Kuoh, Japan

–Motohama Kenji–

“Are you sure it will work?” He looked up at his nervous mom, smiling in a bid to assure her that things won’t go wrong, and no, he was not going to be tricked into selling his soul. After all, that was something that ancient Devils used to do.

Well, when he first told her that, she had hit him up the head and snapped at him, her nerves still raw from the harrowing experience that day, when he finally told her everything she should know about the supernatural world.

At first, she had refused to believe him, berating him endlessly for trying to lie to her, speaking nonsense, being mentally ill, being possessed by something, being brainwashed into a cult, and many other things.

Pretty hurtful words were thrown out that day, but he tried not to let it go to his heart, as he knew she was far more disturbed than she showed to him. She still thought he could not hear her hyperventilating and crying to herself in the other room, as she tried to come to terms with the fact that the world she lived in, the world she thought she’d built for herself as a safety net for her family, was nothing more than a sham, a flimsy veil.

The realisation that her entire life, the life of her son, could be upended by a simple wave of a supernatural creature, without even the slightest bit of regret on the supernatural’s part. It was even harder to convince her that the only way to avoid that fate and gain some sort of strength and standing was to become so strong and participate in the supernatural community in some way, shape, or form.

That was the only way he was going to get stronger and figure out a way to protect themselves, let alone their community. He still hadn’t gotten around to the fact that all this time, she had been under subtle mind control magic that compelled her to work much harder, sacrifice everything else, all so the company she worked for could eke out a little bit more profit at the cost of their employees.

So, to make sure she did not catch onto his nervousness, he deliberately rolled his eyes, acting silly with her, “Yes, Mom. Just like the last 5 times, I am sure it will work. Even if it doesn’t, the police are not going to break down our door for that failure. Trust me.”

“Yeah, trust you,” She scoffed, her hands wringing together in nervousness, “You couldn't talk to a girl to save your life, and now, you want me to trust you to talk to supernatural beings who have lived for centuries and could easily destroy us.”

"You're thinking of the worst case scenario. It won’t happen. Trust me.”

“I still don’t, but fine. I will go. BUT! I will be back in an hour. So help me–”

“Fine! Now, go, so that I can concentrate. I will be fine, okay?”

She just nodded and left, slamming the door closed with a bit too much force.

Looking at the card in his hand, he sighed before calling out to the woman who worried far too much and was doing everything to suppress her breathing, likely clinging to the door in a bid to hear everything, “I know you’re there!”

He heard her gasping before she bounded down the stairs, of course with the intention of not leaving a sound, but it was an exercise in futility for his enhanced senses.

Shaking his head, he looked at the card, and after flipping it over, he injected a bit of the Light into the card, wary of anything happening but knowing full well that he had no other choice. The only set of instructions on the card was inject magic, which was kind of vague, as he could totally see humans with just a Sacred Gear with no instructions on how to—

His thoughts stopped as he felt the card latch onto what little Light he could use just outside his fingers, continuing to do the same until the card turned red hot. Now, he had already adapted to that, so he had no issue holding onto it. Hell, it would be very bad if he let go of the card, as it would burn the carpet and then leave a mark on the flooring.

Panicking at the possibility that he would have to let go of the card, as Azazel couldn’t have possibly created this to punish the user for something to happen, he was about to jump out of the window, secrecy be damned, when the card stopped glowing red.

Then, it began tugging in a specific direction. He contemplated following the card, but it was going straight up, so he just let the card go.

The card shot up before pausing right next to the ceiling. The glow returned this time, only it was bluish-white this time, projecting something straight down.

He took a step back as the beam of light hit the ground, before flickering and transforming into a tall spectacled woman, with very long purple hair. He did note the extremely shapely assets before moving onto her face, which was set into a neutral frown, as if she was eternally irritated, and that expression had just set onto her face.

Before he could get a greeting done, she replied in a stoic, no nonsense tone, “You are Motohama Kenji, yes?”

He found himself nodding. Yup, this was most definitely her elder sister/teacher aura at work, “Yes.”

She nodded before looking down at something that he could not see, likely her notes on him, though he could guess that it was really sparse as his transportation into this universe was a really recent phenomenon.

“I have here that you are a potential Hero reincarnation/descendant and wish to take admission into Nephilim?”

“Yes?” He replied in a questioning tone because he had hoped that she would already know all of this and more. Why would she ask him something that basic?

She nodded, “Very well. The admission tests are rigorous. You are recommended by the Director, so your spot in the entrance exam is confirmed. A basic background checking service will contact you shortly after we are done. As for the test, it will take place for two months, and during that time, you will not be allowed any contact with anyone else, save for your trainer and fellow hopeful students. Is that clear?”

He hurriedly asked her as he had so many questions about that whole reply, but first, “I am sorry, what do you mean the test will take two months? Also, I can’t even contact my family?”

She fixed him with a look, looking at him as if he was an insect and also too stupid to be human.

Was it weird that it was totally arousing?

“It means exactly as I said. The test will be completely isolated to prevent any uncontrollable variables being introduced. You can contact anyone once you are out of the test. Also, you will have to sign these before you can be given the go ahead.”

The card glowed red this time, the familiar buzz of magic evident in the background, as a number of papers appeared in front of him, falling down before he caught them, going through them.

“Waivers?” He whispered as he went through what had to be a dozen different waivers, with each waiver being of multiple pages.

“Yes. You will have to agree to everything in there before the exam can be conducted. The tests can be…intense.”

Wow. Was that a moan?

He slapped himself mentally for getting distracted from something as important as waiver from maiming, spinal injuries, mental trauma, bisection, PTSD, insanity, and many more….

“Um,” he began, suddenly a lot more wary of the test exam, and what might be taught in the institute if this was an entrance test, “Do these things really happen?”

She looked amused at his reaction, probably the sadist within her loving it, “Well, there is only one way to find out. Why, chickening out?”

He levelled a flat glare at her, “What guarantee is there that I won’t be killed in the test?”

She shrugged, “None. Though, as long as you and all of your limbs are in one piece, we can probably stitch them all together.”

Wow…That was very reassuring. Now, he was very much glad that his mom actually took his advice and was waiting for him downstairs.

After some thinking, he did not chicken out and replied, “Very well, I’ll sign it. What I want to know is, will the test be the same for Asia?”

She ruffled through some papers before replying, despite probably having memorised the much thicker file they must have on Asia Argento, “Uh, Asia Argento, wielder of Twilight Healing, right? Yes, she will have a much different test. Also, she will be approached independently. I was told that you will be the point of contact, as she is currently in a do not approach territory."

“Yes, I can do that.”

“Great.” She snapped her fingers, smirking at him devilishly, “I will see you at the test. Do not disappoint me.”

He shivered at her tone as the card clattered to the ground, the projection disappearing, leaving him standing in the middle of his bedroom, holding onto papers that would have his mother admitted to a hospital, should she read them.

Speaking of mother, he leaned back and shouted once more, “Still hear you!”

She squealed and left once more, entering her bedroom. Shaking his head, he sat on his desk, slamming the pile of papers before taking the first page.

It was full of legalese, but with the power of his average brain, a thesaurus, and reading comprehension, he supposed he could get through the whole thing by dinner time, hopefully.

Next chapter - Azazel POV, Asia talk & then enter the Admission stage.

Since MC will enter the testing stage at the end of the next chapter, I will be posting two chapters at once, so the flow is not broken. I hope that’s fine.

If not, comment below and I will just post regularly as I have done.

Honestly not a bad way to get around the writer's block you had for Motohama's mom
