I would consider older anime to be anything that is 15 years or older, imo. Bebop and Champloo are 1998 and 2004, so still in a similar category of classic anime. Also, the conflict of this episode could have been resolved a lot sooner if any of our party members had a Baby Ruth.

I definitely don't remember Mugen saying THAT, but I've only ever watched the dub before. Absolutely caught me off guard.

Anything before 2008-2010 is old by anime standards because of how techniques changed during that time. That said, visuals and music for this show are really fun. Glad you're enjoying a favorite of mine!

Jet Man

Yeah, the line he says there in dub comes off as a lot more comical. Caught me off guard too.

As a 1997 kid, if you tell me this is from 2004 my mind would react like: "oh this anime is from like a decade ago" but then I realize the year we're in lol. But yeah, seriously speaking, animes from before 2010 feel old because of how they generally look. Anything after to now and probably from now on wont feel any different in general. It's like Videogame graphics, we've already reached a level that's very hard to improve. I don't see animation quality improving in a drastic way in the near future. Hell, you could even say there's more garbage now than before because of how shitty the industry became. I saw an announcement recently of an anime assisted by AI 😅

Here is the thing tho... I remember VERY clearly playing Sega Genesis and thinking "There is no way that games can get better than this" They did. They will again. There are elements of the experience that we don't know yet Wild to think about.

Lixien

Yeah, I dont doubt crazier things will eventually happen. I just wonder if I will live to see it lol but yeah.

Jet Man

These two comments made me think of the anime with the main character that obsessed over Sega Genesis games. 😅

I don't think there's more garbage now, every decade was flooded with shit in every medium and with time we only remember the good stuff. Someone will say the exact same sentence in the future, the 2020's were soooooo much better than today in the 2040's anime wise... Also, only a fraction of the animes were imported to the west at the time, so what we had was curated. We have way more choice now, so of course it includes the shitty stuff. About AI though, you're right it's pretty scary.

HaukurE

Not old but Goonies was still a childhood film lol

Lixien

I mean, I'm aware they were mediocre anime before too. I'm refering more to the fact that more animes are being produced compared to before because ''we have to make more and more anime'' aka more shitty anime available. I don't doubt that there's similar or more shows that are good being made today but that also applies to the bad stuff. But yeah, generally the perceived quality has been the same for a while. Realistically, no one really checks all the anime being made so the amount doesn't really matter too much.

I think 2010 is a big turning point for anime. A lot of 2012-13 anime resembles what we have today in 2025 than it does to to mid 2000s anime. The aesthetic, vibe, animation techniques and use of CG and a big one of course was that this was a time before everything was in HD; really makes you nostalgic for that reason.
