Something cool is that the character revealed at the end of the episode as The One Who Waits, is voiced by the voice actor from the Fourth Doctor story. He's aged 92. It is amazing that they brought him back for this.

Ryan

After he voiced the Beast in Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, which could have some interesting implications.

If this episode is any indication, we are in for a doozy of a finale. I’m reminded of how Davies likes his event finales, which contrasts with Moffat’s far more intimate character driven finales, which are still my preferred type of Doctor Who finales, and Chibnall’s we’re throwing ALL the shit at the wall and see if anything sticks finales. Now I say that, and Davies does keep the finales buoyed by a strong plot. My observation is more thinking that it was a while back now since we had Davies’s finales; it took a moment to reacclimate. I did hear about the returning heroic characters, though I didn’t know when they would appear, save for knowing that Kate was going to be in this as that got spoiled. Thankfully, it’s one of the first things in the episode. The positivity of the Doctor, Ruby, and the others was just a wee bit too much, because we all know, as you said, that there will be shit. I concur. A shared concern of Mrs. Flood having nefarious intentions regarding Cherry. I like how you were instantly suspicious and resolved to keep an eye on her. The stomach sank when Cherry asked if she could trouble Mrs. Flood for a nice hot cup of tea, and Mrs. Flood having the response, “You can trouble me for a nice hot cup of shut the hell up!” Magnificent, Jess, to hear you say that if any harm comes to Cherry Sunday, you will find a way to launch through the screen and Mrs. Flood will be choked the fuck out by thine own hands. I think I’d pull up a front row seat for that one as to address your comment, I did not find your threats of violence unbecoming. Carla’s scenes were scenes that got you right in the heart, as was the scene of Kate reminiscing with the Doctor about the Brig. Talking about Mel, (Or Mels, I’ve heard and like both.) she is tremendously wonderful in this episode. It’s quite sweet how your prediction about Mel is that, per your description, you feel like you are going to love her. When you meet her. Again. Before. And yes, Jess, I knew what you meant, no worries. That wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey ball; it fries your brain like an egg. You do feel bad for the Colonel. I love how Kate has that moment where she’s not unreasonably angry with the Doctor about that, yet she sets that aside when danger is at hand, well shown when Ruby falters that moment when the Doctor gives the one order, Kate instantly tells her to get the lead out. Man does Millie break your heart with the scene where she can’t see her mother’s face. I also was highly skeptical that Susan was THE Susan as it seemed overly obvious. True, there was a similar thing with Missy when it got speculated early on that she was the Master. My thought when the idea was told to me being, “I thought about that, but it seems a little too obvious.” Of course, Missy was the Master, and Michelle was excellent, but here, this is Susan we’re talking about; a character whose return has been so anticipated that if you are going to tackle that, you don’t put that much blood in the water drawing fans attention and then be somewhat casual about it. You make that more of a bigger event. I do share and respect how you don’t aggressively theorize. My brother and I are the same where we occasionally think what could happen/certain questions occur. Midway through the episode, one such question occurred. I know the one focus is on the mystery of Ruby’s mother, and that’s what she was trying to find out when we first met her. But who’s the father? Or is this a “use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life.” type deal like the Emperor may or may not have done with Anakin? Or did the show already address Ruby’s father and I just don’t remember? In any case, we now know who the big bad is. And I recall, Jess, that you jested that the One Who Waits would be Amy, and I’m sure the Doctor would have liked to have seen her again. Alas, to the Doctor’s horror, and to the Whovians’ delighted and/or horrified surprise, that’s not the case. Quite the intense scene of the revelation of the identity of the One Who Waits, specifically the revelation that somehow, Sutekh returned. Your reaction to that, Jess, was everything. It’s been a minute since last we saw him. The Doctor surely has his work cut out for him, especially if, as you mentioned, Daffodil is involved, appreciated that niche joke, by the way. Thank you for the great reaction, Jess.

So, I very likely never would have noticed Susan Twist having all these guest roles if the fans on Twitter hadn't made such a big deal about it meaning some kind of Susan Twist twist. And once that talk started, my biggest hope was that there wouldn't be any Susan Twist twist, and that was the real Susan Twist twist. RTD even did a commentary early on where he claimed that he just really liked her in Wild Blue Yonder so much that he kept using her, which absolutely no one believed, and I have to imagine he wasn't really expecting anyone to, and just saw this as a required part of the dance. As for the real big reveal here...eh. I saw Pyramids of Mars years ago and barely remembered Sutek, and I have to imagine anyone who happened to not be familiar with that single story from fifty years ago reacted like Korath being introduced to Star Lord. Though after all the fuss about this being the new "Season 1" that was specifically designed for new people to hop on blind, I very much respect the trolling.

I never bought the Susan thing just because, even with regeneration being a thing, there's no way in hell that the fans will accept her returning and not being Carole Ann as long as she's still with us. And that becomes especially true now that she's the only original cast member left, even if that wasn't the case when this was filmed.

Thomas Corp

A similar thing happened where I didn’t much notice the Susan Twist thing until after the Maestro episode as, like you said, the internet chattered away about that, so when she popped up again in the landmine episode, you knew something was up. And even then, I tried not to comment about it as Jess didn’t say much about it, though I noticed that she noticed. I reiterate that it felt way too obvious that Susan would be THE Susan, and as I see you commented, if it was going to be her, you would get Carole Ann to reprise the role as she is the last one still with us. She could still appear, but the thought was her return would be separate from the Susan Twist business. The Sutekh reveal is definitely for the older fans. I would imagine fans unfamiliar with the older story would have the type of reaction that I have when Mom puts on the Grammys and upon seeing pretty much anybody on that these days, I say, “Yeah, I don’t know who that is. I’m not being funny, I physically have no idea who that is.” The trolling is much respected, I’ll tell you that much. Matches the trolling Ian McDiarmid did when everyone grilled him if he was going to be in Obi-Wan, (Said trolling incidentally told me that he would be in it.) specifically, the one time he was at a convention, he got asked and he trolled the crowd by saying, “If you’re expecting the Emperor to appear... soon... in the flesh... Don’t get your hopes up.” Saying this new season would be completely accessible to new viewers is great trolling in light of the Sutekh return.

Another very enjoyable reaction, thank you!

I’m still holding out hope that Ms Flood is the Rani for season two. They mentioned her for a reason. I think they might’ve gotten the rights to use her on the downlow with that Disney money. Lol.

Oh loved your reaction to the reveal of who this villain was and also loved the Mara NameDrop

tonright

Not me subbing to a YouTuber on Patreon for an entire month and for the first time ever for literally this one video lol I was so excited when I saw the reveal knowing you'd be one of the channels who would know who this was!

I loved Mel here. But you just know that were she still around Mel's part here would have absolutely been Sarah Jane and Liz would have absolutely killed it.

I only just managed to recognise Susan Twist reappearing by her eyebrows which my brain finds really memorable for some reason. Never before has a character so strongly proven that my brain relies almost entirely on silhouette to recognise people. Were it not for the eyebrows, which made me recognise her instantly, I wouldn't have recognised her until this episode

It's Mel, short for Melanie. "Mels" was the River incarnation that grew up alongside Amy and Rory

Josef Schiltz

It's nice to see Bonnie as Melanie Bush, from Pease Pottage in West Sussex, again. I haven't seen her stories for years and yet still remember her name and from where she hails. Aren't days in the TARDIS like crazy paving.

Josef Schiltz

Thing is, what I've found interesting, is that The Vlinx has been sitting there like a visual echo of the seated and entrapped Sutekh in the Pyramid of Mars all along. Another visual echo was Mrs Flood seated outside her house with a blanket over her knees.

Really looking forward to seeing what Jess will think of this Doctor. Of course, she has seen little clips of him and, so far, looks positive! - Power Of The Doctor.
