Hey Folks!

As always, here is my latest video, ad-free, a night early for my Patreon folks <3

In the last week alone I got 6 different comments on YouTube with questions about adopting a rescue dog for service work. And while I know this may be a touchy subject for those of you with amazing service dogs that also happen to be rescues, know that this video is not directed at you or your service dog, but specifically directed at those who are at the start of their service dog journey. My goal with all the videos I make is to help the most people have the best chance of raising and training a successful service dog that can provide them with support for their disability.

With that all being said, this video answers the questions:

  • Can I adopt a rescue dog for service work?

  • Should I adopt a rescue dog for service work?

  • How should I go about adopting a dog for service work?

I would love to hear your thoughts on my presentation of this topic in the YouTube comments section. Do you have a different experience? Did I miss something? Feel free to let me know as I'll definitely be checking the comments section!

And if you haven't watched this video on evaluating a dog for service work, this would be a good compliment to the one above: https://youtu.be/I_oC3hCRYDQ?si=NfN2hzCqK4Zl6bKB

EM

what a great point about looking at breed specific rescues! thanks for sharing!

While I love my Belgian Malinois to pieces, you are 100% correct about wanting it to work out too much. I looked past ALLLLL the red flags thinking I could train these things out of him (keeping in mind he's literally my first dog). Have I done well, considering? Hell yeah, I'd like to think so. We can go off leash on our street, he does ok in my friend's truck, he's doing better with going for walks without tail tucking, attempting to flee, and bark-whining. Will he ever be able to do full public access? Maybe. But I let go of that expectation awhile ago. Instead, I'm working on maybe training search and rescue, or getting his therapy dog certification, as he's really friendly with people so long as I'm not anxious. However, he does great at home for tasks, and has even learned to detect dizzy spells before I notice them. I will work at it, but I'm no longer putting that pressure on him, which has actually been working out great.

Sounds like he's wonderfully helpful at home, and the reality is, the majority of the time, most of us are at home! I know for me at least, a lot of Whip's tasking happens in the house.

I'm having to work with what I have. Getting a different dog is not an option at the moment. Thankfully I don't need a SD all the time. My 2.5 year old ACD cross rescue which I've had since he was 5 mos old. I wasn't expecting to need a SD so didn't train him on basic commands as well as I should have. He's fairly well behaved out in public, but I do need to work with him a lot more.

Absolutely love this!!!! This is one of the most frequently asked questions, alongside “What breed do you recommend?” You did an amazing job consolidating all the information into one place. Your explanations show that our goal isn’t to hurt anyone’s feelings or make things harder, but quite the opposite. We aim to set owner-trainers up for success as much as possible!

DOGGY•U

LOL What breed do you recommend is on my list for the next few months ;) Thank you - these comments mean so much <3 I am always nervous releasing this type of video, so I appreciate that it hit the right notes in the way I intended.

DOGGY•U

If they're a really good fit for the job, then definitely work with the dog you have! It's when people try to fit a square peg into a round hole, or push a dog to do things they aren't comfortable with or a good fit for that it becomes problematic for the dog, themselves, and potentially the public and other handlers.

Thank you for this great video explaining the pros and cons of both! I was super lucky in the past with my first "unicorn" rescue. I tried to repeat my success with another rescue and failed miserably. This time we chose to be patient and take our time by going with a responsible breeder who had a history of producing other successful service dogs. My current puppy is one of three from his litter who are all training for various service dog work

DOGGY•U

Thanks for sharing Deborah. So glad you started with a unicorn so you knew how amazing it *can* work out. Wishing you the best with your new pup!
