--I love playing around with their power dynamic. In the revamp, Ellie is older but still small and mighty. Grave is younger, but 220+ lbs of flesh and bone. He's pinning her down initially, but then she pulls him in with her legs and reestablishes her dominance. She's thinking "You can physically overwhelm me, but I'm still the one in control." It's absolutely NOT true lol because Ellie's just as emotionally unstable as Grave, but there are times where he may feel more desperate and needier than her. It's fun how messy this concept is. They're using sex as a way to cope, despite knowing how destructive that can be. It's like the darkness closes in on them the more they avoid deeper issues, but the deeper issues are so painful that it's almost justifiable.

It’s messy, but I think it’s okay that they’re finding solace in each other and pleasure where they can. They’re both also being super aware of their situation and capabilities. Side note: As a small female grappler, it’s VERY important to note that being on your back with your legs wrapped around someone actually does give you a certain amount of physical control. In a dangerous situation, you can pull them closer so they can’t hit you or really access their legs; you can put your feet on their hips to push them further away, then kick them in the face. It’s not nearly as vulnerable a position as the patriarchy would have us believe. Obviously having your hands pinned by someone enormous isn’t ideal, but the power dynamic created there is something of an illusion, too, since she knows he’s not going to hurt her. Just spreading some awareness of our own inherent power!

Thanks for the insight! I think about their power dynamic more symbolically and on an emotional level. Most human relationships feel like a dance for power that shifts back and forth. People often navigate fears of rejection, abandonment, vulnerability, being misunderstood, or they worry about the other person failing to live up to an idealized image they may have projected onto them. Deep down, it's like we're unconsciously trying to get the upper hand to feel safer and more secure. It reminds me of David and Goliath: it isn't always about raw might. It's possible for a person to impose their will onto the world in a profound way without being a colossal force. Sometimes it's about brute strength, other times it's about making an impact on someone's heart.

Totally agree! I’m not being a literalist—Plus playing with power dynamics in bed is a whole other thing, and I love that your work portrays the many layers that reality takes on in bed. I can just never resist the opportunity to do a LITTLE bit of women’s self defense instruction. 😉 You never know who needs to hear it.
