Flags of our Fathers plus Letters from Iwo Jima!

dachen13

Tora Tora Tora? 🤩

John Neiberger

Oh, man. Tora! Tora! Tora! is so good, and Deer Hunter is a classic for a reason. Flags of our Fathers is excellent, too. Too many to choose from.

Louis Chapman

I haven't seen any of these 🤦🏾‍♂️

Wes

You sickos will pick deer hunter 🤣🤣🤣

Night King01

Downfall would be a really good choice

chevchev

Tora Tora Tora

Steven Deleon

I got one you should consider. HACKSAW RIDGE. Starring Andrew Garfield

Dryfesands

"Empire Of The Sun" for me. Legitimately haunting.

Eric Wallace

Flags of our fathers needs to be watched back to back (same week or two weeks) as letters from iwo jima or your missing half the point

Stick Figure Studios

I'm voting for EMPIRE OF THE SUN. One of Spielberg's more underrated efforts.

Starpartyguy

For me, Deer Hunter reminded me too much of Vietnam and the horrors of the war. Kelly’s Heroes and Dirty Dozen are a little more lighter.

Rob Jones

Please not deer hunter it’s long slow and boring.

MAV293 (MARK)

Tora Tora Tora is one of the best and most historically accurate films made about War! When talking about war films, the 1993 “Gettysburg” should always be on the list!!

Above Average Dave

I mean, how can you not pick THE DIRTY DOZEN or KELLY’S HEROES?

Phil Stubblefield

Tora! Tora! Tora! Can you see my theme continued from the last poll? "(Mostly) Factual Tales of WWII"

Above Average Dave

Also, looks like someone in legal got ahold of TORA! TORA! TORA! (lawyer joke in there)🤣

Walter

Totally Heartbreak Ridge - any time I can vote for Clint, I will.

pickupthepieces

Downfall (Der Untergang) is a must see. It won't win, but for other patreons, if you like war movies, go see it. Don't be put off that it's in German. They are the right country to make this movie for obvious reasons.

Popcorn In Bed

it’s probably my fav war film i’ve seen-you should check out the reaction :)

MikeLL

The Dirty Dozen gets my one and only vote in this poll. I’m not sure Cassie would appreciate The Deer Hunter. 1960’s WW 2 films are awesome!

Phil Stubblefield

Of course, the lesser known legal drama "Tort! Tort! Tort!" is pretty good... 😂

Milton Reduxed

If you watch Deer Hunter screen it in the theatre room

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

I'm fine if The Deer Hunter (1978) wins the poll (although I have voted for Empire of the Sun (1987)), but just saying not everybody is a fan of that film. UK film critic, Mark Kermode, despises it saying "The Deer Hunter (1978) is one of the worst films ever made and a testament to the fact that, if allowed to do whatever they want, filmmakers will take their cameras and crawl up their own backsides." He also said this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEI7i1djTKA

LukeG84

Voted for Empire of the Sun. Not seen it, but of all the movies on this poll that’s the only one that intrigues me based on a quick IMDb search. John Malkovich, a young Christian Bale and directed by Steven Spielberg. Good enough for me.

Johnny

Tora Tora Tora is an amazing movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor. It's so well done, and it's a shame that more people don't know about it.

Graeme Edgeler

Save Tora! Tora! Tora! for December 7. 85th Anniversary this year.

D. T. Nelson

Tort! Tort! Tort! ????? Wouldn't that be a courtroom battle? I do believe the movie would be Tora! Tora! Tora! I choose Flags of Our Fathers, but mostly in order to get to Letters from Iwo Jima. The first movie was okay, but the second one from the Japanese perspective was amazingly good. Blows all these other movies out of the water.... (pun not intended).

Xavier Casanova

Cassie loves weddings. I'm sure The Deer Hunter will be right up her alley. ;-)

Milton Reduxed

Kermode is named after a toilet and doesn't like The Big Lebowski—The prosecution rests

Allen W. McDonnell

Heartbreak Ridge is one of my all time favorite Clint Eastwood movies!

Dissonant Bard

Joyeux Noël would be a great addition to the list, but would also be wonderful for December.

Scriptmonkeys

Tort! Tort! Tort! A compelling legal drama revolving around the three most common tort types: negligence, intentional, and strict liability. Will the victim(s) be compensated? Will monetary damages be awarded? You’ll have to watch to find out!! In any case, was Tora! Tora! Tora! as Judith Crist said a Bora! Bora! Bora! ? Who can say?

Stick Figure Studios

It's a marvelous film. One of Spielberg's early attempts at serious cinema and though it wasn't too successful when it was released, it's rated far more highly now.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't always agree with Kermode, but sometimes he's spot on.

Tyler Hale

If we get Kingdom, it needs to be directors cut

Jim

It’s Tora! Tora! Tora!, not Tort! Tort! Tort! 😂 And it’s a fantastic movie, by the way.

Apollo838

Oh my goodness, PLEASE do Kelly’s Heroes, it’s such an underrated classic!

LukeG84

Often the case with great movies. They’re not fully appreciated until later on.

mikethemotormouth

I was wondering why that title didn't sound familiar

Larry Darrell

The Dirty Dozen The Deer Hunter Kingdom of Heaven Watch all three in a theme week. That’ll be one helluva Spiritual Journey there. :-)

Larry Darrell

There’s something in The Deer Hunter that is very hopeful that a lot of people miss.

Rod Reavern

Here’s “Kelly’s Heroes.” This was one of my dad’s favourite war movies. I didn’t like when I saw it as a kid, because I thought it was kinda cheesy. Then as an adult, I realized that it’s more of a heist movie, and I began to appreciate it more. I hope “The Deer Hunter” doesn’t win. Cassie will not enjoy that movie, but I’m guessing some sadists will enjoy watching her suffer through it. I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, just not a movie for Cassie. It looks like “The Dirty Dozen” is winning. I’m indifferent to that one. I feel like “Inglourius Basterds” has made Dirty Dozen irrelevant. At least in that movie, you knew everyone in the movie theatre deserved their fate. If you want a war movie about gleefully and unapologetically killing scores of N@zis, I recommend “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” It’s really fun. EDIT: Oh no, I knew it. The sadists want to traumatize Cassie with “The Deer Hunter.” Seriously, just let her watch Rambo 2 & 3, and be happy. Or better yet, Hot Shots 1 and Part Deux.

Bill Maurer

Downfall - phenomenal acting performance by Bruno Ganz. The Dirty Dozen - because it is The Dirty Dozen

Paul Lovett

You need to watch Warfare

Rob Jones

I agree it’s not a great movie to see someone else watch. And it’s a poor rewatch

Rob Jones

Come on heartbreak Ridge. Clint’s character it great in this movie

Bryan Fritchie

The Dirty Dozen absolutely has to win this, right?

Shaun

Really? Haven’t heard that before…..

Allboroking

Too bad „Der Untergang“ (Downfall) won’t win. Amazing acting by Bruno Ganz and a lot of great and famous german actors.

To Wa

Cassie is an adult and can handle The Deer Hunter. There are some hard scenes, but there are some beautiful scenes. This is Meryl Streep's first film :•) and John Cazale's last :•( . And Christopher Walken's Oscar Winning performance!

Rob Jones

I wish the Big Red One was on the list

Milton Reduxed

A film that rewards patience—also helps to be tranquilized and definitely leave your phone out the room

Jon

Empire of the Sun is not necessarily a "war film" but takes place during WWII, the Japanese invasion of Shanghai. It's one of Spielberg's best directed dramatic films. Probably the best next to Schindler's List, IMO, and Christian Bale is phenomenal.

Ricky A Wiley

I agree, even though "The Deer Hunter" won 5 academy awards it's not a Cassie movie, she's too easily upset by, well, what we know is in that film.

Rob Jones

I’ve seen it twice in my life no desire to watch again

Catherine LW

Tort! Tort! Tort! 😂😂😂 Sounds like a legal thriller! 😂

Catherine LW

Best film on this poll. Sad.

MahlerEnigmatic

I guess The English Patient didn't make the poll. Oh well, All it did was win best picture of the year from 1996. I hope it will get another shot at getting on a poll sooner rather than later. 🙏🤞

Catherine LW

Honestly, as a daughter of someone who endured Japanese occupation during the war, it irritates me how Spielberg whitewashed the conduct of the Japanese holding internment camps. He made it look nice. It wasn’t.

Mannygogou

"Tort" heehee... I believe it's a dessert? 🙂

Catherine LW

Ever since Germany declassified their WWII records, they have made some brilliant films. Downfall, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, A Hidden Life… Cassie said she set a goal to watch a foreign film, a subtitled film, a war film. Downfall fulfills all of those criteria. Too bad it’s not going to win. Very eye-opening account of Nazi Germany’s defeat and Hitler’s demise.

Eddie Perkins

The Dirty Dozen and The Deer Hunter are the best films out of both polls.

Richard Maurer

Surprise! Deer Hunter’s going to win.

Catherine LW

Saw it once, never again. I suspect it will not do well on YouTube.

DavidJPL

By a landslide I predict. :)

ChiefKC

I fear all we have done is to awakened a giant subpoena and filled it with a terrible rage!

DavidJPL

A "legal wrong". The desert is "Torte". ;-) LOL

Richard Maurer

I think someone once mentioned that somewhere.

Maisie

Please watch Empire of the Sun I've waited soooo long!

DavidJPL

Hysterical! lol

DavidJPL

Come on, we all know she meant "Torte" the desert. ;-) lol

Thomas Cooney

Does anyone else love that “Tora! Tora! Tora!” has been classically Cassified and spelled “Tort! Tort! Tort!” Lol maybe it’s about Civil law courtroom drama (sorry, I’m a lawyer. Civil law is called “Tort Law) - love you Cassie! Never change!!

Stick Figure Studios

I'm not sure I would say he made it look "nice," but he certainly didn't make it look as horrible as it really was. Despite it's more adult subject matter, I think he still wanted to make it accessible to families (like THE COLOR PURPLE). SCHINDLER'S LIST was the first R-rated film he did.

ChiefKC

Too many good one in the same poll. Tora Tora Tora, The Dirty Dozen, Heartbreak Ridge, Kelly's Heros, and The Deer Hunter.

DavidJPL

All these comments are hysterical! lol

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

No offense, but Fargo (1996) should have won Best Picture, not The English Patient (1996). Just my opinion, feel free to disagree!

Just Plain Bob

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a fantastic film that tells an accurate story of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I first saw it on dvd more than twenty years ago and it was one of the first films that I immediately rewatched with commentary. Proof that an accurate film about a historic event can be interesting without some absurd melodrama inserted into the plot without meaning or consequence.

Richard Maurer

Too bad Sisu isn’t on here, great war movie. It wouldn’t win because not enough people have seen it, but it should win. Either Sisu or War of the Gargantuas should’ve won.

SeanATX

Tort Tort Tort, eh?

Joseph M Sica

Hey Cas, Carly, and PIB Crew! Tort Tort Tort Kekek that's gotta be the funniest thing I've ever seen! I'm sure someone pointed this out, but Tora Tora Tora is a great movie! Nice Deer Hunter is winning! That's a great movie! These are all great movies. Heartbreak Ridge or The Dirty Dozen would be my pic if Deer Hunter wasn't dominating! We can't wait to see this reaction Cas!

Robert da Spruce

Probably won’t win, but I choose Flags of Our Fathers/Letters of Iwo Jima

Richard Maurer

People who keep tortoises as pets sometimes refer to them as ‘torts’

Vak

Empire of the Sun is sadly a bit behind. I'd love to see it covered here. That film is incredible. My father served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, and had...let's say, strong opinions on the Japanese war effort. I was stunned when he was literally in tears when the would-be kamikaze teen "pilot" was completely breaking down as he couldn't get his plane in the air, and it was shattering his entire world. Even Dad, with all of his preconceptions, got that. The only other war movie I've seen him have that reaction to was "Saving Private Ryan," and even that in only two moments - the beginning, and the end.

Starpartyguy

Not on the list, Run Silent, Run Deep. In Harm’s Way, Guns of Navarone, Tobruk, Sahara.

Gray

My films not doing too well on either poll, shame as Kelly Heroes wouldve been great fun.

Gray

Yeah i'm not bothered about Deer Hunter, there are better movies on the lists imo

Morgan A. Colbert

Empire of the Sun is an all time favorite of mine.

Morgan A. Colbert

One of those, I saw this way too young types of film.

Browniewin

The dirty dozen has a really good cast and is an adventure.

Big Lazy Dragon

Shouldn't Tort! Tort! Tort! (1970) actually be Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)?

ArsTropica

objection! you’re out of order!

Big Lazy Dragon

I think she meant Tora! Tora! Tora! Stupid autocorrect.

Big Lazy Dragon

Interestingly enough, 'Where Eagles Dare' (1968) is not on either of these polls. I'm guessing that since it made the top 10 of this month's Pick-A-Flick, she's already planning to watch it eventually.

Alexander

There is a powerful film, a hidden gem that was somehow lost and under appreciated (maybe for its central premise) but I believe that’s exactly why it’s such a powerful moving film. It’s called Savior starring Dennis Quaid from 1998, set on the Bosnian Wars. AFAIK it’s not even on Blu-ray and it’s not on any streaming service. The only copy I have is the DVD version which I got used because I couldn’t find it anywhere else. It’s such a great film with a moving story set in a seldom seen period of the Bosnian wars. I’m more than happy to send you my copy, even if it’s not considered for a reaction, but just to have you watch it.

Vak

Spielberg sometimes absolutely misses the mark. But when he's on his game...WOW is he on his game, to an extent that can leave an audience absolutely shattered or awed. I can't even really think of another high/low director/filmmaker of that magnitude. Maybe Kubrick? I'd love to stick Ron Howard on the list, but I realize I'm kind of on an island, yelling into the void that "'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Apollo 13' are among the best semi-historical pieces of cinema ever committed to film." Everybody likes them, yeah. And Howard got awards out of them, yeah. But that particular island still doesn't have a huge population, if you follow me. "Oh, he's good, sometimes, but he's not at THAT level." Grrr. For me, it's the second one that pushes him up. Almost any director can stumble into creating absolute art, once, by happenstance. Twice isn't a coincidence, though.

MahlerEnigmatic

Yet she's seen Fargo already huh? All I am saying is can anybody please give this film she has not seen a chance to watch or not? We can debate later on which film is better, but at least it's worthy of a shot to see for herself which one is better?

Patrick Gibbs

lol it’s “Tora” not “Tort” 😊

Larry Darrell

+ 1 for The Guns of Navarone (1961)

Larry Darrell

+ 1 for Sisu (2022) Badass Film Alert!

Paul Cox

T! T! T! probably the all-around best film in this list, Kelly's Heroes the most fun, and Deer Hunter the most bleak. Of course we know which one will win.

John Cranberry

I thought Cassie had watched Deer Hunter?

Stick Figure Studios

Not yet. FULL METAL JACKET, APOCALYPSE NOW, PLATOON, BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY and WE WERE SOLDIERS she's seen.

MahlerEnigmatic

The problem is Empire of the Sun is not a war movie. I don't even know why it's in this poll because obviously from the voting you can tell that all the gung-ho guys are going for the gung-ho films. Without spoiling the plot, I guess you guys would understand what I'm saying. All I can really say is that the war is not the main character like it is for the rest of the films in this poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Kubrick was a genius. Howard is ok. Not a bad director (in fact, he's a decent journeyman), but he has to be one of the most unremarkable filmmakers from a stylistic or aesthetic/formalist point of view I've ever seen (very middle of the road). Personally, I feel like he peaked in the '90s and almost everything he's made since has been mediocre at best. I'm with you on APOLLO 13. It's a terrific movie, arguably his best, but I think A BEAUTIFUL MIND is irresponsible, dishonest and manipulatively cloying dreck (though it does have good performances). Same with CINDERELLA MAN. Spielberg is such a sophisticated and gifted auteur that he makes Howard look like Kevin Smith.

Stick Figure Studios

I enjoyed SISU for how outrageously bonkers it was (still need to see the sequel), but I didn't find it to be much of a war film myself. More of an action movie that just used the war as a backdrop.

Kevin

Well, now I'm hungry...

Stick Figure Studios

I think ENGLISH PATIENT is a pretty lousy film myself, but I would never tell someone that they shouldn't see it. It won best picture after all, so people should watch it and make up their own minds.

Richard Maurer

Okay, but I think that still counts. As much as Kelly’s Hero’s counts, anyway.

Richard Maurer

The Dirty Dozen still has a chance to beat Deer Hunter - but probably won’t.

Richard Maurer

War of the Gargantuas is a great war movie. Two giant “brothers” (one’s sort of a sea-born clone of the other) find themselves on different sides of a conflict over dietary habits.

Mannygogou

people who eat tortoises sometimes roll them in sugar first 😅😆😁

JarHead0351

Some dang good movies on this list. Kelly's Heroes and Dirty Dozen are mine two pick. Just FYI, Heartbreak Ridge used my training range where I taught booby training. Semper Fi

Brian Sheely

Holy shit…I voted for The Deer Hunter, but I sure as hell didn’t expect it to almost crush everything else.

Chris Thom

Yeah, it's more of a war-adjacent kind of movie. But it's an interesting perspective on war times and kind of runs parallel to the Japanese internment camps we had in the US. It's a bit unique compared to other movies on the time period.

Chris Thom

I don't remember much about Deer Hunter at all. Is it very depressing? I do remember having a very dark feeling after watching it.

Jacob King

I’d use the same rule for war movies as people use for Christmas movies. If the war wasn’t happening would the story still work. Empire of the Sun is easily as much a war movie as The Deer Hunter.

Jacob King

It’s not a good time, which is appropriate for a movie about the effects of war but it does give you the feeling that the war is incidental to the misery of the characters.

Chris Breisch

I'm sad that so few of you are interested in Tora! Tora! Tora! Great movie.

Chris Thom

I'm certain I saw it at some point, but drawing a complete blank. Just read a comment that said Meryl Streep was in it and I had no idea. I do vaguely remember a wedding scene.

Chris Thom

I suppose I don't quite consider Schindler's List a war movie.

Chris Thom

Spell check going off the rails again. It's very hit and miss sometimes.

Darren Harrison

Never heard of Tort! Tort! Tort!, but Tora! Tora! Tora! is a great movie. The Japanese scenes were shot by a Japanese director and the American scenes by an American director

DAVID COSTELLO

I love it. It's Pearl Harbor without the stupid love triangle.

Chris Thom

I've never seen it. But this just made me vote for it.

JPDotCom23

I think she means 'Tora Tora Tora'

Clay F

Definitely a "war film." A movie doesn't have to depict multiple battles to be considered a war film.

Clay F

As it should.

SEAN ƴü KAY

How do i select deer hunter twice... But really...omg lets all start hugging now

Clay F

I voted these 3: --EMPIRE OF THE SUN --THE DEER HUNTER --Downfall THE DEER HUNTER is the only one of the 3 Vietnam War movies on the AFI Top 100 she has not reacted to. EMPIRE OF THE SUN finished 4th place in the Spielberg poll -- a mere 5 votes behind 3rd place Duel that got a reaction. As much as I liked Duel, I would have much preferred Empire of the Sun = a historical epic war drama and coming-of-age film. Based on a semi-autobiographical novel. I would have voted Letters from Iwo Jima if on the poll, which I prefer over Flags of our Fathers. Last year, I wish we would have got The Dirty Dozen instead of The Expendables that does not have the complexity of the male-bonding classic The Dirty Dozen. I like Kelly's Heroes and Tora Tora Tora ok. While Tora, Tora, Tora (watched several times over last 50 yrs) could use some more drama to reach larger audience, to me the presentation of facts is the drama.

Phil Stubblefield

My favorite on your list is Run Silent, Run Deep!, a classic submarine movie based on the novel of the same name written by Commander Edward L. Beach, a veteran of WWII submarines. If you enjoy such literature, I would suggest Wahoo and Clear the Bridge, both true stories, written by Commander Richard O'Kane, a Medal of Honor recipient who served first as executive officer and then as captain on ten submarine patrols in WWII. Some of the stories those sailors lived through rival anything that Hollywood could ever devise!

Clay F

A Japanese internment camp during WWII is defintely a war movie. Prisoners of WAR. Completely makes sense Empire of Sun is on poll. You want an unduly narrow definition of "war movie." The backdrop of the war is huge/defining in Empire of the Sun. Do you consider The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) a war movie? A movie does not have to depict multiple battle/combat scenes to be considered a war movie. The war genre is broad. The Google page for Empire of the Sun gives genre as "war/action." Wikipedia labels it an "epic coming-of-age war drama film." IMDb lists "war epic" and "war" among the genres. NYT gives genre as "Drama, History, War." Common Sense Media: "This war movie is grim, emotional, and violent. Expect scenes of bombing, shooting, clubbing, looting, stealing, dead bodies, and starving prisoners of war." How is that not a war movie?

Starpartyguy

I’ve already read both books. I specifically remember the incident in the book Wahoo where they were attacking a convoy docked in a harbor. When Mush Morton dove he ordered the periscope up to give the attacking destroyer a target to bear down on. And he fired 2 torpedoes and sunk it. I believe that is the basis for attack method used in this movie. Btw, I just watched it last night.

Starpartyguy

One other item. When Dick O’Kane was captured by the Japanese, he was placed in the same camp as Pappy Boyington.

SEAN ƴü KAY

Clay..yes...If we vote her to watch 'Deer Hunter' we r going to hell. If she chooses to watch it with carly, she is going to hell with us....I made reservations for us all ahead of time... simgle file...lets all get to our assigned seats in hell in an orderly fashion...

SEAN ƴü KAY

Reason to avoid i think...but ya...

SEAN ƴü KAY

I guess i always felt like 'Deer Hunter', 'Boogie Nights', 'Am hist X' and others such as were always kinda like "hey, not cool for recommending that" kinda film grouped....even though oscar and star stacked and great...idk...discord chat might be better for this topic I bring up...

SEAN ƴü KAY

'Requiem for a dream' I would add too

Clay F

All 4 are great. She could handle them. Recommend them.

Clay F

Yeah, I know what you are saying.

SEAN ƴü KAY

Just think it'll be...interesting....to say the least

Clay F

Sorry Sean about my reply (now edited) because I misunderstood. I need to work on my reading comprehension. Agree -- a Deer Hunter reaction would be interesting.

Clay F

Avoid what?

SEAN ƴü KAY

It will get get a lot of views I think

YodatheHobbit

Unless she was hungry for some poptart!tart!tarts!

YodatheHobbit

Not every war movie is about guns and fighting and soldiers as the main characters. It's still war.

YodatheHobbit

I'm disappointed both "of the Sun" movies in each poll aren't doing well.

Ria Grix

Downfall is more than just a war movie, it’s more like a historical document. Bruno Ganz putting in a performance that is frighteningly perfect.

Ria Grix

Is Tort, Tort, Tort that movie about a section of civil law?

David Blount

The Deer Hunter is one of the greatest. Please let this nice lady watch something else.

Clarence Newman

Deer Hunter is one of those boxes Cassie needs to tick if she wants to be a true Cinephile. There's an empty space if you haven't watched The Deerhunter. It's not exactly a chucklefest, though, and I do like a chucklefest. I also like seeing Cassie enjoy herself, so I'll often lean in that direction. Serious war movies are so important, but it's also good to have some that embrace the lightness of the human condition (*especially* in extreme circumstances like war), because that's important too. It's what keeps us going. It always reminds me of something Billy Crystal's uncle said to him at the wake following his father's death (from Billy's "700 Sundays" stand-up special). At the wake, Billy was infuriated when he saw his uncle singing and dancing with a band in their living room, while people laughed and clapped all around. When Billy confronted him about it, his uncle put a hand on his shoulder and calmly replied: "Billy. Even at your worst times, it's ok, and important, to laugh." How very true. That's why I'm pretty torn on this poll. Deer Hunter is on my list so I really want a reaction to that, but I would also love to see Cassie watch Heartbreak Ridge (great fun, with Clint on iconic form), The Dirty Dozen (star-studded, even if Cassie doesn't know most of the stars), and Kelly's Heroes, also with Clint and with a good undercurrent of fun. Poor Cassie is getting loaded down with prior promises at the moment, so it's unlikely she'll watch more than the outright winner in this poll. Maybe the top 2 if the vote is close. Kingdom of Heaven seems to be the frontrunner right now, so we'll probably get that one in the end. I just hope the great films I mentioned will get a watch somewhere down the line.

Clarence Newman

Tort! Tort! Tort! is instantly disqualified on the grounds of gross typing error. All votes for it are hereby transferred to Heartbreak Ridge, which will put Clint and Stitch Jones in a comfortable lead. The poll can then be ended forthwith.

MikeLL

You must be correct. It could be nothing else!

MikeLL

It's crushing me.

Clarence Newman

Deer Hunter proves that, even in war, there's still time to play games.

Jason Haigh-Ellery

Downfall is a phenominal movie - but why no "Darkest Day"

Clay F

Looks like the final poll will be Deer Hunter vs. Kingdom of Heaven. I will vote Deer Hunter but also would like a reaction to Kingdom of Heaven.

My_Cousin_Mose

I'm not a huge fan of it but the music is phenomenal.

Patrick McDevitt

Seeing what GOT is doing to you, I think comedies or uplifting movies are needed whenever possible. So out of this list I voted for Kelly's Hero's. As great as Deer Hunter is, it would be like an episode of GOT lol.

Kevin Albertina

I assume that's Tora! Tora! Tora! not Tort! Tort! Tort! Haven't talked about torts since business law class about 50 years ago.

Christian Becker

Darn it. Paths of Glory is missing as an option. As much as I like Kingdom of Heaven, but for me that's more of an adventure flick rather than a war movie.

bgb1975 (Brian)

Me too. Heartbreak Ridge. Durnit! C'est la vie.

Roger Banks

Tort! Tort! Tort!? I think that belongs in the courtroom drama category.

Milton Reduxed

Deer Hunter perfectly sets up Rambo II—payback time

Mark White

I’m not surprised how these polls are going. I think with war movies the more serious, awarding winning types will find their way to the top. The best war movies for me such as Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon or Apocalypse Now are those movies which you need to give your full attention too and have time to digest afterwards. However I don’t tend to watch them over and over again. Those repeat watches tend to be slightly older or of a different tone. Such as Kelly’s hero’s or Dirty Dozen. Heartbreak Ridge is another you can just pop on for a bit of escapism. I think it depends on what mood I’m in. If I’ve had a tough day, maybe a Kelly’s hero’s. If I want a proper movie night then the thin red line or Empire of the Sun are a good option.

MahlerEnigmatic

You already contradicted your own statement to me of what it is. As you listed, there are different sources that give different perceptions what the type of film it is. The main character is a person and not war itself. The war is a backdrop or in the background. It's about a coming of age of a person. And how he grows up. Let's not give away too much more info. You could put a person in another impossible situation in a different location and in a different time and give the same type of PTSD without being in a war. Because if you see in the description of the illness, it's all about stress and not about war.

Clarence Newman

Then I'm voting for Heartbreak Ridge and The Dirty Dozen.

altfrags

never seen or heard of the movies

Clarence Newman

It hurts my arterial thumper that Heartbreak Ridge is 5th.

Aaron Ritchie

I’m sorry but I just lost it at Tort! Tort! Tort! 😂

John A

TORT LMAO

John A

Stop coddling her

2-Can

It’s about a legal battle.

John A

Excellent films, she really should watch them regardless of the poll

Above Average Dave

"The point is moot!" "Moot!? Moot!? Marbury vs. Madison completely invalidates your point!" "Moot, moot. You sound like a pregnant cow." "Your honor!" "Counsel! You will observe decorum in my court!" I mean, it writes itself.

Richard Maurer

Yeah, that’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works!

Scott Macaulay

Still hoping for Kelly’s Heroes on my pick a movie drawing thingy. My favorite dad movie of all time

Dean Holt

Fingers crossed, I’ve been wanting Cassie to react to this for years. But it never wins on polls, because there’s always something more well known.

Scott Macaulay

Knock it off with them negative waves! Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? 😂

Dean Holt

Kelly’s Heros looks like loosing another poll, Cassie really just needs to watch it because just like Heartbreak Ridge I don’t think many people ether know about it or just haven’t seen it. So like most polls it’s not the best movies that win, but the one that’s the most well known that wins So no surprise that the deer Hunter is walking away with this one, as it’s probably the most well known. It’s also seriously overrated imo just because of one scene in the movie. As it’s 3 hours and very little happens especially in the first hour, never seen Cassie fall asleep during a reaction and this could be the first 😂.

Clarence Newman

Shush for a minute. We haven't had the official word on it yet.

Dean Holt

Clay F Deer Hunters the worst one imo as it’s just a snooze fest. It’s only really popular because of one well known scene.

Sarah Jane

I voted for Empire & Deer Hunter, BUT:

Sarah Jane

I voted for Empire & Deer Hunter, BUT: Gallipoli is a incredible war movie, from quite early in Mel Gibson's career.

Richard Maurer

You just did - as Judge Dredd says, I AM THE LAW!

Bill Maurer

In the future, I would recommend just a WW 2 War Movie Poll, or maybe even two polls with a lot of movies to choose from Downfall The Dirty Dozen Flags of our Fathers / Letters from Iowa Jima Kelly's Heroes Tora! Tora! Tora! (really wanted to type in Tort! Tort! Tort!) Empire of the Sun The Longest Day The Bridge too Far (perfect compliment to her watching Patton and Band of Brothers) The Thin Red Line Midway

Clarence Newman

Ooh, Judge Dredd. One of Stallone's finest hours.

Clay F

Dean -- I respectuflly disagree. While it's my least favorite of the 3 Vietnam War movies on the AFI Top 100, It's popular and critically acclaimed because of more than one scene.

Clay F

Empire & Deer Hunter are my top 2 in this poll.

Clay F

Cassie likes background. She will love that background the first 40 minutes of Deer Hunter.

MrKsummer7

I would not consider The Deer Hunter a “War Movie”; rather, it is a before-and-after drama about the psychological impact of the Vietnam War. A “War Movie” should be centered on the war itself, whether in a POW camp like The Great Escape, The Bridge on the River Kwai, or through extensive battlefield footage or combat action like Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, or Band of Brothers. Even the Dirty Dozen, The Patriot, and Kelly’s Heroes are about the War. The Deer Hunter is a 3-hour drama, including a one-hour wedding sequence, and 30 minutes of so-called combat, if you consider Russian roulette, since they used revolvers. The scene itself is a theatrical metaphor for the randomness of life and death, thought up by the director and screenwriter. There are no historical records of Russian roulette being actually used as a torture tactic in Vietnam. The Deer Hunter should be on a Drama poll, replace it with Battle of the Bulge (1965) I’ll also pass on Torta! Torta! Torta!, because I’m not hungry.

Clay F

1st place "The Deer Hunter" (1978) [AFI Top 100] --Won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Sound. --Christopher Walken won Best Supporting Actor Oscar. --Robert De Niro nominated for Best Actor Oscar. --Meryl Streep nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscar. 3rd place "Empire of the Sun" (1987) [Spielberg] nominated for 6 Oscars. --13-yr old Christian Bale (as lead), John Malkovich.

Milton Reduxed

Easy on the soft-spoilers Just let her watch it

YodatheHobbit

Or is the name of a new social media platform. Thanks for reading my Tort! Please like and Retort!

Christian Becker

OK — as it seems it will be The Deer Hunter vs. Kingdom of Heaven, I propose a pact of war-movie gatekeepers. Kingdom of Heaven is a somewhat nice adventure flick (given that the director's cut is a bit better), but for me it's not a war movie! Thus, let’s vote for The Deer Hunter ;-)

Phil Stubblefield

Hear, hear! I second Bill's excellent proposal! 👍🏼👍🏼

Phil Stubblefield

If I may ask, roughly how old are you? This is not a slam, just honest curiosity. FYI, I'm 62. This is my portrait: 👨🏼‍🦲

Phil Stubblefield

I give you four out of five for creativity, Clarence! 👍🏼

MrKsummer7

The Deer Hunter is not a war movie either; it's a drama. Should be in a Drama Poll

Nolofinwe

Great movie walking is great but I can’t stomach De Niro anymore. Seriously lol

Clay F

You have a narrow definition of war genre. Deer Hunter is plainly a war movie. A movie does not have to depict multiple battle/combat scenes or have an extensive setting of a POW camp to be a war movie. War is clearly a definitive aspect of The Deer Hunter. --The Google page for The Deer Hunter gives the genre as "war/thriller." --IMDb lists "war" and "war epic" among the genres. --Wikipedia calls it an "epic war drama." --Rotten Tomatoes gives the genre as "war/drama." --The Hollywood Reporter called it a "war drama." --TV Tropes labeled it a "war drama film." --Metacritic gives the genre as "drama" and "war". --Letterboxd gives the genre as "war" and "drama". SPOILERS "The Deer Hunter (1978) is primarily classified as an epic war drama. It focuses on the psychological, emotional, and physical trauma caused by the Vietnam War on a close-knit group of Pennsylvania steelworkers, rather than focusing solely on combat action.... The film explores the profound impact of war on friendship and, specifically, the PTSD experienced by the characters.... It covers a vast narrative arc from industrial Pennsylvania to the jungles of Vietnam and back, spanning several years.... It is widely considered a (if not the definitive) 'buddy' war film that focuses on the traumatic effects of combat rather than a glorious portrayal of war." War movies can have background. The 51-minute wedding sequence is just that. It is a foundational, hyper-realistic prologue establishing the community, friendships, and innocence of the protagonists before the Vietnam War. Cassie loves background.

Nolofinwe

Kingdom of heaven, Every bit of war movie that final battle is a textbook victory against overwhelming odds in A battle that lasted 17 minutes become that superior force of Saladins . Accomplished by a 17 year old boy is also dying. The Deer Hunter is just too depressing and the acting is overrated except for Christopher Walken . Cassie will love Kelly’s heroes she knows all of the actors it’s full of humor and adventure it’s Right up her alley

To Wa

Hitler finds out he's polling at 9%.

To Wa

"You can't handle the Tort!"

Just Plain Bob

Spot on, Mark. Great movies sometimes don’t lend themselves to repeated viewings as well as merely good movies.

MrKsummer7

I know all about the film, saw it in the theater. I also have the theatrical and director’s cut versions. It may be titled as a war/thriller, but most critics and veterans side with me. The film is a drama, a good one too, but it’s not a war film like the other titles on this list. Better research would have “The Deer Hunter” on a different type of Poll.

Clay F

Again, you have a narrow definition of war genre. And I don't see any indication that "most" critics and veterans side with you. Cassie chose to have a broader definition of war genre than you to include The Deer Hunter in this poll. More than adequate research.

Catherine LW

Suo Gan. Beautiful Welsh lullaby.

Richard Maurer

Stallone couldn’t even keep his helmet on, Prima Donna that he was.

Clay F

The Deer Hunter is definitely a war movie. Has drama but is plainly a war movie. Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro are awesome.

Clay F

Empire of the Sun is definitely a war movie. Most agree. Cassie chose to have a broader definition of war genre than you to include Empire of the Sun in the poll.

MrKsummer7

Clay F, I disagree, and that's okay. The democracy of this country thrives on the liberty to be wrong, right, and to debate it all.

Björn Karlsson

Sisu is great 😃😃😃 Tbh.. lots of great war movies from Finland 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮 Btw.. Sisu needs more points/votes on Popcorn request. Only 3 up votes so far😮‍💨😮‍💨 It's me and Richard M. and some unknown.

Clay F

Ditto. I liked our discussion.

Mark White

Where Eagles Dare is a favourite of mine. As a kid growing up in the 80’s, it was always on at Christmas time for some reason. Now I never go a Christmas without a watch. Young Clint is good but Richard Burton just owns every scene he is in.

Mark White

Stop it with those Negative Waves!

Gray

What a character, I've always liked that Oddball & Flashheart from Blackadder have Woof Woof as a catchphrase lol

Dean Holt

Honestly Oddball is one of my favourite characters in cinema history. But yeah I’ll stop it with the negativity 😂😂

Dean Holt

Clay F, If you like it that’s cool. But if you ask anyone about it I bet pretty much all of them talk about that scene first. I don’t want to go into detail why I’m not a fan as I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’ll let you know after Cassie’s watch it. But Personally it being critically acclaimed or it winning Oscar’s doesn’t really matter to me. Especially the Oscars as they have never really taken Sci-Fi seriously (other that the token award for special effects). And it’s only this year that Horror has been taken a little seriously. But there’s very few best picture winners I like and the one I do like I might have only watched them once or twice.

Mahad Ali

Downfall will win once Steiner attacks.

Astraeos

I'm actually super glad to see Kelly's Heroes do so well My Dad showed that movie to me when I was a kid and I became obsessed for a period of time with it lol. I think Cassie would definitely like that one since its a bit more light hearted for a WW2 movie. Consider it for the future for sure! Young Clint Eastwood, can't pass it up

Astraeos

Yeah that's a classic movie that I'm pretty sure will never, ever get watched even though Cassie would totally love it. Can you tell how much I love polls?

Astraeos

I'm 35 and I've seen almost every movie on both polls lol. I don't think it's an age thing, though I'd definitely not expect the younger Gen Z folks to have any idea about anything at all.

Astraeos

Do you mean Darkest Hour from 2017 with Gary Oldman? If so I 100% agree. That movie gets ignored way too much for how recent it is, and for how amazing it is, and considering it won many awards.

Javier Hernandez

First the name of the film is "TORA! TORA! TORA!" Heartbreak Ridge is a nifty little film about military lives both at home and in combat. It's not so much about the war as it is about the Marines in this unit. Also, a pretty good case study on how young men communicate with each other. It can be harsh but when the time comes, your boys will be there for you. Empire of the Sun is a beautiful film and you get a young "Newsies" Christian Bale, but not really a war film. The Deer Hunter is a classic and at some point you should see it. Robert DiNero, Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken .... but it is a hard watch. The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes are good for a father's day poll but they are kind of satire not actual dramas. Maybe look into Where Eagles Dare or Guns of the Navarone (as quoted in Pulp Fiction) Downfall ... meh

James M

It's a pleasant surprise to see a truly great movie winning a poll.

Junior

I believe Tort! Tort! Tort! belongs in the poll for legal dramas. (Yes, I saw the edit comment; I’m try to be a wisea$$.)

Chris Thom

We don't get Newsies shout outs here that often. So thank you. lol

Chris Thom

Boogie Nights is so good though. Great soundtrack, too.

Chris Thom

I think I know that reference. That happened during the war, or after?

Chris Thom

I do quite like the more literary ones like Apocalypse Now and Thin Red Line. Always a fan of melding genres.

Richard Maurer

Bjorn - many films on the new request list deserve more upvotes - and Sisu is definitely one of them.

Mark White

"Woof!" and "Any girl who wants to chain herself to my railings and suffer a jet movement gets my vote!" Flashheart what a character! and Rik Mayall, what a amazing actor we lost far to early. I would give anything for Cassie to watch at least “blackadder goes forth”

Gray

Classic series and probably more likely than getting her to watch Bottom haha

altfrags

35. i feel like they are American films that were not very popular in EU. i bet they are good

Richard Maurer

She’s a grown woman, she’ll be fine.

Rob G

Downfall is historic like Tora Tora Tora, but with a much different perspective. Some people get turned off by the English subtitles, but you have to appreciate the historical significance of it. The scene showing the murder of the 6 Goebbels children by their mother is so poignant to understanding the Nazi fanaticism.

Richard Maurer

Bob - right, just because a films “great” doesn’t mean it’s a good rewatch. How many people relax with a rewatch of Schindler’s List?

Richard Maurer

Karl Urban is the star of the only Judge Dredd film.

Clarence Newman

Cassie does like a wedding. And she needs a cleanser after Ramsey and Sansa.

Clarence Newman

@altfrags. Damn you and your young knees that work properly. I myself don't know all those films, but Heartbreak Ridge, Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes were required viewing when I was a kid. At the very least, you've gotta treat yourself to Clint in Heartbreak Ridge.

Clarence Newman

My daddy always told me to pick my fights carefully. I don't believe I'll be taking my shirt off for Stallone's Dredd.

Mark White

Currents popcorn requests rankings and current votes in the poll. 431 empire of the sun. Votes 268 656 Deer Hunter. Votes 389 522 Tora Tora Tora. Votes 196 475 Kelly’s hero’s. Votes 254 443 heartbreak ridge. Votes 255 910 flags of our fathers. Votes 208 635 dirty dozen. Votes 322 36 Downfall. Votes 204 Now this is interesting. By all rights the movie with the lowest popcorn requests number (36 Downfall) should have the most votes. Deer Hunter has currently the highest votes by some distance, but yet is only 656 in popcorn requests, second from bottom on this list. This clearly must be a reflection of the new points system on popcorn requests, along with the possibility some Patreons have not made their way over there.

Walter

The Deer Hunter is most definitely a war movie. I personally hate the movie and won't be watching it if it wins. Kingdom of Heaven will be my choice.

McDiesel92

Empire of the Sun has been my #1 pick for my entry every month in the drawing! I would definitely suggest doing with Carly!

Richard Maurer

Mark - I’ve believed the Popcorn Requests lists (new or old), don’t actually correspond to what the patrons want overall. While there’s definitely some overlap list and poll voting, the lists depend on people actually using and also going beyond the first couple of pages when they upvote. Then there’s also the whole disparity between what does well on PR vs what does well on YouTube, but that’s another story.

MertzRocks

I believe you have succeeded!

Clay F

To me, both The Deer Hunter and Kingdom of Heaven are awesome. Hopefully, she will react to both if they finish 1st and 2nd in the final poll. The Deer Hunter is my least favorite of the 3 Vietnam War movies in the AFI Top 100 -- I have more nostalgia for Apocalypse Now and Platoon (saw Platoon in theater in 1986 while in college). However, I've grown to readily appreciate The Deer Hunter. The more cowbell guy did awesome. I think Cassie will like that version of De Niro. There are many aspects about Kingdom of Heaven that I like. I am a sucker for Eva Green but like the performances of many of the actors. I like the story.

Doc Larry/old geezer

@Mark White Where did these numbers come from that you’re referring to — Discord, or the new website that Ben constructed?

Mike Lemon

"Vanilla Ice Cream Problem" - A lot of people find the movies acceptable, but they are not the favorites of many. Planner's page found the "vanilla" (what the most is 'fine' with), Ben's is trying to add in more "blueberry cheesecake" (the 'flavors' some really love). Polls tend toward "vanilla". It's one of the reasons I hate polls so much.

Mark White

Doc, I got those numbers of the new website Ben constructed, popcorn requests.

To Wa

Relieved The Dear Hunter won! Although, Cassie would also enjoy Heartbreak Ridge.

Clarence Newman

I think it's safe to say she would *enjoy* Heartbreak Ridge way more. Dirty Dozen too. Deer Hunter needs to be ticked off though.
