IF a revised Pathfinder First Edition Core Rulebook was created*, and that book presented EXACTLY AND ONLY four EXISTING archetypes for each class;
What four archetypes should be presented for the Fighter?

(*I am not myself currently "working" on a Revised Pathfinder First Edition core rulebook. I AM thinking about such a project, and gathering information, and starting conversations. But it's not in my active projects atm.)

My PERSONAL picks would be: Archer, Pack Mule, Relic Master, and Weapon Master...

I think. It's a TOUGH question!

The Archer, the Shielded Fighter, the Two-Weapon Warrior, and the Unarmed Fighter. That's a bit of a tough choice for me, as it means getting rid of the archetype which embodies the one remaining "classic" ways of fighting, which is the Two-Handed Fighter, but if I can only pick four, that's the one I'd leave out (since the barbarian lends itself to that particular style of combat).

Archer, Cad, Weapon Master, and Phalanx Soldier

Personally, while wouldnt happen, I would say, Archer, Mutagen Warrior, Weapon Master, and CAD.

Yeah I agree, core should have “classic” archetypes that immediately come to mind. However, these should also be reworked. For example, picking two weapon fighter archetype in many ways makes you a worse two weapon fighter as you give up necessary basics such as weapon training.

This is a tough question. I wish I had set the number of archetypes I asked to to 8 instead of 4. Most of which to cover the basics of combat styles. But to answer the question as asked I would go with: Archer, Martial Master, Shielded fighter & Two Weapon Fighter. If you don't go with my suggestion to increase the skill ranks for everybody by 2 then I would replace archer with Lorewarden. To be honest I had to flip a coin to decide between weapon master & martial master.

Even if you had suggested eight, I'd have set it to four, based on my best guess on the maximum amount of room I'll have.

Super tough. But... Crossbowman. Rather simple, a good example of a specialist-type archetype that swaps out versatility for expertise and gets to do a bit of something the core class normally couldn't quite get to. Swarm Fighter. Perfect example of "could work for PCs, but really best for the opposition". Martial Master. Simple to understand. Straightforward mechanically. Huge depth from the feat trees. Skirmisher. My choice for an archetype for the "steal features from another class" type. A few of the other ones I had in mind require other classes (especially Cavalier) to know how they work. EDIT: After reading thread, Cad is a great fit too. Likely in place of Swarm Fighter. Pack Mule and Relic Master were both high in my list but didn't for "not exciting enough to be core"

I would go with the 4 main fighting styles. Archer, Two- Handed, Two-Weapon, and Weapon and Shield
