This was supposed to be a cute / short little comic - but apparently, I can't control myself. Hope you like it!

Zoe Storm

Love it very much

Tim

Sweet!... Prophecy?...hopefully.

Helena Grace

Yeah this is is utterly fantastic. Great premise, amazing story telling, and as always outstanding art.

Erica Rost

This is a great story!

Robertlouis

That was very different, and, excuse the pun, quite a departure in both theme and style for you, Emory. And in the end, an inspiring and uplifting conclusion to a thirty year journey which seemed unlikely at the outset. I really liked the changes in the art style, showing your versatility again. A really enjoyable story. Just one thing - the hanging thread of the damaged robodoc, and it’s clear that there’s been either an external attack on the ship or trouble on board. What happened? Is the ship able to return and will it jeopardise future missions? And yes, I’m angling for a continuation, of course! x

Kris Greg

I'm glad that you were able to make time to branch out into a cool stand alone story. I'm a major science fiction & fantasy fan, so I enjoyed this. It made me think of stories that I've enjoyed over the years like the short lived Earth-2 or Larry Nivn's 1st published story, "The Warriors."

Erin Halfelven at BigCloset

Intensely beautiful. I've seen superficially similar stories, even plotted one out ages ago. But this is near perfect. Thank you.

M Fielding

Nicely done, Emory. I quite enjoyed the way the protagonist found their mindset shifting throughout and the final irony of the ending fit well.

Lionel Rockman

This is great, so close to what I have fantasized for my self.

Omagathief

Will there be a PDF of this?

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you very much, Lionel. I really enjoyed writing this one. I'm a big sci-fi fan!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Tim! I hope so - well, maybe not the Earth dying part hehe

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Hel! This was supposed to be, like, six panels maximum. 😂

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you Robert! ❤️ As you know, I'm a big sci-fi fan... and I was in the mood for a mix of hopeful / dystopian. I think the apocalyptic setting gave me a framework where Jaxon's transition wasn't just personal but necessary for species survival. The damaged robo-doc... hehe, You're right that it's a deliberate loose end. Without giving too much away, let's just say that not everyone on the ship was as willing to embrace their transition as Jaxon eventually did. There may have been a rebellion of sorts. And yes, the ship is meant to make return journeys to collect more colonists...if it can. Would I consider a continuation? Absolutely! I'm thinking about a companion piece from the perspective of one of the first-wave colonists who helped build New Eden, or perhaps exploring what happened during that "incident" on the ship.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Kris! 💕 Earth-2 is such an underrated gem (canceled way too soon!), and any comparison to Larry Niven is incredibly flattering - "The Warriors" was such a formative story for me. I've always loved to explore themes of adaptation and survival through a trans lens, and I think science fiction gives us this perfect canvas to really examine identity when everything else is stripped away. I hoped there was something interesting about using the apocalypse to explore transition - when the world is ending, what parts of ourselves do we cling to, and what parts are we willing to let evolve? ☺️

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Erin! ❤️ Funny how certain story ideas seem to float in the collective consciousness, isn't it? I'd love to hear about your plotted story sometime!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, M! 💕The ending was something I wrestled with a bit. I wanted that bittersweet quality - the hope of New Eden contrasted with Earth's fate. Hopefully others made it off-world!

SingularCurve

OMG Amazing story of hope and liberation!

Emory Ahlberg

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Singular! Too bad the world had to end, but I'm happy Jaxon made it out. 💖

Jade Diaz

I like that even on a dying earth there’s still Nintendo

2026-09-14 23:00 It was really fun to read. I think it could have been more developed ( how the new society decide who will become some men to help to repopulate the new world ( i'd love a rebellion off ex-men who are rejected). Is the population big enough to survive and have enough gene diversity. Will they continue the mistakes done in earth one... etc...) but you clearly wanted a one shot and it's cool, I'll just imagine that for myself. ( not sure it'll end well)😁

So, where do I sign up? For me the story had elements and themes that moved from and reminded me initially of Blade Runner and then later Mass Effect. I loved the hopefully outlook happy conclusion to this sweet story.

Kris Greg

I know that there are other sci-fi gems that are slipping my mind. Earth-2 deserved more than it got. Do you remember a Disney TV movie called Earthstar Voyager? It was clearly meant to be the pilot for a show that was never made. Your Earth reminds me of the Earth from that movie.

Nice Complete Change Rare Story More Requested Emory

Garlic Witch

That was a lot of bleak and a little bit of hope. I wonder if they gave Jaxon some mind alerting drugs to help...adjust

Ucciuburdu

I love this story Emory. :) I know you mostly focused on TSF stories, but I have a feeling about this one. All corporate Jaxon dealt were females. First wave were females only. Second one too. And Jaxon child is female also. It's like Meridian-Voss corp plans for New Eden are for a female-only society. I'm sure Meridian-Voss would have the technology to do something like that. It would be interesting writing a side story about that. Their goal would be to create a female-only world, because this way they could control birth rate to avoid over-population like on Earth, and a woman-only society would be kinder and less prone to conflict without men. Meridian-Voss would have the technology to do that. They could physically transform and mind control colonists to accept New Eden is made only by woman. They of course developed a technology to allow reproduction between females too.

Yeah, yup, mhm. Seems you've cooked, again. 👌 Love the Cyberpunk and Mass Effect vibes it's giving; also... gah, just so good!!

Emory Ahlberg

Mario is forever - unless he evolves into Maria! 🏳️‍⚧️

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Nolwenn! I think this setting has a lot of potential. I'd love to revisit New Eden in the future. One idea that I had is that the damage to the RoboDoc was caused by a rebellion of men who weren't taking their transition as well as Jaxon. 😉

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Gemma! I was hoping for a dystopian to hope story. As a fan of Star Trek, I really enjoy those... and I feel I really need them these days, too!

Emory Ahlberg

Really happy you liked it, Sky. I do enjoy those quite a bit, too. ☺️

Emory Ahlberg

Yeah, quite bleak for anybody left behind... But I think New Eden has the potential to be a very nice place. And bet the first wave of settlers was very happy to receive a whole colony ship's worth of new girls. 😉 (Even if most would be quite hormonal in short order!)

Emory Ahlberg

💕 💕 💕 Thanks so much, Diana! That is pretty much the exact vibe I was going for, to be honest. With maybe a little early TNG thrown in at the end, hehe

stacy C

That was fab Em....the art was gorgeous, especially the space stuff :-) x

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Ucci! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. 💕 And wow, you've picked up on something cool there. You're absolutely right that Jaxon only interacted with female staff, all the waves mentioned are female, and her child is female too. That's... not accidental. 😉 The story was meant to be somewhat open-ended about Meridian-Voss's true intentions. Are they simply optimizing for population growth like they claim? Or is there a larger social engineering project happening here? The fact that they're so methodical about everything - down to the "premium gene-lines" - suggests they have very specific plans for New Eden. Maybe we'll return to New Eden someday and find out what Meridian-Voss was really building out there in the dark. Maybe even this month! Haha
