Once the dog can do a nose-to-hand touch, one thing I like to train is a nose target behavior off my body that can eventually be used to push doors and drawers closed, press buttons etc.

That behavior starts with training them to touch a target stick. Here, I use a large pancake spatula as the target. This is because he literally bit everything else I presented him, and the large surface of the spatula makes it less likely for him to bite it.

You'll notice he sometimes doesn't hit the flipper part exactly. I can refine that over time. Right now I just care that he touches it with his nose and doesn't bite it :)

I have to start with target sticks. We already work on foot targets & do some body work.

Brilliant work-around for the biting issue!! Great idea, using a spatula for a “touch” gesture to jump-start closing doors. I tried Post-Its but they got soggy. Later I hit on putting a tiny, invisible smear of peanut butter on the spot on the door I wanted him to target, and that worked great! He’s a door-closing fanatic now. It helped for teaching the “Paint” trick too. A tiny smear of peanut butter on the (paper) canvas got him touching it. Then just had to teach him to hold his special T-shaped paintbrush handle (using reverse luring) and make the same gesture. An artist was born.😄 Love seeing these older vids of baby Denver!💕

Would it be cheating, Laura, to put a tiny smear of safe peanut butter on the middle of your spatula?

When do you add a cue for this and what word would you use to cue? Just the same as touch?

DOGGY•U

I just use touch - but you could definitely use a different cue if you wanted to! You would add the cue once you had a solid loop of dog touches target stick, mark, feed, dog immediately comes back to touch target stick. You'd insert the cue right before they touch and then work it back in the loop.
