Anthony Carlson

Quick turnaround! Is this a record? 😂

Cole Jennett

About the same as last week I think

Shad Kanyak

I read today they may try to milk a 4th season out of this show. Must have some former Walking Dead writers on staff.

K, Zachary

I just realized Pedro Pascal was in the Equalizer 2. Huh? I have seen that movie a dozen times. Never realized.

TheSingulatarian

Was that Joey Pants playing the old guy who gets infected?

Uncle Phoenix

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” — Greek Proverb And Cassie said, “Joel was the show.”

Cole Jennett

No moderator would moderate that post, there was nothing wrong with it. Unless it’s been edited since you posted🧐

Cole Jennett

Joel isn’t the show. He was a huge part of it though

Uncle Phoenix

“It’s Not Over.” That’s what I say.

Ria Grix

I was watching some YouTube thingy and a super expert virologist was saying there would be no chance of making a vaccine out of whatever Ellie has in her brain stem. And even if Abby’s dad was a world expert chemist (doctors don’t make vaccines & medicines, well PhD doctors do, but not medical doctors), how would he synthesise enough of it to vaccinate more than just a few people without a large scale pharmaceutical industry, you need labs (hospitals don’t make vaccines & medicines, just administer them), how would they distribute this vaccine across the country… or the world. Personally I think Abby’s dad was on some kind of saviour complex trip, he was deluding himself, or just desperate to be the guy who saved the world. So in conclusion, Joel did the right thing.

TechJJ

Of course real world this is not possible. This story is FICTION. In this fictional story, the characters, with their FICTIONAL science, have high confidence with the cure. More flash backs will enforce this FICTIONAL belief.

Clay F

Tech -- that's interesting. I was shocked when Joel nodded his head yes. I know nothing of the game or any backstory. The S1 fiction didn't give enough info to draw a strong conclusion. Based on the fiction depicted in S1E1 to S2E5, my thought was some two-bit doctor years into the apocalypse didn't really know if vaccine feasible, and if so, no idea about the efficacy. That would have not been enough for me to let the doctor kill my child. I was team Joel 100%. You really have to suspend disbelief to buy the fiction that the vaccine was anything more than a 1 in a million chance.

Clay F

I hope that Cassie reacts to The Sopranos.

Clay F

I have had that same sensation with a 2010s TV series he is in.

Ria Grix

So… I think what you’re trying to say is, The Last of Us is fictional?

Clarence Newman

It does highlight Abbie's side of the argument again - her side being that her Dad and the fireflies were just trying to find a cure for the entire human race and needed Ellie (just one person) in order to do that. She had a very good point, one which, given the nature of human emotion, I would readily admit before I emptied my gun into her.

Clarence Newman

Can I just say that watching this reaction has made the whole series worthwhile, and it's one of the huge reasons I keep coming here - it's not the tears and the emotion or the physical elements of Cassie's personality. It's the humanity within her, which somehow, time and again, manages to restore my faith that it still exists in the rest of us. You're really good at this, Cassie, you know that? You should do it for a living.

Shad Kanyak

I think we got blocked. I hope.🤞🏻

Cole Jennett

If it had been from Abbie’s point of view the entire time, Joel would have been the person she hated. It just shows how narrative is key, and their are two sides to everything. Joel didn’t deserved to be tortured to death, but killing him was justified from their standpoint. I’ve never felt Cassie’s ability to see both sides was as strong as her empathy.

Cole Jennett

Yes Clay, you made it obvious that you had chosen the side of the cure being a fools errand.

Clay F

Cole, seemed intuitive to me. Years into the apocalypse with no team of doctors or researchers, no real research facilities/equipment. I was thinking maybe the doctor was a family doctor (general practitioner), or maybe even some kind of research doctor, who had survived the initial onslaught of the apocalypse and wanted to experiment on Ellie while he killed her. I could see the doctor/fireflies justifying such if thought only a chance 1 in 100 or 1 in 1000. Thus, I was thinking during S1E9, a better approach than immediately killing Ellie would be to seek out researchers and additional doctors, research literature/materials, etc. to confirm/increase viability of the vaccine. Also, maybe determine a way to cultivate or synthesize the vaccine without killing Ellie. Those were my thoughts during S1E9. I had no idea the series wanted us to take a leap of faith as to a viable vaccine (counterintuitive) instead of the fireflies experimenting with at best a 1 in 1000 chance. In hindsight, I think S1 was unclear and leaving ambiguity to the viewer. If S1 was clear that the vaccine synthesis, efficacy, scale up, and distribution approached 10-20% possible, then the child Ellie should have been killed. During S1E9, I didn't even consider issues of scale up and distribution that Ria noted, which are good points. Yet, maybe that could have been worked out over the long term? Maybe not.

Cole Jennett

I don’t think that’s the case because I can still see the comment he made in the full episode.🤷‍♂️ Not sure what happened. Slept on it and realized he was in the wrong, who knows? I do admire self reflection, but not sure that’s the case this time, lol

Clay - in the cold opening of the Part II game, Joel was confiding to Tommy (there was no therapist). Joel, being your typical anti-vaxxer, said "maybe I am beginning to buy into this cure business or just do right by her" as his motive to continue to take her to the Fireflies. There were a thread in each of the two game that indicate cure is highly promising and even believe to be possible by the doctor/medical staff in this FICTIONAL world: Game 1: In the midst of Joel's hospital massacre, he came across a note and a recording from Marlene to Ellie's Mom, and one recording from the doctor/surgeon with bunch of medical jargons and extreme excitement saying "We are about to have the biggest break through since Penicillin" Game 2: the show's porch scene was combined from two scenes in the game. First is Ellie went back to the hospital in Salt Lake, and found x-rays, brain diagrams, mathematic equations and annotations with medical jargons about specific brain regions. There might be neck and arm diagrams too but I don't remember. Ellie's search ended with finding a recording from a medical / research staff about "... even there are more immune people, the only person who can produce a cure is dead" before Joel arrived at the hospital too and spilled the truth. The porch scene is about venting, and the "try to forgive" dialog. There is a very important flash back in the game discussion involving ethics, what ifs, and producing vaccine will kill Ellie." I assume it will be in Season 3 although with splitting of S2 and S3, the impact will not be as strong given viewers need to wait another 2-3 years. Overall I thought that the show writers left out a lot of these details might just give more mystery and doubts. But again, all these are just fiction and it's the choice of writers to add / remove supporting details. I'm guessing with the goal to "balance" the debate. But Neil D said many years ago (before the show), that for sure the cure can be made. The game details support that claim. The show?!?

Shad Kanyak

Chalk it up to a bad day. My point stands. 2 games. If they planned better, two seasons per game. The second game getting three seems odd.

Clay F

Tech -- that's interesting. As you indicate, those of us who know nothing about the game only had what was depicted in the series to go by. Plus, the series fiction is different than the game fiction. Doesn't make sense to construe the series based on the game but only on what is depicted in the series. Two different fiction realities. However, thanks for the comments, which help me understand how the show deviates from the source material. Based on what is depicted in the show through S1E9, seemed ridiculous to kill Ellie.

Cole Jennett

@Clay And that’s how 2 people with the same information can see things differently. I thought it was ridiculous to kill the doctor🤷‍♂️

Clarence Newman

Agreed, it's all about point of view. Which is why I would use my gun on her and not a golf club.

Clarence Newman

....on Abbie, not Cassie. The worst thing I'd do to Cassie is the tortilla slap challenge.

TechJJ

Clay - it just came to me there were hints sprinkled along in the show. In S1E7 during the camp fire before reaching Jackson, Joel told Ellie "Marlene is many things. (But) if she says they can do it, they can do it." It was referring to Ellie asking whether the Fireflies can make a vaccine. So in Joel's mind, in S1E9 when Marlene told Joel the Fireflies can make the cure and "give it to everyone", Joel would've believed it before moved on to "Find somebody else" and then the kill-all scene.

Maisie

…which is kind of ironic, if you think about it.
