What a quirky little thing that was! It reminded me a bit of Four Weddings and a Funeral and While you were Sleeping. I was impressed by Cher and Nicolas Cage becomes more mysterious in every role I watch him in, because who is he actually like in real life? The more I have thought about this movie-I do have some ideas for changes I would make haha but overall just what I needed..

What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAP! 👋💥 My 2nd favorite on screen movie slap. 😄

Christian Becker

Not the biggest fan of Cher personally. I like some of her songs well enough, but it isn’t usually my preferred kind of music. The movies I saw her in, on the other hand, are all pretty nice. Moonstruck, Mermaids, and The Witches of Eastwick. Looking forward to the reaction.

Meanwhile, in Space....

I've put this in the monthly drawing a few times, but the screenwriter for Moonstruck (John Patrick Shanley) went on to write and direct the first Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie, Joe Versus the Volcano, which is an underrated masterpiece in my opinion.

WestBound

How did Your Name not get on that poll! It was most requested pick/month last month and highest rated request and also the most requested on your website . Why are we avoiding it ? It's NOT STUDIO GHIBLI

Lennart Wollmershäuser

Well the next Jewison movie should definitely be Only You then. I mean: romantic comedy, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., scenic places in Italy.... It is almost TOO perfect for this channel. The only problem is it's more of an Italian gelato than a Popcorn movie, but then again....is it really a problem?

Old As Dirt Bert

Looking forward to your reaction as tonight's dinner "theater".

Gray

Yeah this one wasn't for me and I'm normally a fan of these quirky films, I guess Nicholas Cage does just play unhinged characters in every film.

Milton Reduxed

I feel watching cartoons is one step away from becoming a DIsney Adult

Milton Reduxed

Speaking of slaps we need to get Airplane II on the schedule

Steve Mercier

Loooooooooooooooove this movie...

Clay F

Cher seems like a good person based on her actions.

Clay F

I liked it. Cher is sensational (and pretty) in the movie. "I'm here to meet the family" was funny. You got a laugh out of it. Turned out to be ok. I was thinking I had watched this movie before and didn't remember it. But now I believe this was my first watch --my first full watch.

Christian Becker

Cher is for me in the same category as Barbra Streisand. Both are great personalities, singers, and actresses, but they were not in my sphere of interest while I was growing up. The first time I really noticed Cher was her video for "If I Could Turn Back Time" (1989) – I was 14 at the time – if you know, you know ;-)

Clay F

I know what you are saying. I was like that too about Barbara Streisand and Cher growing up. I am older than you. As a kid, we watched the weekly Sonny and Cher show [Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour - 4 seasons] as it aired in the early 1970's. Was not a big fan of that or her music. But she can be charismatic, and a dynamic performer.

Christian Becker

While we’re on the topic of great singers and actresses: Marilyn Monroe. I think "River of No Return" (1954) might be a movie for Cassie. That one has a special place in my heart because it was the very first movie I ever taped on VHS. It also helps that it is a good movie.

Dan M

I’m in the mood for quirky tonight. I actually like Cher better as an actress than as a singer (although, I can listen to I Got You Babe with Sonny on repeat several times). This is my second favorite Cher movie…her performance in Mask is great, and garnered her several award nominations and wins.

MikeLL

During their first meeting when Cage starts ravishing Cher, Cassie said "I did not see that coming". I said to the screen: "It's the Moon, Cassie, it's the Moon!" Great movie and fantastic reaction.

Miss Lee

ahhhhhhh one of my FAVES!!!

Mojo One Thousand

Cher has been a fixture in the entertainment industry for more than 60 years, mainly in music, but also across TV and movies. Cher won a best actress oscar for this, and pretty sure wore quite the outfit to the Oscars that raised some eyebrows at one point (not sure if it was when she won or a different occasion). Olympia Dukakis ("Steel Magnolias" and "Mr Holland's Opus") also won an Oscar for her performance in this. John Mahoney was the familar man, always getting water tossed in his face, and is most known as "Fraser's" father, but he was also in "The American President" on the channel and Cassie would also know him from "Dan in real life", Every time I see Danny Aiello I think of "Hudson Hawk" and a "so bad its good" poll. But I think the channel last saw him in "Leon". "Cosmo's" mistress is played by Anita Gillette. She is familar to me at the moment as I have been seeing a lot of "30 Rock" and she plays Tina Fey's mother in the show.

JL_83

Carly actually mentioned this movie when y’all were reacting to another Nicolas Cage movie: It Could Happen to You, though she wasn’t 100% sure of the title as I recall

MikeLL

You reminded me that my Picked Flick is another Norman Jewison movie The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. So it could be that one!

Popcorn In Bed

i didn’t realize it was a romance! missed opportunity!

David Blount

I love Cher in this and Mask. And Witches of Eastwick.

Catherine LW

Except when she cheated on Sonny. I remember watching Sonny and Cher’s tv show and being disappointed and dismayed when they split up because she was sleeping around. Not too nice.

Milton Reduxed

Two snowmen standing next to eachother—One says, 'Can you smell carrots?'

Elliot Nesterman

I always comment that this film is that rare thing, a non-sappy romantic comedy. Unlike most romcoms since the 70s this was written with an adult perspective, which is one of the reasons it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Kyle K

If you want to see some more mysterious Nicholas Cage - The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Chris Thom

Omg Rick James. I forgot about that. LOL

N M

Finally! 😀

Nick Ireland

Really enjoyed this reaction. Cher hasn't made very many movies but just has such charisma on screen. You feel drawn to her. Mermaids and Witches of Eastwick are also fun Cher movies I think you would like.

WestBound

It's more than just that (without spoiling)

OddThomas

City of Angels is another good Nic Cage romance

Chris Thom

They wore T-shirts of that with Nic Cage and Pedro's faces on them for one of the reactions. Can't remember if they mentioned why. But was assuming they saw it.

K, Zachary

This was delightful quirky movie with absolutely great performances by Cher, and Nicholas Cage. Which my gf loves. Mermaids (1990) is a great Cher flick with Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci. We own that one. We own this one too. Here are Cher, Winona and Christina performing a great 60's song Shoop Shoop ( It's In His Kiss) This is absolutely separate from the movie. No movie scenes are in it.: https://youtu.be/ZM5qIJdBtX0?si=fWkaSyH87jusCaHd

Personally, when I watched Return to Me for the first time with you and Carly, that movie reminded me of Moonstruck, as the restaurant in it provides another big family dynamic, with plenty of funny, opinionated characters all bouncing off each other in a funny, familiar way. Given you've seen When Harry Met Sally and now Moonstruck, you've checked off two of my top 3 NYC 1980s rom-coms. The only one you haven't done is called Crossing Delancey (1988). I highly recommend it. Will also echo the recommendations for Mermaids (1990) and The Witches of Eastwick (1987) for Cher, and Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) for writer John Patrick Shanley. Will also suggest Valley Girl (1983), Raising Arizona (1987), for funny/romantic movies (although I'm not 100% sure I would categorize RA as a "rom-com"), and for more dramatic or non-romantic movies, Matchstick Men (2003) and The Weather Man (2005). I would also love to see what the hell Cassie makes of Being John Malkovich (1999) and Adaptation (2002), the latter of which has Cage in one of his greatest roles. I mention BJM as well because it is best to watch it first, as it contains spoilers, sort of, although it's not essential. Other general rom-com recommendations: • Charade (1963) -- of the three rom-coms I submitted when I won Trivia long ago, you chose one (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and have now watched a second with this one, so that just leaves this Audrey Hepburn-Cary Grant classic (glimpsed on TV in Pretty Woman) • New Leaf, A (1971) -- not sure what you'd make of this, but this dark comedy written by, directed by, and co-starring the great Elaine May is extremely funny • Heaven Can Wait (1978) -- a supernatural rom-com in the vein of a contemporary movie like Just Like Heaven • Something Wild (1986) and Married to the Mob (1988) -- two winners by Jonathan Demme, director of Silence of the Lambs • Broadcast News (1987) -- another one by James L. Brooks, writer/director of As Good As It Gets • Mystic Pizza (1988) -- of all the rom-coms I came up with looking at your Letterboxd while making this list, I am most shocked you haven't seen this film, the one that turned Julia Roberts into a star • Mississippi Masala (1991) -- starring a young Denzel Washington! • Singles (1992) -- ensemble about various people living in a Seattle apartment complex written and directed by Cameron Crowe (Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous) • Out of Sight (1998) -- a cheat, because this Steven Soderbergh caper starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez is not really a rom-com despite being both romantic and funny, but ever since you watched Jackie Brown (both movies are adapted from books by famed crime author Elmore Leonard), I've been dying for you to see it • Brothers Bloom, The (2008) -- the second film written and directed by Knives Out creator Rian Johnson, this is also a cheat; it's more of an adventure caper, but I think you'll still love it • TiMER (2009) -- before she was one of the lead creative forces behind "WandaVision," Jac Schaffer wrote and directed this charming independent sci-fi rom-com • Enough Said (2013) -- if you ever react to "The Sopranos," it would be a delight to see you then cover this, which features James "Tony Soprano" Gandolfini in one of his final roles

Chris Thom

I haven't seen Valley Girl yet. Tarantino was talking about seeing it the other day, and what a big indie hit it was at the time.

Chris Thom

Mermaids seems like one they both would've seen ten times by now.

Chris Thom

Leaving Las Vegas might be peak unhinged (sad category) Nic Cage. Face/Off would be a different category probably, but also peak.

Tyler Foster

It's totally trippendicular.

Gray

Well guess you've not seen his remake of The Wicker Man it's worth checking out the clips on the youtube. Batshit crazy lol

The thing they put in the champagne is sugar cubes, from an old Italian tradition...I had to look that up.

My senior year in high school, the administration finally heeded years of suggestions from folks like myself and started a drama program. Though I didn't have much theatre experience, I took to it like duck to water. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I made a lot of friends in that group including a freshman girl named Natalie Nichols. Despite the difference in our ages/grades, Natalie and I became very close (in addition to drama we also had art class together). I spent a lot of time over at her house, watching movies, rehearsing with her and especially eating. Good Lord, the food. Natalie's mother Carmen was Italian and she was always feeding me. Carmen got very involved in the drama department, helping behind the scenes, and almost became like a mother to all of us. She knew I loved movies and was incredulous that I had never seen one of her favorites: NOONSTRUCK, a film I was familiar with and curious about but had just never gotten around to. A film that she claimed was very accurate in its characterization of Italian families. I promised her I would someday. I haven't spoken to Natalie in many years (she eventually changed her name to Natalie Laruccia and became a world-renowned Tango dancer and teacher; you can look her up), but I definitely remember the last time I saw her in person. It was at her mother's memorial service. The number of funerals I have been to in my life so far can be counted on one hand, but Carmen's was significant because it was my first and it was held at her home, a house in which I have many fond memories. It happened years after I had graduated from college. I read about her passing in the obituaries of our local newspaper and was shocked. Not least of all because I was convinced I had seen her walking around at a department store a few weeks earlier. It may not have been her, but it looked a lot like her from a distance and while I didn't bother to go make sure (I wish I had) seeing her made me say to myself, "You know, I haven't talked to Carmen in a while. Maybe I should give her a call." I didn't and a few weeks later it was too late. My resolve to see MOONSTRUCK strengthened after that... and yet, I found, bizarrely, that I was also sort of hesitant to do so because in a weird way, not watching it kept her somehow still "alive" in my mind. as if every opportunity I had to watch the movie and didn't take it, there was her highly passionate and emotional voice in my head saying, "Come on, Damian. Why haven't you watched this yet?" However, after a couple decades, the feelings of guilt I have in shirking my obligation to this wonderful woman have become even more potent, so a few years ago I finally watched it... and she was right: it was good.

FranciscoGios

I’m going to tell you how I accidentally knew the actress Cher; is corky but here it goes. Back then there were a lot of action-cartoons shows back then and there was a version of the G.I Joe cartoon called MASK so I went to Blockbuster looking for something to watch and I grabbed this cassette titled Mask thinking I’m going to watch a live action from my favorite cartoon show and lord and behold it was this charismatic actress Cher stealing the show and from there I knew who was Cher.

Canadianant

That was my big question did anyone ever figure out what was in the champagne?? I was like are they putting Alka-Seltzer in there??

Tyler Foster

Oh, also: given you seem to be roughly in the same neighborhood as me in age, the Cher song that was inescapable in the late '90s and early '00s was "Believe." 🎶 Do you be-LIE-EVE in LIFE after LOVE? I can FEEL someTHING inSIDE me say...I really don't think I'm strong enough, no... 🎶

Carol_White

Today I learned that Mormons and Italians are antipodes.

Chris Thom

Did you like the movie?

Chris Thom

For some instant Cher fun in a bottle, see the clip on YouTube of her performing with Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 on her old variety show. VERY 70's and pure joy. I like her voice.

Steve Smith

So, if you're in Utah and dig a hole through the Earth, and get to the other side, you'd be in Italy.

FranciscoGios

I only remember her being in it, and I only remembered the story was somewhat inspiring.

Larry Darrell

John Mahoney was also the father in Say Anything, and was seen in, In the Line of Fire and Primal Fear.

Larry Darrell

I love this movie. Cher was very, very beautiful. Olympia Dukakis was oh so lovable. Nicolas Cage in this film might be my spirit animal…. and I love how this film cuts through all the Bull-Drama of relationships and being in Love. There’s no sense in the Bull-Drama. “Are you happy?” and “Do you love me?” are Yes or No questions. It’s that simple. You either say “Yes” and fight for the good, or you say “No” and move on with your life… until you find someone that you can respond to those questions with, the adverb “Awful.” :-) as in… Are you happy? — Awfully and… Do you love me? — I love you Awful. ;-)

Milton Reduxed

Imagine how interesting life would be if people actually talked like this

Clay F

+1 for Out of Sight (1998)

Clay F

Leaving Las Vegas A Nicolas Cage movie I like is "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995) (drama, romance) [RT=90%] in which Cage won Best Actor Oscar (his only Oscar win). Cage is paired w/Elisabeth Shue who was nom for Best Actress Oscar. Wild at Heart A Nicolas Cage (age 26) movie w/Laura Dern (age 23) I have nostalgia is David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” (1990) (romance/crime). I was 27 when movie released and developed an instant crush on Laura Dern. This movie clip (2 min) is Nicolas Cage singing “Love Me” (made famous by Elvis) to a receptive Laura Dern in a club in front of a crowd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKpcVGinVOk&list=RDcKpcVGinVOk&start_radio=1

Chris Thom

I want to see Leaving Las Vegas on the channel. But really not sure how that reaction would go. Might be interesting.

Chris Thom

TBH I've always kind of thought that.

Chris Thom

Yeah I don't remember a ton about it either. Just that it was half inspiring, and half sad/depressing.

Chris Thom

I took a film/editing/computer/multimedia track in high school and it was so, so much fun. One of the courses was a film class. When I see people from school we still talk about what a good time we had. Took a four day field trip to Hollywood and saw the cast of Friends on the backlot with Brad Pitt. And randomly met Bill Hader while he was a lowly editor for reality shows in the editing bay.

Mike Lemon

People talk to each other? Weird.

MikeLL

I swear when I saw Valley Girl in '83 when it first came out, my first glimpse of Nicholas Cage, I was convinced that he was going to be a big star. I said to myself, he will be the James Stewart of this age. I was wrong, Tom Hanks turned out to be that generations Jimmy Stewart, but I was right about Nick Cage having a certain quality and becoming a big star.

Chris Thom

Bag of rocks on a boat is quite suspicious. She correct about that.

Flounder

Two movies that show off his versatility but don’t get a lot of love are The Vampire’s Kiss and The Lord of War. The first one is an oddball comedy where he believes he’s been bitten by a vampire the other is an intense drama where he plays an international arms dealer.

Chris Thom

He plays eccentricity so well. I'd totally forgotten Lord of War.

Chris Thom

Just read that Olympia Dukakis won the Oscar for this. I didn't know that.

Larry Darrell

Yep. Cher too. and the writer John Patrick Shanley.

Mark White

Yep, looks like a date night movie to me! 😂

Clay F

+1 for Lord of War

MrKsummer7

Hey Frankie! Make me a bowl of Minestrone!

Old As Dirt Bert

The next Norman Jewison movie (Cassie's seen In the Heat of the Night) should be The Russians Are Coming... - his film before Heat. It was shown at the Berlin Film Festival when new, and the Russians requested a screening (during the Cold War). When shown in Russia, the artistic and perhaps political community was upset that they hadn't come up with the concept. If PAF should ever pop up my selection, we'll all get to see it.

Just Plain Bob

For years now, Paramount has been pumping out one garbage Star Trek show after another. (SMILING Klingons! Really? Vulcans given to public displays of affection? Absurd. I don’t think modern tv writers have ever watched Star Trek before.) Well. Here’s a Star Trek series I could get behind. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1C62FVkuvf/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Flounder

Is I could get Cassie to react to only one Steven Soderbergh film I would want it to be his first: SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE. Such a classic that really opened doors for young directors like Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Allison Anders, Todd Haynes, and Hal Hartley

Javier Hernandez

Cher first became famous as part of the singing duo Sonny and Cher in the 1960s and they later had a variety show "The Sonny and Cher Show" that was part music performance and short skits with celebrity guests. After Sonny and Cher split as a couple and business partners Cher got a nose job and turned to acting. In the early 1980s she hit a few homeruns with "Silkwood", "Mask", and the "Witches of Eastwick". At that time she was known for two things; showing up at awards shows with outrageous gowns by Bob Mackie (that included headpieces and body cutouts) and dating younger men. Any time you hear about Madonna or Lady Gaga pushing the envelope just know that Cher did it first. Check out the song "I got You Babe", "If I Could Turn Back Time", and the song that put auto-tune on the map "Do You Believe in Life After Love". Movies: 1983 Silkwood - supporting role w/ Meryl Streep about nuclear powerplant whistleblower who disappeared (true story) 1985 Mask - A mother who raises a boy who has sever disfigurement (true story) with Sam Elliot and Erick Stoltz 1987 The Witches of Eastwick - What happens when Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Cher cast a spell to create the perfect man .... Jack Nicholson? Cassy you would love this! 1990 Mermaids - supporting role as a strange mom to teenage Winona Ryder and a very young Christina Ricci.

Chris Thom

Just saw a clip of her presenting an Oscar or something, and her outfit was WILD. Huge black head dress.

Clay F

Good post Javier.

MikeLL

Yes!

Zane From Canada

Another film to react to with Cher is Suspect (1987). It may be right up your alley, a murder mystery and courtroom drama. Dennis Quaid, Liam Neeson, and John Mahoney are in it, also.

Grizzly

I love this movie. So wonderfully done, an amazing cast and pure genius casting Cher and Olympia Dukakis as mother and daughter, and in my opinion the grandfather is truly a gem…”Someone tell a joke.” 😂 And I’m not sure if you ever figured it out but the college professor who always gets water thrown on him played Frasier’s father. Thanks for reacting to this and sharing

JPDotCom23

"But shower first", hahaha

JPDotCom23

Cher made her bones with Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell in 'Silkwood', a true story. She was also fantastic in 'Mask', also a true story, and opposite Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer in 'The Witches of Eastwick'. Nicholas Cage, born Nicholas Coppola, who's uncle is writer-director Francis Ford Coppola, won his Oscar in 'Leaving Las Vegas', he was also good in 'The Rock', 'Con Air', 'Face/Off' and 'Bringing Out the Dead'.

Daniel Doble

Ronny and Loretta and one Waiter are the only ones still alive.
