Two interesting facts that are not spoilers: 1.) Peter Davison hates celery, its why they cut the scene so quickly, so he could spit it out. 2.) This is the only serial where the incoming Doctor's post-regeneration story was not shot chronologically (ie: after Logopolis), this script wasn't ready yet, so they shot the next serial first, to not waste shooting days. It meant that Davison already had to know what his Doctor was going to be like, and then build into that in Castrovalva.

Matthew practically took himself out of the story after a session with some booze that didn't eventually agree with him and leading to him disappearing behind a tree and feeling rather sorry for himself - much to the amusement of his fellow cast. Castrovalva is based on a lithograph by M C Escher called Relativity, very appropriate for a Doctor Who story, although the name is the title of another of his lithos of a hilltop town. "The architectural structure seems to be the centre of an idyllic community, with most of its inhabitants casually going about their ordinary business, such as dining. There are windows and doorways leading to park-like outdoor settings." Although the first to be broadcast of the season, this was the fourth story to be filmed.

Brodie Vickers

"You know, I loved being you. Back when I first started at the very beginning, I was always trying to be old, grumpy and important like you do when you're young, and then I was you. And I was all dashing about and playing cricket and my voice going all squeaky when I shout and I still do that! The voice thing, I got that from you!" - Ten 'Time Crash'

Graeme Wood

Some of the inspiration for Castrovalva came from the paintings of M C Escher..

I do feel Matthew’s pain. There’s been an occasion or two where I’ve over imbibed, leading to feeling sorry myself, though I’ve yet to disappear behind a tree. Usually, coffee and orange juice get you back to feeling relatively right as rain. I believe I’ve read about the connection between this story and Escher’s lithograph.

No? That’s next week, you got part 1/2 of Castro last week, so 3/4 is this week’s episode.

Escher was one of the artists that I studied at art college. I had only just left when this was broadcast, so it was a "Whoa!" moment for me when I saw the title in the Radio Times for that week! I still have the book of lithographs that I bought with some of my grant money.

Thanks for another great reaction. I'm glad you really liked this one. A weird story for sure. My 10 year old self was utterly Bamboozled that the Portrieve was really the Master & I did suspect you'd rumble his game! Collectively this story along with the previous 2 came as part of a 3 story box set for their DVD releases. They're titled 'New Beginnings' which I find very fitting. New Master, New Companions, New Doctor. See you next time for a New Story!

I believe that Matthew's bilious hangover was the day they shot the final scene of the story. He does look a bit green around the gills as they return to the TARDIS. The jog can't have helped.

Christopher Warner

In one interview Mathew claimed they had to tint the footage green to match his face. I don’t believe it… not that JNT didn’t tell him as much…but it makes a good story.

Josef Schiltz

Hah! As I said, serves him right! He should have known better and especially when the cast and crew are relying on him to turn up for filming!
