Movie Review. Hellboy: Cat Scares and Bad Teeth (Patreon)
Content
I watched Hellboy: The Crooked Man, or as I have come to think of it Hellboy: Cat Scares and Bad Teeth.
No intentional or specific spoilers in the review below.
I'll be honest, I do not regret watching it. there are some really neat ideas in there. But I suspect I'd have enjoyed reading the comic more.
It FEELS like the producer and director decided they wanted to do Grindhouse Pulp Folk Horror. And if that's the case, I applaud their bold experiment. In an experiment, a failed result is still data. If someone told me "There's a Grindhouse Pulp Folk Horror movie tonight," I'd think "Oh, fuck yeah." And if I saw this, I'd think "Whelp, as advertised... I just turn out to not like that jumble as much as I thought I would."
Hellboy is by far the most important character in this movie, but he's not the most interesting, and to me, that's a problem in a Hellboy movie. Also I think it suffers from there being 3 previous Hellboy movies with very different tones. This movie makes no effort to warn you about the different tones, and I think I'd enjoy it more if it was the only Hellboy movie I saw. Which isn't the movie's fault, but it IS the producer's fault for thinking this would work.
I don't blame the actors, set builders, or costumers for any of the movies faults. I do think the CGI hurts the movie and its practical effects more than skipping the scenes with it would have.
In a binary digit-based rating system I give it a thumbs-up... but it takes me a LONG time to decide.
