I really liked this one so much! I would watch them in anything together again! I came around in the end and figured out Shane Black also did some of my favs Lethal Weapons and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and it all made sense!

Shane Black does it again!

Ike

First time watch for me. Can’t wait.

Knight Squirrel

Yes! Another banger from Shane Black. I, too, wish these guys had a sequel but I'm afraid it might ruin the magic.

Godzilla Jones

An underrated gem. I love this movie.

Chris Jarrett

Never before have I clicked a notifcation quicker. This movie is my first movie that I wondered 'how in the world is this not already a rewatchables?'. Looking forward to this rewatch!

Old As Dirt Bert

it'll just have to wait until football is over tomorrow. Maybe PIB will hit 500K on YouTube by then.

Simmeland

The Long Kiss Goodnight should be a no-brainer if you want to continue on the Shane Black road.

Night King01

Shame we’ll never get a sequel. Shane black said if he could he would literally make these for the rest of his life. Instead they decided to release this film the same week as captain america civil war and it bombed

Night King01

Also fun cameo. Robert downey jr plays sid shattuck, the corpse they find beside the tree at the mansion.

JL_83

Angourie Rice is Betty Brant in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies 😊

Kevin Farrell

What a shame. They had such great chemistry. That would've been a fun series.

MattN

I remember I was excited when this was coming out bc I love Shane Black. Russell Crow, and 70s detective movies. I assumed Russell Crow would have been the star here too. At the time, I hadn't seen many Ryan Gosling movies, if fact, just Drive. I knew he had done romantic movies but only saw Drive, and while Drive is an amazing movie with great acting, it may have just been one of those roles he's good at. Tbh I just figured he was popular because he's handsome! But, for me, Ryan stole the show and afterwards I needed to see more and more Gosling. This started my love of him and I pretty much like everything he's in! I'm really sad they didn't do more with them as a team. I really love this movie a lot

Grégory Gautier

I love this movie! I'm disappointed they never made a sequel. :/

Thanks for watching this one, Cassie! I've been submitting it as my Pick-A-Flick choice for a while, but I gladly settled for runner-up in the Buddy Cop movie poll. This is my favourite buddy cop movie since Hot Fuzz, and Shane Black's best written-and-directed film. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling were so amazing together, it's a shame they never did a sequel, or worked together again (as far as I know). Angourie Rice, who played the daughter, was also amazing! Her character was the perfectly balanced combination of precocious independence, youthful determination, endearing sassiness, and plausible competency. She wasn't a Mary Sue, she was a loving supportive daughter doing what she could to help her bumbling father. She kinda reminded me of Penny from the Inspector Gadget cartoons. One of my favourite aspects of the movie is the 1970s Los Angeles setting -- which is unusual for me because normally I have nothing but contempt for the '70s and am indifferent to L.A. But it factored perfectly into the story; the movie would've lost a lot of its charm and atmosphere if it had taken place in another time or place. Now that Cassie has watched "The Nice Guys," I'll be changing my Pick-A-Flick choice to "Bullet Train" (2022), which is another crime action-comedy, starring Brad Pitt and an incredible ensemble cast. The characters Lemon and Tangerine have similar chemistry and banter as March and Healy. I'm confident Cassie will really enjoy it... but the odds of winning PaF are slim, so I'm hoping there will be an Action-Comedy movie poll, sooner or later, and it'll win.

Sonny

Great movie

Milton Reduxed

I know that unlike many of us Cassie has a life offline but can I just say how welcome it is to get movie reactions on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, rather than being delayed till Monday & Tuesday

Stick Figure Studios

I love this film. Laughed so hard at it. Sadly, it didn't do well at the box office. I am so bummed that we never got a sequel. Glad you enjoyed it though. Figured you would.

Mark D

Rim SHOT! Rim SHOT,

Walter

This and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang make a perfect double feature. These guys are absolutely hilarious together. I wish they made 3 sequels.

Clay F

I liked it. Funny w/action, intrigue, tense moments. Gosling and Crowe were great. Shane Black delivered. I liked young Australian actress who played Holly. Amelia getting killed = sad. The actress who played Amelia was teen in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood who initially hit on the older Brad Pitt and lived at the ranch. Keith David (the black “Older Guy” they fought with a couple of times) will always be ‘King’ 30 years earlier to me in Platoon (1986) [King: “Everybody know the poor always being f***ed over by the rich. Always have, always will.”]. Thanks for cranking out the content, especially with you being sick. I like the retro aesthetic (late 70s LA), which that and other aspects vaguely reminded me of Boogie Nights. Boogie Nights (1997) [P. T. Anderson] = Mark Wahlberg (26 playing character 17+), Burt Reynolds (nom Oscar losing to Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting), Julianne Moore (37), John C Reilly (32), Don Cheadle (32-33), Philip Seymour Hoffman (30).

Matt

😊

Matt

Gosling is so hilarious in this, I've always thought he would be perfect for a Inspector Cloudeau in a Pink Panther remake, he has a sort of Peter Sellers vibe

aarswft

You should look up some of the promotional bits they did for this movie. This is such an underrated comedy duo.

Milton Reduxed

For that 70s vibe put BOOGIE NIGHTS (1997) on the shortlist, starring Dirk Diggler

Mojo One Thousand

"Holly" instantly reminded me of "Penny" from "Inspector Gadget" as well, with the father/daughter dynamic. And, "Gadget" is a riff on "Get Smart", however the relationship begins as collegial between "Max" and "99".

Mojo One Thousand

Apparently everybody wanted to, they just couldn't get it off the ground l.

Just Plain Bob

I love this film and thought Cassie’s reaction was delightful. Shane Black is one of those filmmakers that Hollywood should reward more. His scripts are smart and funny and his direction is spot on. He’s obviously strongly influenced by the work of noir/detective authors Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and the second tier pulp fiction authors that followed them (of which I’m also a HUGE fan). Authors such as Charles Willeford, Cornell Woolrich (wrote the short story that was the basis for Rear Window), David Goodis, Fredric Brown, Brett Halliday (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was loosely based on one of his Mike Shayne novels), etc. His most recent movie, Play Dirty, is based on the Parker novels by Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake, another noir/detective fiction legend). Sadly, it’s inferior to his other work and I strongly suspect studio interference. To be fair, no one’s really captured the essence of the Parker novels (I’d say the closest was Point Blank starring Lee Marvin). Finally, I was surprised that Cassie didn’t recognize Kim Bassinger from L.A. Confidential, in which she played Lynn Bracken, prostitute and love interest of Russell Crowe’s character, Bud White. Given that L.A. Confidential was based on the novel of the same name, written by modern noir/pulp fiction master James Ellroy, it seems a virtual certainty that Black cast Bassinger, at least in part, because of her affiliation with Crowe in that film.

The Guy Movie Poll • The New Guy (2002) • The Tall Guy (1989) • The Fall Guy (2024) • The Other Guys (2010) • The Cable Guy (1996) • A Guy Named Joe (1943) • Mr. Nice Guy (1997) • How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (2003) • Two Girls and a Guy (1997)

Mojo One Thousand

I had a fair suspicion I would like this movie as I have been a fan of Shane Black since I was a kid with the "Lethal Weapon" movies and "The Last Boy Scout", which he wrote. Especially with "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" also on the books, I instantly loved when it first came out, and find it very rewatchable. For me, this rounds out Black's pseudo-trilogy, more anthology, of PI-buddy movies, with "The Last Boy Scout" starting it, followed by "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", and then "The Nice Guys". With "The Last Boy Scout" feeling different because it was directed by the late Tony Scott rather than Black. Crowe and Gosling have great chemistry in this. I know that when Gosling was announced as "Ken" in the "Barbie" movie, some folks weren't convinced he could do comedy... and I immediately thought, these people haven't seen "The Nice Guys". With a great thing they do in this being they aren't mugging or necessarily going for the laugh. Angourie Rice is great in this. It was the first thing I saw her in, as the Tom Holland "Spiderman" movies came later. After I first saw this I was surprised to find out she's a great little Aussie actress, and thought she could go pretty far. Also, seems I am not the only one who thought this, but her character "Holly" reminded me of "Penny" from "Inspector Gadget" with a similar father/daughter dynamic, albeit less drunkenness. And, just to note that "Gadget" itself is based on "Get Smart", where "Agent 99" fills that role without the father/daughter dynamic. "Amelia" is played by Margaret Qualley, Andie McDowell's daughter. I still hold out hope that a sequel can be made at some point, apparently they all wanted to do it, and still might if the opportunity presents itself. A piece of trivia, when "Healy" lands a three punch combo on Keith David's character, when they are brawling by the hot tub, it is the same combo "Maximus" uses in his final confrontation with "Commodus" in "Gladiator".

Mojo One Thousand

"Amelia" is played by Margaret Qualley, Andie McDowell daughter.

Steve Mercier

A perfectly silly movie mostly held together by the fantastic chemistry of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. This movie is just a good time. Shane Black has become something of a master of zigging when you think he's going to zag, even if it doesn't all make sense. Good stuff.

K, Zachary

Russell Crowe was a fantastic movie with Denzel Washington called American Gangster (2007)) that was based on a true story.

Gray

I knew you'd like it, like others have said it's sad it didn't do better at the box office and we didn't get any more sequels as Ryan & Russell were great. I've gotten pretty lucky through PaF as i've had The Nice Guys as my pick ever since my original pick of Cold Mountain was won by someone else. Here's to hoping i'm lucky thrice!.

Gray

It's a great film with a stacked cast

Gray

Thier appearance together on The Graham Norton show is worth a watch for thier reactions to Greg Davies of Taskmasters fame numerous stories

Above Average Dave

I thought this was a kind of lighter (i.e. no theme of self-deletion) Lethal Weapon for the '00s, and was sure you would love. Ryan Gosling absolutely embraced his semi-doofus/not thinking ahead character, and Russell Crowe loves playing tough guys. We saw this when it hit the theaters and loved it then. The whole crowd was cracking up at all the right spots. 'Hope you, Ben and the little ones are all feeling better!

Shad Kanyak

In several interviews, when Russell Crowe has been asked if he'd ever do a sequel to any of his movies, he says only one, The Nice Guys. I wish that would happen, but this movie bombed when it came out.

Larry Darrell

I heard someone say recently, that January is the Monday of Months. That hilariously makes so much sense. :-)

John A

The Predator however was TERRIBLE. Of all the scripts of his to flop it's a shame it had to be a Predator movie

Nick Hewett

Double yes to The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight, both excellent.

Just Plain Bob

Yes, it was awful. Two things in his defense. First, I haven’t liked a Predator movie since Danny Glover and Bill Paxton squared off against Predator 2 (I know there’s lots of love for Prey, but it bored the hell out of me). Second, I suspect studio interference on The Predator. It’s got that mixed up feel to it, like it can’t decide what direction to go in. That said, I do feel his skills are best applied to the noir-with-a-twist genre. He clearly loves his buddy cop/crime solving/noir comedies and he has written some of the best.

Larry Darrell

You absolutely must watch The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996). Definitely before next Christmas. Gonna be really hard to wait that long. If we’re looking for an excuse, other than to see one of the best 90s Action Buddy films written by Shane Black, then I’ve got one. Mother’s Day. The Long Kiss Goodnight would be a PERFECT film for Mother’s Day… if you don’t watch it sooner. ;-) The Nice Guys is one of the best movies of the 2010s, definitely one of the best of the past 10 years. Shane Black should totally do a sequel. This could be a new Lethal Weapon type franchise. He does the “Buddy” stuff so well. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling were perfect. We need more films like this being made.

Uncle Phoenix

I hope someone PIF’s “Showdown in Little Tokyo” (1991). I think Cassie would love Brandon Lee and Dolph Lundgren.

Larry Darrell

+1 for Point Blank (1967). Hopefully Cassie gets to see this before the later lesser version, Payback (1999).

Larry Darrell

+ 1 for A Guy Named Joe (1943) :-) Irene Dunne… Gumption ;-)

Christian Becker

Watching movies with Cassie gets more and more expensive ;-) Four streaming services seemingly are not enough (German Sky includes Paramount+, Amazon Prime, and Netflix), and now many of the films are on Apple TV+, if you can find them in Europe at all. I'm sorely tempted to "hoist the colours" and let the "Jolly Roger" fly. I know I complain about it every other movie as it seems, but it IS rather annoying.

Schmidty

This is low key a BANGER!

Rick Williams

That was a fun movie. I loved it to. I would like to see more of the nice guys in a couple more movies. Great reaction, Cassie. The Last Bot Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight are movies you need to react to.

Night King01

Petition for Cassie to react to all three Police Story films by Jackie Chan. Some of the best action comedies ever made. Also in their original dubs with subtitles. Not english and cut down.

Gray

Easier to watch it on Canadian Netflix if you have a VPN that's what I did (still paying for the service so all good) plus saves getting out the DVD.

Cole Jennett

I went and got a library membership. Has helped tons. Forced to watch DVD quality, but otherwise saved me a lot of rental fees.

Brian McGovern

This made me realise it was second time they made a movie together, only the roles are reversed. Virtuosity was RC's third Hollywood feature.

Clay F

Bob -- I love Prey. Like Prey better then Predator 2, which wouldn't bother me if she never reacted to Predator 2.

Clay F

The Nice Guys is not on US Netflix. Unless I missed it, The Nice Guys is not available on any major service in the US to stream for free if you are a subscriber. But you can rent or buy on Amazon Prime. That's what I did. My standard procedure for each movie I am watching a reaction to is to check if available on one or more of the several platforms I am a subscribed. If not, I rent or buy on Amazon Prime. I am not rich, but renting 3 or 4 movies per month on Amazon Prime is less than $20. But I could see that being an issue if you have low or fixed income.

Matt

Yes please

Matt

Lars and the Real Girl 2007 for another underrated Ryan Gosling comedy

Jacob King

The other great Shane Black movie (script only) is The Long Kiss Goodnight. Absolute peak 90s action movie from the director of Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2.

John A

I could have sworn I'd seen this and just assumed it wasn't good enough to remember. Glad I decided to watch this full reaction because I definitely haven't and it was pretty good, I even assume it'll be your favorite of the buddy cop week

John A

Sail the seas with the rest of us 🏴‍☠️

OddThomas

Absolutely. Love The Long Kiss Goodnight

Milton Reduxed

I fear this kind of degenerate content may corrupt Cassie; Pretty soon she's going to be ending sentences, '...and stuff'

Clarence Newman

Steady on, John. She hasn't seen Midnight Run yet.

Tyler Hale

Does she recognize Shane from Predator?

Stick Figure Studios

Exactly, Clarence. I love both films, but MIDNIGHT RUN is one of my favorites.

Jacob King

Cable Guy is underrated. If it had come out after Jim Carrey had started doing serious movies it’s be considered a classic.

Milton Reduxed

Day 2 of repeatedly checking patreon for Midnight Run

Clay F

MLK: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law in 1983, creating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day) as a U.S. federal holiday, after broad Congressional approval. The holiday, first celebrated in 1986. MLK Day, in remembrance: "We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now because I've been to the mountaintop... I've looked over and I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land." --Martin Luther King, Jr. in speech to an overflowing crowd in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968, less than 24 hours before his assassination.

K, Zachary

So that was not Emma Roberts it was Margaret Qualley she played one of the Manson girls in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Did you know Ryan Gosling got his start in a Canadian TV show called Avonlea from the same people who did Anne Of Green Gables. My gf is addicted to that show. Anyway it's off to GOT tomorrow night. Indiana has got this.

Clay F

Congrats to Indiana.

LukeG84

First time watching this movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though for some reason the opening credits were much longer on Prime than wherever Cassie watched this, so it took a little effort to get in sync. Would gladly watch this one again as I think I missed a few gags throughout.

bknsty14

Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds

Andres Gaytan

I'm Sure Someone has said this already but Just in case. The Corpse of Syd Shattuck was played by Robert Downey Jr.

JAKH

"Play Dirty" (2025) starring mark Wahlberg is based on author Richard Stark's "Parker" series of novels. It is a sequel to: "Payback" (1999) starring Mel Gibson and "Parker" (2013) starring Jason Statham so Cassie should watch those before getting to "Play Dirty"
