"Yes, well, that's democracy for you." I won't say that's my choice for the absolute funniest moment of Classic Who (that's in a Six story) but definitely up there.

Quite the trippy second half of this story. Yes, the whole concept of Castrovalva was most fascinating. A highlight is that given the Doctor is out of it, combined with Adric being captive, the ladies were doing. some proverbial and literal heavy lifting in this story. It is intriguing seeing the Doctor spend the time channeling his past selves before committing to who his fifth self will be. I love how you caught the Master under his disguise which included the very curious double hat; that should be a big tip-off as no sane man wears hats like that. Further helping is that the old man is played by Neil Toynay, and when you rearrange the letters, you end up with Tony Ainley. Coincidence? I think NOT. I see your one point of expressing the desire for greater focus on the people, more specifically a greater showcase of when they gain more autonomy. All in all, though, this was a delightful reaction you had, Jess. I reflect some in that I’ve had delightful sci-fi reactions from you to look forward to on my birthday these last few years. The last two years being Star Wars; first the C-3PO and R2-D2 off on a grand, whirlwind, galactic adventure two-parter in Clone Wars, then last year, the Jack Black/Lizzo/Christopher Lloyd episode of The Mandalorian, both the episodes and your reactions being a complete gas. Now this year, I have your reaction to the concluding half of Five’s first hour which was very delightful. A very nice thing to see your introduction to a new Doctor on my birthday. Even if said Doctor does happen to be in my lower half of the rankings as I said, this was still very delightful, Jess, thank you.

That is a particularly good moment, yes. Maybe not number one funniest moment of Classic Who, but definitely up there, as you say.

We also just got a trailer for the Sandman spinoff Dead Boy Detectives, which looks pretty promising.

"Who could it be?", sesskasays, about the Portreeve in the reaction to "Castrovalva" Well, that would be the Portreeve played by "Neil Toynay" - which, as Thomas pointed out, is an anagram of "Tony Ainley" - a nice trick to avoid the plot spoiler - but you saw through it! BTW: the title "Portreeve" has a similar root to the title "Shirereeve" being the manager of a Port rather than the manager of a Shire. "Shirereeve" gives us our modern word "Sheriff". Nice to see Michael Sheard back again playing Mergrave the doctor in Castrovalva. We last saw him as Lowe in "The Invisible Enemy" - the nice base commander who gets taken over by the giant prawn, but most memorably as Laurence Scarman in "Pyramids of Mars" whose was killed by the controlled body of his brother. As mentioned in the "edit" comments, the name "Castrovalva" was taken from a print by M. C. Escher of a view of a town at the top of a cliff (it does look quite like our Who Castrovalva) which in turn was taken from a real village at the top of a cliff in Italy. And there is a bit of Escher-weirdness in the views of the collapsing world so it all ties together. The young girl who helps the Doctor with his counting was played by the niece of Caroline John who played Liz Shaw in the first 3rd Doctor series. We get to see how the celery get onto the costume - important for those that like to color match. I suppose we're meant to consider all the occupants of the town as mere creations of the Master/Adric's block transfer computation and not think there were "real" deaths here. But they were delighful occupants and it still make you sad. "Which is the quickest way out of here?" (They all point in opposite directions) "Well, that's democracy for you.", The Doctor, "Castrovalva"
