In this Deep Dive you'll see the progression for teaching rear foot targets (dog puts rear feet on something) as well as teaching the backup using the rear foot target.

This is Part 1 of 2. Part 2 will happen in May 2025 where we'll go over backing up with handler, backing out of tight spaces, blocking and maybe some other fun things.

Happy Training!

Tried training this today and I think he got a bit confused and offered a front foot target multiple times, since we’ve used the same platform for a front foot target before (although we’re using his bowl upside down now for that so that he can pivot better). Any ideas on how to distinguish one from the other in a clearer way before adding the command? I’m in the sticky target phase rn for both

So if you’re struggling with this, to start, don’t let him make the mistake. So when you toss the cookie away, as he’s coming back, immediately place the cookie in such a way that when he comes back the cookie is being placed right where his head needs to be so that his back feet are on the platform, not the front, mark, and feed a second cookie there before tossing the next behind. That should fix the issue pretty quickly.

@Laura he's a big guy, 125# mastiff not great with rear as u figure, he has back up...mostly... He can get up on concrete circular stone and turn his rear both ways, will lift rear paws up but gets stuck if I tell him back and I'm in front of him not along side of him. .. just can't seem to get him to figure out how to go thru this process... I'm a subscriber but for some reason .. wondering if I'm not logged in correctly.. anyway need to send you this in messages for QnA...I'll try reposting here also. It's really prob a verbal or QnA question

It sounds like you haven't made the rear foot target sticky enough. I'd spend some more time with him being able to independently being able to backup to the rear foot target.
