We are 2 episodes in and I can already feel that this is going to be the Anime that I am thinking about for months after it is done...very thankful we have this media to consume and contemplate.

Started to watch this after finding out you were going to. I won't regret. It's sooooo beautiful. Kinda vinland saga vibes with how people thought on old times vs what it's just automatic nowadays.

Anime with brain protein comes every once in a while, and it's hard to spot them since they tend to be the least popular. The new Ghost in the Shell series coming out next year would be something to keep an eye on, and is receiving a little bit of hype. There are also the older series as you already know.

I've watched many anime but i dont think any have been as high on the brain protein scale as this one, this show had me thinkin about stuff for a while

I've read on X that Nanami's VA was so in love in Nowak on the manga, so he ask to do his voice if one day an anime will be on production.

Ken Shufflebottom

This show is pretty amazing. The kind of storytelling that almost leaves you not wanting to watch more cuz you won't know what to do when it's done.

Alesta

The ED Yorushika uses mandolin in a few of their songs

Man these series that are more grown up and touch sensitive and serious issues are so good. They feel so deep and meaningful, I'm writing this just after the opening started and I already love this anime lol. It hooked me with just that sequence of the guy drawing the solar system.

Uschi

“What a great contribution to sound.” I’ve never heard such a thoughtful compliment.

Lixien

For me it's a combination between Vinland Saga and Frieren (in some of its themes)

Jet Man

As this series progresses, I'd be curious to know which mercenary antagonist you find to be more complex/compelling: Vinland Saga's Askeladd or Orb's Nowak.

Lixien

I like how you reacted exactly the same way like you smelled some good food in both episodes as soon as the Opening plays lmao

''I dont know how many anime are like this'' oh boy oh boy, let me tell that in the last like 10 years there might not be a single show like this. If we want more of the brain teasing shows I think we have to look for older stuff

Orb is amazing, the series gives you dread and inspiration all in one. I think a good recommendation for you would be Monster (2004), since you're interested in historical fiction/philosophical anime. It's set in 1980s/1990s Germany and Czechoslovakia. Though, the music isn't nearly as good as Orb

HaukurE

I love the monster soundtrack lol

Anime eras are so vastly different from one another. We went from bushy eyebrows manly men (this is when jojo parts 1 -3 came out, 1970's - 1980's) that featured no women, to the complete opposite and featuring only girls.. in highschool (moe era :X 2005 - 2013, steins;gate time) and many more (mechas used to be the only thing for years but not anymore, shonen is still going strong, etc. etc.). In this current time I think it's mostly isekais but I think we're at the tail end of it and transitioning to something different.. anime feels more western now. All of these phases have a few good shows and many bad ones lol. Also these are my personal notes, nobody refers to anime eras there's nothing agreed upon but I don't think anyone would disagree with what I say although the years are vague (moe is still around, a new gundam, a mecha anime, just released, etc.)

Sk dragon

I love the op it’s top tier but the ending is so good too

Hermit

Thank god Isekai is becoming less popular. There's definitly some good shows, but the amount of lazy slop was insane.

Lucipurr

What a great luxury Tony's anime consumption right now is, orb, Psycho pass and samurai champloo at the same time🔥

Uschi

Monster would be a dream.

It’s not anime, but one Western animated series that hit me on the same level as Orb is Scavengers Reign. Honestly, it might even leave more open to interpretation. It doesn’t hold your hand, but it also doesn’t get lost in its own ambiguity. It trusts you to sit with the world it builds and figure things out without over-explaining or trying to be clever for the sake of it. Visually, it’s unreal—every frame feels like it belongs in a gallery. But beyond that, it asks some tough, essential questions about how humans relate to nature, survival, and each other. It’s the kind of storytelling that gets under your skin without shouting its message. Twelve episodes, about 25 minutes each—easy to get through, but it stuck with me in a way most shows don’t. It honestly shifted my expectations for what animation can be—especially outside of Japan. There’s real depth here, if you’re paying attention.

Obviously, tastes differ, and since I have a degree in English lit, I’ll admit I might be a little skewed on my tolerance for ambiguity, so take that part with a slight grain of salt. But if you’re curious to get a feel for whether it might be up your alley, I’d recommend checking out the original short that inspired the series—"Scavengers." It’s about 8 minutes long and available on YouTube via Charles Huettner’s channel (he’s one of the creators behind Scavengers Reign). It doesn’t spoil anything major—most of what’s in it gets covered in episode 1 anyway—and while it’s a bit rougher and completely dialogue-free, it’s a great pitch for the tone and overall vibe of the show. Might give you a clearer sense of whether it’s something that could click for you and if you could see yourself reacting to it on here at some point, without relying solely on the trailers or committing to a full episode upfront.

I've been pretty invested in your anime journey and seeing that you like orb and vinland saga, its pretty clear you like thought provoking and more mature themes. I'd personally recommend ping pong the animation, really unique animation and very nice writing. Honestly quite underrated and seems right up your alley.
