Brent Petty

You know Billy Crystal from The Princess Bride (Miracle Max). Bruno Kirby was in Good Morning Vietnam (the lieutenant who thought he was funny).

Brian McGovern

I wonder if she recognises Jake Gyllenhall.

Brian Harris

You would love Forget Paris. That is a classic Cassie romcom.

Michael Gryphon

Just re-subscribed to the patreon so I could see this! This is one of my favorite movies.

Brian McGovern

The director of this had a pretty good run around this time. Tremors, City Slickers, heart and soul, then he did Pluto Nash. Now he seems to just television.

Old As Dirt Bert

Jack Palance (Curly) won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this film, and at age 72 did 1 arm push ups on the Oscar stage. He had fun having his career resurrected.

Wesley White

City Slickers is good, but personally for me, the second one is better, but that's just me! I'm glad you liked this one, and I hope you'll eventually watch/react to the second one in the future, I just feel like the second one has more laughing moments and believe it or not it was the only one I saw in the theater when I was a kid lol! Gosh I came so close to winning the Pick-A-Flick, I'm just not lucky enough I guess lol! Happy New Year Cass, love and support, and God bless y'all and the family🥰😇🙏🤗😉✌🌹

Phil Stubblefield

Thanks, Cassie, for starting off the new year with a bang! This is one of my favorite comedies! 😁

JohnnyUtah

We told you you'd love it! Now just listen to all out suggestions this year. Well, some of us 😅

Chris Thom

I saw this a freakish amount of times as a child for some reason. Maybe a good move to use the Indiana Jones font and colors and poster artist. Kids will go right to it like moths to a flame at the video store.

Brian McGovern

He was and she did. He was Billy,s son

Brent Petty

Some trivia from IMDB: The story that Billy Crystal tells about his "best day" of going to a Yankees game with his father is a true story from his childhood. He notes at one point that, "I still have the program." Not only does he really still have it, but he got Mickey Mantle to autograph it twice: once at the game that day and once again some 20 years later on a talk show they were both guests on. Another true story from Billy Crystal's life portrayed in the movie is the wake-up call from his mother on his birthday. According to the DVD commentary, his mother would call him on his birthday at around 5 o'clock in the morning (the time he was born) and verbally re-enact the event over the phone. The rendition in the film is word-for-word the true story of Billy Crystal's birth. Billy Crystal liked the horse he rode so much, he bought him. Jake Gyllenhaal's film debut. Billy Crystal's on-screen daughter was played by Billy's real-life daughter Lindsay Crystal. The cow-giving-birth used a puppet calf, as several takes were wanted. The shot of Norman getting to his feet was real footage taken just after birth. Billy Crystal actually assisted in the delivery. Six calves were used in all, and Crystal arranged for them all to live full lives on a farm. The shots featuring Crystal were filmed in Colorado, but the shots from the same scene featuring Jack Palance were filmed in New York. Bruno Kirby was extremely allergic to horses. Prior to each day of filming involving a horse, he required an injection of allergy medication to get through the day's shooting. Daniel Stern enjoyed the City Slickers experience so much that he later bought a 500-acre cattle ranch. Billy Crystal, a notoriously die-hard New York Yankees fan, wears a New York Mets cap in the film. As explained by Crystal in the DVD Commentary, he did this because the New York Mets had made a major contribution and helped out on his annual Comic Relief charity.

Brent Petty

I feel the opposite. The sequel, to me, is one of the worst films I've ever seen. But that's the great thing about PiB Patreon: we can agree to disagree.

Alex Gorell

A fun movie. Dont bother with the sequel it’s absolutely abysmal.

Chris Thom

Some of those Comic Relief sets would make for a fun reaction on the channel. Was Crystal a writer and producer on this movie?

Brent Petty

He was executive producer, and an uncredited writer per IMDB: Billy Crystal co-wrote the story, but is not given on-screen credit.

Heart and Souls? Haven't thought about that movie in a long time, but I remember enjoying and think Cassie would like it. First, it's a very good vehicle for a young Robert Downey Jr. But second, it's a very '90's movie' kind of feel-good comedy. Not sure how to put it into words, but I feel like what were mid budget pg-13 positive even wholesome movies starring B-listers and up and comers surrounded by top notch character actors ... Just kind of went away. Was it a post-9-11 thing? Was it a post internet hardening of audiences? Was it studios redirecting mid budgets to cgi action? Am I imagining things altogether?

keoma songs

If anyone wants to see some good Jack Palance westerns, while there may be some good American choices, I can recommend 2 Spaghetti Westerns with him. The Mercenary (1968) and Companeros (1970). While most would agree that The Mercenary is superior, and notably had some sequences copied by Tarantino, they're both worth watching. They are an odd companion piece. Not quite sequels or related or remakes of each other. But both are Zapata-style Spaghettis (meaning Mexico set revolutionaries), both directed by Sergio Corbucci. Both starring Franco Nero and Jack Palance. Nero plays Polish in one, Swedish in the other. The 2 movies are easy to confuse for each other, as Tony Musante and Tomas Milian play similar characters in similar functions. Probably the sincere difference is that Musante as typical plays things very straight and keeps the movie serious, while Milian as usual gives a winking, tongue in cheek light performance and as a consequence Companeros is perhaps less serious.

This is more than just a screwball comedy, it does have more heart. A bunch of familiar faces in this. Bruno Kirby was in "When Harry Met Sally" with Billy Crystal prior to the this. Kirby was also in "Good Morning Vietnam" with the ranch boss played by Noble Willingham, as two of the officers running the radio station. Jack Palance won a best supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal of "Curly". Between this and the buddy cop comments about "Tango and Cash" he has floating around my head the last little while. Also isn't the first time he has appeared on the channel, he was in one of the more infamous reactions on the channel in "Batman" (1989). Patricia Wettig was recognised and was looked up to be in "Prison Break", but I am sure she would be familiar to Cassie from "Alias" as well as "Brothers and Sisters". Glad that Cassie looked up to confirm that it was Jake Gyllanhaal, I was wondering if she would recognise him as a young lad. The baseball story that "Mitch" tells about his dad is very autobiographical for Crystal. He did a very successful one man show called "700 Sundays" about his relationship with his father, and that was how much time they spend together. It did typically involve going to Yankee games on Sundays. He lost his father suddenly relatively early in his life, and it did (and still might) bother him that his last conversation with him was an argument. They had the argument and his father went out to his regular bowling night and never came back, and Billy was not able to make amends. I took my father to see it as a gift, as it seemed a fittingway to spend my time with my father. Unfortunately, when I have talked to him about in the last several years he doesn't seem to remember seeing it... at least I remember enjoying that time with him and the show (it was fantastic).. Pretty sure I would have had a crush on Helen Slater as a much younger boy when I first saw this, and it may have been because I had seen her as "Supergirl" prior to seeing this.

Chris Thom

Woah I never made the Batman connection before. Seemed like different persons in those roles. Never realized this was an Oscar kind of movie. Even though my five year old self probably thought it deserved all of them. Heartbreaking about Billy's father. Had never heard that story.

Mojo One Thousand

It may well have been one of those lifetime Oscars, but this was also prior to egregious campaigning that would come about towards the end of the 90s and comedies could get nominations.

Just Plain Bob

A few random-ish thoughts. First, this was way better than I remembered and Cassie’s reaction was delightful. Second, Jack Palance was a national treasure and we need more of him (and his movies) on the channel (particularly noir classic “Sudden Fear” and western classic “Shane”). Third, I’ve ridden a horse exactly once in my life. It was on my honeymoon, to make my new bride happy, and lasted a grand total of two hours. They gave me the most docile horse they could find, I was still horrible at it and I could barely walk for a day afterwards. Finally, when I was still dating my (now) ex-wife, one of her uncle’s bulls got out of the fenced pasture where they kept their cattle. I was enlisted to help corral it, along with a half dozen other relatives (we were on foot). That made perfect sense, because one ton bulls find nothing more intimidating than a 5’8”, 160 lb. city boy with no experience with cattle. Anyway, we miraculously got him into the back of the cattle truck and I only think I blacked out from fear twice.

Chris Thom

I never knew much about his career. Going to look it up.

Chris Thom

Saw something pretty horrible on YouTube last year. This family from NZ was on their first week on a dude ranch, and a woman's horse (fellow vacationer) fell off the side of a hill and she cracked her skull very badly. The family had an amazing trip in the US, but that must've been pretty traumatizing to close the vacation with (after two more weeks on the ranch). Horse riding can be so much fun, but they probably shouldn't take beginners by any cliffs whatsoever.

Larry Darrell

Can’t wait to watch this tonight. City Slickers is more than just a generic comedy. This is a film I like to watch at least once a year. The “One Thing” and “Best Day” moments of the film, among many others just help you to remember what’s most important in your life, and remind you to give things a little course correction. What better time than the first week of the year. Also, another plug for a Billy Crystal film that is relevant at the moment. Billy Crystal’s first starring role in a major motion picture was actually a Buddy Cop action film, alongside the incredibly multi-talented, late-great Gregory Hines. Running Scared (1986) This is a very fun film starring 2 people who were actually great friends in real life and their chemistry on screen is a real joy to watch. I hope this film finds its way onto your short list. In the Buddy Cop/Action/Comedy world it’s one of the best and most underrated. Thank You.

Clarence Newman

Just finished watching this. My goodness, does Cassie have the most expressive face ever or what? With her little grins and gasps and nose-wrinkles when she's trying not to cry, she makes Jim Carrey in his prime look like Dan "The Man" Levitan from Good Morning Vietnam. OK, that might be an exaggeration, but you get my drift. Without even opening her mouth, she can make a good movie even better. And of course, now she's been properly introduced to prime time Billy Crystal, I just have 69 words to say: Running Scared next. Got to be Running Scared. Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines in a feel-good buddy cop movie when she said she wants a buddy cop WEEK in January. Treat yourself to Running Scared, Cassie. Like Spring follows Winter, Running Scared should always follow City Slickers. Bring the kids, lasso Carly in aswell and enjoy the underappreciated classic that is Running Scared. You will never thank us more.

Just Plain Bob

“Running Scared” is fine, but her introduction to Gregory Hines really should be “Wolfen.”

Dorsalfinsky

When I glance at image of the movie here, it looks like Alex from that Koobrick movie for children.

LukeG84

I never get tired of rewatching this movie. It's one of my all-time favourites. I'm so glad Cassie finally got to see it. I new she would enjoy it. Fingers crossed Cassie watches the sequel, City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994). 🤞🏻

Above Average Dave

100%. But for Cassie, that’s probably a “Scary but not too scary” selection.

Eric Parpart

Highly recommend the sequel. In my opinion funnier than the first.

Above Average Dave

Thanks for this, Cassie. btw, I've mentioned that I watch your reactions (full length, of course) while doing my Zone 2 cardio workouts. To be clear: I very much dislike cardio workouts, so watching your reactions has been how I've been luring myself into them for the last three years. Thanks to your assistance, I put in more than 450 miles (724.2 kilometers for the metrically inclined) on the Concept 2 erg rower in 2025. My average workout also went from 5 miles to 8 miles this year. I know this wouldn't have been possible without these "watch-along row-alongs," so, once again, from my heart, my lungs, my waist and my wife—THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! 😁😁😁

Blake Evans

Love this classic. I really miss old Billy Crystal. I also don’t think Daniel Stern (Phil) gets a lot of credit. The sequel is pretty good too, but this one is classic for me.

Knight Squirrel

As far as sequels go, City Slickers 2 is a great follow up.

Michael Lynch

I think calling this a western might be stretching it.

Johnny Bullis

Wow thanks for watching this ... I havent seen this since it came out on VHS.. one of my moms favorite movies. Im surprised you missed Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson's voice) she was the one Daniel Stern had the affair with. And the only woman that came on the adventure is Helen Slater.. she was the original Supergirl and was also in the 80s classic Legend of Billie Jean. Some other neat coincidences .. Kirby Smith who played Ed was in Good Morning Vietnam with Noble Willingham who played the owner of the ranch. Also, Billy Crystal was in a movie with David Paymer who played Ira ( the thin ice cream brother) in a movie called Mr. Saturday Night which came out a year after this was made. I highly recommend it, if you like Billy Crystal and 90s movies. And you're right.. this is a great movie to start off a new year.

Matt Mabry

HEELLLLOOO Norman, Hellloooo!!! i have seen this so many times, and of course, the two biggest take aways for me are a) the Curly (Jack Palance) and the one thing....Holding up that index finger and it always gives me a moment of pause to reflect what my one thing is and b) Hellloooooo

Ace Degenerate

Jack Kirby modeled Darkseid after Jack Palance. I always thought that was wild. And Gene Colan modeled Dracula after Jack for Marvel Comics interpretation of the vampire

Tyler Hale

Well wishes to Billy Crystal who was close to Rob Reiner. 🙏

Bryan Erickson

Glad you finally watched this one. Wish Carly could’ve joined, I think she would’ve enjoyed it, too. Hope you react to the 2nd one.

Brett Richey

These films are why I'm here. Take my money. Take it. Normaaaaan! Cassie, you are the only reactor I watch. I don't plan on needing any others. Thank you for being the one finger of reactors. I struck lucky.

Brett Richey

Carly would have said tender 39 times. She would have loved it.

Chris Thom

He seems really nice in real life. As a kid I wasn't so sure because I wasn't certain if criminals (Home Alone) could be evil AND funny in actuality. Very confusing.

OddThomas

Must see Helen Slater movie: Supergirl

Canadianant

I really enjoyed this one. Perfect for my day off There was alot more heart then I remembered in this one. In a weird way, it meant more now to me than it did seeing it back in the 90s. I was too young to relate to the middle age crisis aspects of it at the time, but now I'm older than them but still felt I could relate to them. I can certainly relate to the feeling depressed and directionless part of it. To have a direction or purpose in life must be a gift. The differences in men's conversations vs women's conversations are certainly true in my experience. I would often go out with my guy friends back in the day and I'd come home. My ex-wife would ask me did you talk about his relationship kids health etc and I'm like I'm like no. We talked about cars, TV shows, movies and electronics. Most men when they go out with other men want an escape from their normal life and talk about unimportant things, football, baseball etc. It is interesting though that there is a lot of more serious talk between the guys which makes sense for the movie. Certainly, but there's also no shortage of of baseball talk. Anyway glad you loved this one. I know there seems to be sort of a mixed option on the sequel even here in the comments. I can't add my two cents this time as I don't remember it to be honest.

Joe Cross

I mean how is it not a western?

Joe Cross

I've said for years this is the movie I want to see get a legacy sequel. I would love to see a movie that reunites Billy & Jake on a road trip or something (doesn't even have to be cowboys) reconnecting as an aging father and now middle-aged son

Michael Lynch

I’m not gonna say it doesn’t have elements. It’s just not the traditional western is all I’m saying.

Clarence Newman

Bit of psychoanalysis here. When Mitch and his wife are snogging each other's face off at the airport, Cassie starts to smile but then wrinkles her nose in what looks like a bit of disapproval. She's such a Mom. You know she was thinking at that moment, "Not in front of the kids!"

Clarence Newman

I've always associated the word "Western" with the Wild West of the 1800s. This is more "City folk visit Colorado". Doesn't matter, of course. It's a great film either way.

Stick Figure Studios

He was also the host of RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT for a while.

Stick Figure Studios

And the following year Billy Crystal rode onto stage atop a giant Oscar that was being pulled by Jack Palance.

Blake Evans

Highly recommend you check out Bushwhached (1995). Sweet, stupid, funny, and heartwarming, but you can see that Daniel Stern could carry a film on his own.

Michael West

Love this movie and a great way to start the year. It’s lighthearted and funny but has some great messages. Jack Palance is a movie treasure. Also, the tumbleweeds song was popular in many of the old black and white “singing” westerns of the 40’s and 50’s. Great reaction as always.

Bryan Erickson

“Hi Curly. Kill anyone today?…Day ain’t over yet.” To this day my father and I will use “day ain’t over yet” in conversation with each other.

Bryan Erickson

Another movie with a rock star cast.

Cole Jennett

Or better yet, The Secret of my Success with Michael J. Fox

Tara ✨💫

Cassie, you also know Billy Crystal from The Princess Bride. He played Miracle Max with a lot of makeup on. He saved Westley with the miracle pill "Have fun storming the castle!"

K, Zachary

So there is so much I can relate to in this movie. This was still is one of my Dad's favorites. Turns out we're in Colorado right now., Vail Village to be exact. We are heading to Utah in the morning to stay ahead of the weather. One of my friends, myself, my gf and 4 of her former sorority sisters, my cousin and his daughter. Skiing 🙄 🎿 🙏 I can relate to this movie because baseball my friends and I are like these guys were baseball encyclopedias. We communicate through baseball and cars. I once rode for 16 hours on horse for three days in Yellowstone in 2009. I went up were the public didn't get to go. That's where they think I did permanent nerve damage.

JohnnyUtah

I know you don't take requests but I'm telling you, you'd love The Scret of my Success. Seeing Helen Slater in this just makes me want you to see it more!

Brian's Dog

Had a blast watching this, really brought back the memories.

Chris Thom

That's a Michael J. Fox movie? From the 80's?

Chris Thom

There was a Supergirl movie? As in DC Supergirl?

Chris Thom

Anyone know where it was filmed? Was it actually Colorado?

Chris Thom

Think I got that one mixed up with Bright Lights, Big City for a long time. Haven't seen that yet.

Chris Thom

Sounds like Pluto Nash really hurt some careers. From what I can remember.

Chris Thom

Oh wow. Had no idea he was a child actor. Thought Donnie Darko was his first movie.

YodatheHobbit

In 1992 I had the opportunity to watch this with my mom and a girl my mom was babysitting with her home daycare service when I was seven. The girl was nine and she was a tomboy and I had a puppy love friendship with her though of course I didn't realize that at the time. I still regret not saying yes when my mom asked if I wanted to watch it with them when it premiered during an HBO free preview weekend.

YodatheHobbit

It is, although it wasn't considered so at the time. When I saw it when I was 12, I disagreed heavily. "The map is ON FIRE!" really made me laugh for some reason.

Larry Darrell

I’ve thought that too. Jake Gyllenhaal returning as his son and they both go West on a trip. His son being middle aged now and going through some of the same things. They’d be more like Bill and Phil from the first, and it’d be a great Father Son film. This needs to happen.

Clay F

No. 164 at popcorn requests. Not bad. An outside chance to make it into a poll if she randomly selects, for example, from the top 200 or top 250.

YodatheHobbit

That's pretty cool. Someone was giving away an old treadmill in their driveway for free recently so I snatched it. I've never owned one before, kind of have always hoped to have one to be able to walk great distance on cold days, and without having to go up hills, and I've just started watching reactions in my living room while powerwalking.

keoma songs

Ahhh, Wolfen! Strange movie, I found it unsatisfying, but later found out about the studio interference and that made total sense. Maybe it plays better nowadays. What was in the ether of the early 80s that made wolf, werewolf, and general lycanthropes or humanoid animals into such a big part of pop culture? Real wolf movies like Never Cry Wolf. Curios like Wolfen. Others like American Werewolf in London. The Howling. Teen Wolf. Silver Bullet. Cat People, The Company of Wolves, Full Moon High ...

Larry Darrell

“One Thing… just One Thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean Shit.” Great reminder to keep Life Simple. “Life is short. Break the rules. Forgive quickly. Kiss slowly. Love Truly. Laugh uncontrollably. Never regret anything that makes you smile.” — Mark Twain I needed to see this film at the moment. Thank You. One of my favorite stories Billy Crystal tells of making this movie… Billy Crystal was born and raised in New York. A true City Slicker. Before this film, Crystal had no real experience riding a horse, but when he got on, he found that it was natural to him. The technical advisor, Jerry Gatlin (stuntman from many, many of the greatest classic westerns) who was teaching everyone to ride, told Crystal off-hand, that he must have been a cowboy in his past life, because he was so natural at riding and roping. (The director Ron Underwood even comments how “freakishly” natural Crystal was.) After Gatlin made that comment to him, Crystal immediately remembered an experience he had very early on in his career, when he first moved out to California. He and his wife were driving around Joshua Tree National Park, and he had the craziest Deja Vu ever. He felt like he had been there before and that he had been a cowboy. Crystal even comments that he had to pull the car over because the sensation was so strong and that for about 2 or 3 days he felt an out of body feeling. Really cool story. Here is Billy Crystal telling the story in more detail. https://youtu.be/DPpjxApjxsA?si=Ln5ZRUVhJbG8LM5D

Although my situation wasn't similar to Phil's, I can relate to his breakdown. When I was around 28 I had dropped out of college, every career path I started down failed and my first marriage fell apart. When Phil finally loses it in the tent...well, that's really what it looks like. That scene makes me tear up every time because it feels so real. It took me awhile to find my footing, but I've been married for almost 30 years, have two wonderful sons, three beautiful grandkids and am a couple of years from retirement. Even went back to college and finished my degree. Sometimes you can't see it at the time, but even when you're at your lowest your life can really be a "do over".

JPDotCom23

Legendary Jack Palance, who played Curly, got his breakthru role as a hired gunman Jack Wilson in the 1953 classic 'Shane'. He was also in 1988's 'Young Guns' and as Carl Grissolm in Tim Burton's 'Batman' in 1989, and opposite Sylvester and Kurt Russell in 'Tango & Cash'. Bruno Kirby, who played Ed in this, got his big break in the 1974 classic 'The Godfather, Part II', as the young Peter Clemenza. He also appeared in 'When Harry met Sally', 'Good Morning Vietnam', 'The Freshman' with Marlon Brando and 'Donnie Brasco' opposite Al Pacino. Writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who wrote for the 70's tv show 'Happy Days', got their big break writing Ron Howard's directing debut 'Night Shift', then in Tom Hanks big break, also a Ron Howard movie 'Splash'. They also wrote 'Parenthood' and 'A League of their Own' among others. This was also Danielle Harris' first movie, she was one of the children in the classroom scene.

Clay F

I thought Jack Palance was good. An abrupt end halfway through the movie. When I was a kid, I helped my dad (a veterinarian) deliver calves a couple of times. Stick hand up in there. Used small chains. Wild seeing Jake Gyllenhaal (age 10) so young. You nailed that was Jake G. I partially watched this movie shortly after release when I was about 29 -- didn't finish -- but I had more appreciation this watch 30+ years later. Yet, was not as big a turn around as my experience with Twins a few weeks ago in which I had low expectations (thinking Twins not my kind of humor) but ended up liking Twins. Nice when that happens.

Clay F

I did my first full watch of Shane 4 months ago. The name "Shane" is stated about 106 times in the movie. That kid asking question after question -- dragging out his voice each time. "Ppaaaaa?" "Shhaaane?" The kid did a good job gnawing on that candy cane. Was somewhat surprised when I learned the kid was nominated for an Oscar. I watched Night Shift shortly after release -- thought hilarious.

JPDotCom23

Supporting actors were slim pickins then, lol

Clarence Newman

The kid, Brandon de Wilde, had a better role in Hud (1963) - an underappreciated Paul Newman classic. Newman would bump Chris Hemsworth to number 2 on her list if she ever saw him in that one.

Above Average Dave

Thanks! That’s so great about the treadmill, YodatheHobbit! It does add up. I had a boss who had a walking treadmill under his standing desk and claimed he got more than 25 miles a week doing that! In addition to the rower, I mountain bike, as well as a once a week Zone 5 torture session (90% of maximum heart rate for 25 mins) training on an eliptical. That one requires copious amounts of Metallica, Social Distortion and AC/DC. But the rower with PIB has become a go to for the longer workouts, and especially great when I can’t get outside because of weather, work and other responsibilities. In all I'm logging about 20 miles a week. The watchalongs with Cassie and Carly have increased my milage in the last several years and made those longer cardio workouts fly by!

Dan

Running scared is the best and original buddy cop movie. And if you want a good introduction to Gregory Hines, it’s gotta be Tap.

Larry Darrell

Billy Crystal came up with the concept for the film, and worked with the writers as they wrote it.

Milton Reduxed

You recognised everyone except Lisa Simpson

Just Plain Bob

I doubt it, Clarence. He’s fairly despicable in that movie. But he is gorgeous. His character is marginally more sympathetic in “Horseman, Pass By”, the fantastic novel the movie is based on. Larry McMurtry, the author, also wrote “The Last Picture Show”, “Lonesome Dove” and “Terms of Endearment.” Truly one of the great novelists of the 20th century.

Chris Thom

Yeah she didn't notice her in As Good as it Gets either. I don't know if she's a Simpsons fan.

Clarence Newman

Fun fact: Billy Crystal's original choice for Curly was Charles Bronson. Bronson was interested so Billy sent him a script. A couple of days later, he got a call from Bronson: "F you." "Excuse me?" said Billy. "F you," repeated Bronson. "I'm dead on page 68." Billy tried to explain the reasons and context, but Bronson was livid. He told Billy to go screw himself and hung up. Jack Palance stepped in and won the Oscar. Nice going, Chuck.

Larry Darrell

Now she needs to see The Legend of Billie Jean (1985) with Helen Slater & Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson)

Clarence Newman

New Mexico and Colorado according to the Pedia of Wiki.

mitchhamilton64

i know people will get the wrong idea about bronson from this little tidbit but he was a solid man. kurt russell, when he was doing a television series with bronson, he had heard it was charles birthday. so being a young 12 year old, he thought he'd give charles a birthday gift and gave him a remote controlled airplane. charles got the gift, didnt say anything before looking at the ground and walking away. people around him told him "ah, dont worry about it kid, thats just charlie" and soon after the assistan director told kurt that charlie wanted to see him in his room. and kurt goes, knocks, goes in and charles without looking says "no one had really given me a birthday present before. thanks" fast forward later, it was kurts birthday and charles had given kurt a skateboard, a matching skateboard with his own. and kurt was skating on his own one day when one of the security guards told him to stop. later charles noticed kurt wasnt skating anymore and asked how come. kurt told him what had happened and charles goes "come with me." they walk for a bit until they go to the head of the studios office, walk past the secretary, doesnt even acknowledge her, charles walks straight in and simply says "hey, we're gonna be skating in the studio." and then walked out. kurt was never bothered about skating again.

Clarence Newman

Great story, Mitch. There's always different sides. I know Charlie was a great husband to Jill Ireland too, not to mention one of the great actors of the 1960s and 70s. Would love to have seen him as Curly.

Gray

I wonder did she even watch The Simpsons growing up, maybe she'll have to watch the show albeit many years from now.

Gray

I really enjoyed this, I'd never heard of the film before it won the poll. This is why I like going with the flow of the channel as i'm always getting to watch gems like this that i'd probably never watch on my own.

John A

Such a great movie. loved it the first time I saw and still do.

Clarence Newman

I am thinking, Bob, that his very despicableness - coupled with the fact that he looks like a freakin god in that film - will tie Cassie in knots.

Stacey

Please watch the sequel ❤️

Clay F

I see comments below to avoid the sequel [RT 12%]: Alex = "Dont bother with the sequel it’s absolutely abysmal." Stick = "Yeah, it's pretty bad." For more Billy Crystal, consider Hamlet (1996), Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind (2018), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), and 61* (2001) (director).

Brent Petty

I always wondered why Ed didn't get Phil a job managing his sporting goods store. Box retail is box retail, after all.

Brent Petty

The sequel is just a blatant money grab. It's horrid. One of the worst sequels ever made - check that - just one of the worst movies ever made, sequel or not.

Brent Petty

Agreed. I very much doubt she watched The Simpsons growing up.

It was missing two very important things: Bruno Kirby (though I understand why he'd be reluctant to be around horses again), and a script that is even a tenth as well-written as the first one. The sequel is just boring slapstick for the most part.

A little tidbit for you, Cassie: The credited writers for City Slickers also wrote "Parenthood," which you have reacted to.

Danielle Harris' first film was Halloween 4 in 1988

I feel like a lot of younger men could benefit from watching this movie. It asks some really interesting questions about what masculinity is and needs, and offers much better answers than most media aimed at men.

Oh, somehow I thought her appearence in this movie came first

The last paragraph from Roger Ebert's 1991 review of City Slickers: “City Slickers” is like “Parenthood” in the way it deals with everyday issues of living in an unforced way that doesn’t get in the way of the humor, and yet sets the movie up for a genuine emotional payoff at the end. And the male bonding among Crystal, Stern and Kirby is unforced and convincing. There are so many ways this movie could have gone wrong – with gratuitous action scenes, forced dialogue or contrived showdowns – that it’s sort of astonishing, how many ways it finds to go right.

Roger Ebert was not as kind to City Slickers II giving it only a 2/4 rating.

Brent Petty

Two more than it deserved, IMO.

I forgot how good this movie was. I haven't seen it since it first came out. It was good to revisit it. But Cassie, you disappointed me. Multiple times you almost cried but you never did. Great reaction, Cassie.
