“What are you–”
“FIGHT ME~!” He was stopped in the middle of his questioning by her outburst, her body already glowing with the signature color of the Longinus tier Sacred Gear. That particular action had him scrambling, as his power shot out and restrained her completely, leaving just her face open for movement.
“What are you doing here, Vali? Aren’t you supposed to be under supervision, preferably by your Guardian?” He asked her, exasperated at the manic shine in her eyes that only seemed to increase when he subdued her without any effort instead of actually answering his questions. Hell, he wasn't even sure if she’d heard his question or not.
From what he could tell, her brain was one hundred percent dedicated to fighting people, be it one of the Ten Strongest Beings in the universe, or a Devil so far above her it wasn’t even funny. Both situations seemed to be the same for her, and that was a cause of great concern.
What was Penemue even thinking to let Vali grow up with this mindset? Well, all of that depended on the time of her escape and just how entrenched her current mindset was, so he couldn't blame her for her mindset, but he was certainly going to blame the Fallen for not fulfilling her most basic responsibility of not letting a literal child, Half-Devil as she might be, into an actual bar, full of dangerous beings.
He sighed, eyeing the small Lucifer with exasperation, deciding that he could at least try to talk her out of—
“I heard you fought Uncle Thor! He said you were only pathetic. FIGHT ME!”
The words were stuck in his throat as he looked at her with astonishment. What the hell? How did that news travel so fast? He didn’t clock Thor to be the chatty type, so it must be Vali who must have pestered him during their spars? He did not know just when and how Vali could have met Thor, but he could infer from all his dealings with Odin and Azazel that the Norse and the Grigori were particularly close.
From her previous ramblings, it was evident that she and Thor had sparred and met before, to the point that Vali was comfortable enough approaching Thor and the God of Thunder was confident enough to attack her with a potentially fatal attack, apparently well aware that all the attack would do was put her in a coma and give her head injury, which was somehow fine but ignoring that, he could come to the conclusion that Vali and Thor had sparred, recently, and Thor had mentioned his prowess as being only pathetic.
Wow. That was….a blow to his ego, small as it might be.
Snapping out of his thoughts, he looked at Vali here, who was still trying to get out of his hold, though without summoning her Divine Dividing, probably because Albion knew that Vali’s absorption capability was nowhere near his power output.
“... No.” He denied her request with a single word, and somehow, she acted as if she didn’t hear anything. After a while, he began elaborating, if not for explaining stuff to her, then just to pass the time, as it did not look like Mia was coming here anytime soon.
“Look, kid, I am not going to fight with you. You will die, do you understand? Also, shouldn't you be hiding from someone like me, if you know what I mean?”
Vali’s face turned thoughtful, and for a split second, he had hope that the girl, young as she was, would know about her unique status, as both a Longinus wielder and a Lucifer descendant, but somehow, against all odds, the meatheaded girl refused to think rationally and resumed her pestering.
Mind you, all this while, she was covered almost completely in his Power of Destruction, a situation the majority of beings in the universe would not want to be in.
“FIGHT! FIGHT! FI—Ummphg.”
His power covered her entirely, muffling her shouts, as he was forced to turn his booth into a private one, because this was just becoming more embarrassing by the second. He had felt the gazes increase on him the second he’d caught Vali using his power, and they only seemed to increase as everyone saw her antics, to the point that even he had to concede and turn the booth private, against his wishes, as he did not want to miss Mia.
“Keep Quiet,” he exerted some pressure on Vali to make her understand that he was serious here and not kidding, but apparently, that was a bad move as she only seemed to get excited by that. Sighing at the deeply damaged and odd child in front of him, he let her go as she bounced on the sofa beneath her.
Before she could get a word in, though, he sent a mental ping to Odin about the problematic child in front of him, asking for guidance, because at this point, what could he do? He wanted to stay, in the off chance that Mia came here and he could have an actual conversation with her, but he also did not want to interact with Vali anymore than he had to.
So, what should one Satan Class Devil do when his mind did not work as it should and was stuck in a quagmire?
Consult the wise elders, that’s what!
After all, Odin was, alongside being the God of Magic, also the God of Knowledge and Wisdom. If there was someone who could tell him what to do about this whole thing without taking a wrong step, because Vali’s situation was no less than a minefield.
He felt the mental ping in reply and opened it immediately, expecting to find something useful, only to find—
His thoughts halted as he received a text reply instead of direct thoughts, along with a mental image. He read the message and hesitated to see the mental image.
So? You think I am some kind of midwife? Fuck off for all I care. Don’t disturb me for something like this again.
Sighing, disappointed at the reply, he opened the image and
“No…” A pathetic whimper escaped his lips, as he felt the urge to bleach his eyes, erase his memory, and curse his past self for even trying to think of contacting Odin for something so low on the importance totem pole. Surely, that image was punishment for trying to treat a direct line to one of the most powerful and important gods in the Universe as his personal AI chatbot, and ask him for solutions for all the problems in his life.
“What happened?” He opened his eyes and found himself looking in the painfully earnest eyes of one Vali Lucifer, with the manic fighting urge dimmed but not all gone.
“Nothing.” he waved off her concerns before taking one look outside the booth and deciding that it was enough waiting. Getting up, he placed his hand directly on Vali’s head and pushed her back in the seat, dodging her childish attempts to get the hand removed. “Settle down. I will spar with you, but on one condition only.”
She stopped struggling and looked at him with excitement. Seriously, it was as if fighting and sparring were the only things in her life. “What?”
“You will not pester me for this again.”
“What? No…”
He sighed, feeling far more exhausted than expected. Why had things come to this? He came here to relax and maybe talk to Mia, not get a headache and a half.
___xx___
“Remember,” He looked at Vali, who was currently warming up on the other end of the sparring ring, jumping up and down, her Sacred Gear manifested in the form of two tiny white wings with blue energy overlays, “You won’t approach me again to–”
“And I told you, Uncle,” Vali grinned at him, still jumping up and down, clearly taking great pleasure in seeing his eyes twitching at the nickname, “that I have not agreed to that condition. As far as everyone else is concerned, you are here of your own free will. So, let’s get this started, shall we?”
He remained silent, instead doing a come at me gesture, something that clearly riled Vali up as she shot forward, her hand glowing with a fire spell, as she threw a column of fire at him. He snorted at that; the temperature was barely—
He stopped short as the other hand of the youngest Lucifer shot out, sending a large gust of wind at the fire, amplifying the effect. Hmm, so there was some brain behind all those brain injuries of hers?
He could have just stood there and let it all wash over him, as the spell itself was not capable of harming him. As for his clothes, a thin film of his Power of Destruction would have ensured their safety, but for the spirit of this spar, he raised his hand, fire already blooming within them.
While no Phenex, he was no slouch when it came to Fire magic, especially with all his Demonic Energy reserves thrown behind the spell. Fire destroyed as well, and knowing just what fire was helped him in reducing the energy expenditure a lot, not that he was looking to conserve energy here.
In his young age, he had hoped to emulate Ajuka, as had many other kids, and had begun to better understand the world around him to one day learn to manipulate it at will, but alas, he was nowhere near brainy enough for that. Plus, he had a theory that the Super Devils were not really all that naturally occurring.
A theory he planned to further explore once he had the time and had hit the ceiling, but for now? For now, just learning a bit more about the world and how magic could be used to push nature into action was enough.
These thoughts passed his mind instantly, a habit he was sure was going to be beaten out of him by Thor violently, his fire spell had bloomed and shot at the approaching maelstrom(relatively) of fire, disrupting the spell, only to be hit by a bluish spell.
A “Divide!” rang out in the sparring ring as the spell was halved, but even that was enough to turn Vali black and push her to the edge of the sparring ring, wings glowing brightly, trying to expel all that energy.
Huh. He forgot that this Vali, without the Scale Mail version of Divine Dividing, could not Divide continuously, on top of requiring physical touch to function.
Thinking like that, it seemed like a rather weak Sacred Gear, at least in direct combat, and not at all worthy of the Longnius tier, but the beauty of this particular Gear came later on, when all the other modes and features were unlocked.
Vali would become a true beast then.
But that was then. Now? Now, she was just a chibi Half Devil who was struggling to stay upright, her legs trembling as she was pushed to her limit by a single half hearted spell on his part.
He sighed as Vali’s mental fortitude proved insufficient in front of her physical injuries, and she fell headfirst onto the sparring ring, only to be kept aloft by his magic.
Looking all around the empty sparring ring, he scratched his head and wondered what to do. He had no way of contacting Azazel, and there was no way in Hell he was going to contact Odin for—
“What are you waiting for?”
“Gah!” He did not jump, no matter what anyone said. If proofs were provided, they were doctored with conceptual reality altering magic.
Turning around, he saw Odin standing outside the Ring, looking at him, with none of the attachments he had on his body when he sent that accursed mental image that he was still trying to bleach from his mind.
“What?”
“What are you waiting for? Heal her.”
“Why?”
Odin rolled his eyes at him. “Consider this research on your healing process. A Half-Human, Half-Devil Sacred Gear holder is a prime target for research. It should generate a lot of useful data. Now. get to it!”
