozzle unless detect thin walls is turned on. With this option on the preview of the print does not look good. If I change the settings to a .2 nozzle then it appear that it may print correctly. Could you revise this file so that it can be printed with the standard .4 nozzle?

I've made an update. The second snow flake is bigger and the files are replaced in the dropbox. ;) Its curious, because the line width of the snowflake was at 0.4mm and mine printed perfectly without issues... Don't know what may cause that. I have a 0.4 nozzle, 0.4 layer width and the "detect thin line " is not even on... But in the end, it doesnt really matter, the new files are in the dropbox and the 3mf has been updated too. ;) Have a nice day my friend! :) Pascal

Awesome. Thanks for the update. Its the last piece I needed to print to complete this. For the lights did you install the on the back plate or around the inside edge of the box?

Ive been printing the plates on a textured plate to rid the print of print lines. Would it be possible to embed the black details and make the raised area its own part. This would allow for the showing face to be printed face down like the rest. Another thought would be to have the moon have a lithophane option that would show a moon texture.

What LED lights are you using? I've always done fairy lights, but they don't light evenly for shadow boxes. Any recommendations?

Hello Chris! I'm using conventional LED strips, the type that you can cut to lenght. You have two options where to mount them: Directly on the backplate, with a "snake" pattern to cover more surface, or around the light box. One of my french followers made this cool video to illustrate how to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5mAOMYJTC8 When using a snake pattern on the backplate, i use those clips. Its easier to curve the led strip with them: https://www.amazon.com/Threetwofour-Installation-Mounting-Adhesive-0-31-0-39in/dp/B08F5G7SRQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=led+clips&qid=1698431353&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

Will longer screws work? I have m3x12mm and would prefer not to buy a new set of screws since I don't use them very often.
