The confession ends. Kayla arrives at the diner and hears truths that shatter everything she believed about who came back to her. Love isn't always enough to save someone... sometimes it's the thing that drowns them. And sometimes goodbye is the only kindness left.

Homecoming - Episode 35 is here!

Thank you for your patience while I finished this one. It ended up being significantly longer (42 pages!) and more emotionally complex than I anticipated. It's also the penultimate episode of Season 3.

(Homecoming has 12 episodes per season which I've somehow been very strict about despite everything else running wild 😼)

This episode has been living in my head for months - Kayla's arrival at the diner, the confrontation, Kris's confession about what happened after Bella released her. I knew exactly how it needed to feel, exactly where it needed to land, and I couldn't bring myself to cut it short just to hit a word count or panel target.

Some episodes are just... heavier than others. This is one of them.

All the pieces are moving into position. Kris has made her choice. Ben has made his. And Kayla... poor Kayla. She deserves so much better than any of this.

I hope the weight of this episode lands the way I intended. Thank you for sticking with this story. Thank you for your patience! And thank you for caring about these characters as much as I do.

Now let's see what fresh hell awaits them next. 💕

P.S. I know this seems like a dark story. But I promise you - I'm not in the business of breaking hearts just to break them. Kris deserves happiness. Kayla deserves peace. And Ben deserves... something. Trust me. We'll get there. Just... not tonight.

Wow 😮 , I’m kind of shaking. In a good way though 😃. Thanks Emory 😘

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Tuor! Whose side are you on? Kris or Chris? 😉 (Love you profile picture by the way!!!)

Tuor

I’m so into Kris 💕. I had been hoping to get to sleep but I guess that won’t happen for a while 🤨. I’ll probably just sit and think . . .

Andre

Emory, I hope something great comes out of this for Kris and Kayla. Kris is way to cold for my taste, I understand what she doing, but still, way to cold. Kayla has been through enough pain already. The pain she is going through now can cause a person to never love or be loved again. Benji maybe there to help her, but there relationship when Kris back into her life is now gone. P.S. Emory, this is dark, but great. The extra time was well spent.

Emory Ahlberg

Kris is beautiful and fierce! She will do anything to protect the people she loves…

Tim

No equivocation... Chris and/or Kris is fucked.

Emory Ahlberg

I’m with you, Andre. I feel really bad for Kayla. Chris was the love of her life. Benji was there to catch her when she fell, but he’s no Christopher Bowman. Kayla endured a lot, as I tried to show in that brief flashback… Grief, fear, the pain of not knowing… I promise I’m not in the habit of torturing good, loving characters for fun. But she’s definitely at a low point right now. Thank you for caring about her! 💕

Oh no... I could see the context of that Cindy shot (and related ones of Kris) coming from the teaser... Honestly, finally escaping a prostitution ring only to be forced to work the streets to earn money just to learn a normal trade sure helps explain Cindy's hardened sharpness. As if the rest of her history we already knew didn't as well! Really hoping she finds a way to some kind of happiness now that she's clawed back some control over her life, and that she can help Isaiah have an easier time of it than she did. My feelings about the Kristine/Christopher situation remain - I get what Kris is doing, she's still trying to protect everyone and work towards a goal where she's free to live her life and everyone who's ever been important to her and Chris is safe! It's just a shame that she's so vehemently suppressing, denying, and even demeaning Chris in the process. Surely this is building towards something that'll ultimately work out, but you're definitely keeping me guessing as to what! Oh yes, and look which officer arrested Kris for solicitation that night... surely a complete coincidence that isn't going to have any further implications on the story at all...

Yep, still great

What as story. So heart breaking with no apparent winners. Kayla’s love for Christopher is unbelievably strong. I hold Kayla’s in such high regard, someone who does and did not give up on her love for Chris. Even seeing the complicated grief she already went though from the time Chris went missing (another type of ambiguous loss), The limbo type emotional state she previously has encountered and experienced. Trying to manage the uncertainty ( is he alive or dead) as she oscillated between attaching to and then detaching from hope. Emory, your understanding of complicated aspects within grief are truly amazing. Cumulating in capturing the angst and tragic cruelty Kayla is now going through within the uncertainty now as she grasps of holding onto any skerrick of hope around reuniting with the love of her life. On a separate note. I do not hold the same high level of regard for Ben. I just don’t trust him. Even at the end of this episode I question his motives around helping Kris. He claims the high ground here, suggesting he is motivated to help Kris get Petrov in order to protect other girls from this man’s abuse. However, it seems to me Ben’s hidden agenda here more related to ensuring ‘Chris never comes back,’ and about securing his own relationship with Kayla. The images in this episode are amazing, Kris has never looked so beautiful. The images are so life like and real. Call out to Cindy, she looks oh so cute and pretty in the image of her you created in this episode.

This episode is really interesting between psychological struggles of Kris and Chris as well as adding Kayla to the mix. Kayla really trying to reach Chris from within Kris, but no budge unlike last time from the hospital. The perspectives and interactions between Kris and Kayla is deep. From Kayla perspective, she just wants Chris back in her life, but at the same time Kris wants to be her own person and live own life. Kris is not being heartless to Kayla, but at the same time, she found renewed love with Alan, despite working for Bella from behind the scenes to protect them. She mostly platonic and caring to Kayla's feelings. The two scenes that got my attention was the psychological minds between Chris and Kris. When Chris regain control temporary, Kris was being suppress in an ocean of darkness within their mind. I wonder what happened after he cuts Kris' hair. As Kris and Benji were talking at the diner, Chis was trying so desperately to regain control to come back despite Kris coming in terms of who she was and now. Back Kris' Mindspace, Chis is becoming one with Kris by slowly transforming from his appearance and voice to becoming Her's.

OMG! Just WOW!!! Simply WOW!!!! Well worth the extra time and waiting. A powerful episode. Insightful into several characters. More back story, drama, friction, emotion, and even a reconciliation of sorts between Benji and Kris/Chris.

Crewchick

I feel so awful for Kayla. She does deserve better. I think the character Kris is absolutely stunning. But there is a cold harness to her that is much less attractive. Likewise her contempt for Chris (which is her) also rubs me wrong. I get where it is coming from, but that degree of dissociative break, just screams serious mental and emotional trauma. Likewise the relationship with Allen sets off a lot of bells for me. Being a widower is not a fast pass to seeking out prostitutes. And the risk doing so when sole parent of a young boy throws up a lot of red flags for judgement. And as an investigative reporter he gets a fail for not recognizing that there was something majorly wrong with Bella's and the way the girls behaved. And Benji. I really want to like him, and I almost do. But we still don't know his back story. His agreement to help seems a little too quick. And also as someone else pointed out in previous weeks, Chris' capture doe not appear to be thoroughly random. Was Benji in on it? We likely won't know until at least the next chapter.

Sometimes stories get darker, and sometimes they’re just meant to be dark. I don’t mind it at all, especially when they’re this well-written with such great character development. And, well… I am a horror-movie fan, so I’m still loving this just as much as before!

Kris Greg

Damn this is intense! It was worth the wait.

Thomas Tolliver

Almond milk?? Is he unaware of the environmental impacts!? Oatmilk all the way!

Maggie Heels

That was FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF deep as FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF... Geeezzz!!! In my very personal and very subjective imagination I see a scene placed couple months or maybe couple years from now, where Kris, Alan, Benji and Kayla are sitting on a bench in the park... all happy with Kris (who has again as long and bushy hair as possible) all looking at the kid (Dustin) playing with his dog... that would be brain relaxing view after this "fictional" stressful scene...

Thomas Tolliver

Page 35, Loved -> Lived. Also, this was definitely a tear jerker.

2026-09-14 23:00 What a good episode. I really like how the things turn in this serie. And It look ike the red headhair don't want that chris/kris to be free. Also I like that even in his head Christopher can't see himself as a man anymore. It's tell a lot of his mindset. If i was chris, I pull the 0 chanel. The rest of the TV program seems to be knocking out

p.s. I tried to DM this bit but I wasn't allowed :(

I Believe the only way back at this point is, possibly Med Student "Dr." Chris will take over when something life threateningly bad happens to someone that Kris/Chris love, and ultimately He gets his Love and control Permanently Back???

That last image of the remote control was the killing shot to the heart after round after round was pumped into it. I hope that, somehow, the DID is resolved in such a way that Kris and Chris can merge and he comfortable. I also hope that Ben isn't the bad guy I'm assuming he is. Once again, you have delivered a high octane jolt of emotion that just breaks through every barrier and leaves me quivering like jelly and more concerned for these fictional characters than I am for a great many, allegedly real people. The combination of your writing and your art is breathtaking. In a world filling up with AI slop, you are a beacon of hope and talent.

I must have read this episode at least half a dozen times, to make sure that I capture all the emotional nuances, power and tension that flow through the dialogue and the art. One thing bothers me. Seeing the Cunt carrying out Kris’s arrest when we’ve seen plenty of evidence of connections between the police and Bella’s organisation, involving her, is just too much of a coincidence. It casts a shadow on Ben too, although I hope not. Given what Bella has said to Kris I’m not sure if she has anything to do with the arrest or if the Cunt has her own agenda and it’s all part of a wider corruption scandal within the police. Kris’s confession about the duality of her personality and the constant conflict with Chris is so compelling and revealing. Ben has been hearing it for so long that he’s finally starting to accept it, but for Kayla it’s all too much, and she is just psychologically incapable of accepting everything she’s being told in a sudden torrent, when all she wants is something she sees as simple, but Kris sees as impossible: a return to how things were three years before. Kris is resolute and has to be. Any wavering on her part and the chance of securing a safe and normal life for herself and everyone she loves and cares for will be lost forever. That’s what’s at stake. That’s a purely objective summary of the chapter, which doesn’t reflect the stunning facial expressions throughout, Kayla’s increasing anguish and panic, the melancholic beauty of Kris’s drowning metaphors or the crushing cry of agony in the final two illustrations. It’s an absolute tour de force, Emory. You said in your introductory remarks that we’d get there. It’s what we’ll find there that worries me.

This is so peak, I love it

Kirsten Roberts

Everything you create is amazing but this is by far the best thing you’ve ever done. I’m addicted. I can’t wait for the next one

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Kirsten! 💕 That honestly stops me in my tracks, kinda. Homecoming is dark and complex, and it's hard to write sometimes... but knowing it’s resonating like this makes every late night worth it!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Roz! I was aiming for the emotional crescendo haha. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Robert, you always see right to the bone of the story! 💕 You're right to be suspicious about the arrest. There is rot in the Chicago PD... whether Ben is part of that rot or just blind to it is the question that haunts Kris even now... I also feel terrible for Kayla. She doesn't deserve any of this. Is the man she wanted to marry truly gone? Or is he only waiting for her to, somehow, pull him back again from the depths?

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Ellen! 💖 Your comment about the art means so much. I pour A lot of effort into those expressions to make sure the humanity comes through. As for Kris and Chris merging... that is the ideal outcome, isn't it? But right now, it feels less like a merger and more like a war for survival. I think they are too jagged to fit together without cutting each other right now... but we'll see! And your gut check on Ben is valid. He’s walking a very thin line between loyalty to his badge and loyalty to his friend, and I’m not sure even he knows which side he’ll fall on yet!

Emory Ahlberg

Nolwenn, I think you hit on the true horror of Bella’s work... For Kirs, she has not just changed the body, but also she has rewritten the internal map. Even in the sanctuary of his own mind, Chris can't remember what it feels like to be a man anymore.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you for the catch. My eyes definitely glaze over after staring at these pages for so long!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Maggie! Awww... that image is like a warm blanket. I think we all need that mental picture right now after the wringer I just put everyone through lol

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris! I wanted this chapter to feel like a held breath... that you had to keep on holding! 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Right there with you, Ella! I think shying away from the darkness would do a disservice to the story. Trauma isn’t tidy, and survival is often ugly. Treating this with the weight of psychological horror feels like the only honest way to explore what Bella did! 💕

SingularCurve

That last scene with Chris is heartbreaking and brings the whole episode together. Kris is going to get her revenge on the ATM, but how is yet to be seen. Another amazing episode!

Emory Ahlberg

I continue to feel bad for Chris... and Kris! They both need to find each a way to work / be together again. Thank you, Singular! 💕

Wow!....that was a bit of a rollercoaster.....great writing though Em x
