Arguably the worst season opener in all of classic Who, awful story.

"Friend or enemy, it's a distinction that's lost on the Silurians, I assure you. To them you're all the same. Ape-descended primitives. An evolutionary error they obviously mean to correct.", The Doctor, "Warriors of the Deep" Oh, dear. The story is quite a come-down from last time's glorious "The Five Doctors" special, isn't it? But there are a few things to like about it - not many, but a few. I think the basic concept is ok (Johnny Byrne had previously written "The Keeper of Traken" and "Arc of Infinity") - two superpowers under a cold-war standoff with agents subverting the base security, which all turns out to be overshadowed by the much greater threat of the reptile take-over. That's a fine story concept. And it's nice they brought back the 3rd Doctor monsters - I was very happy when I first saw them in this episode. BUT, COME ON, PEOPLE! The original Silurian's third eye was used to create holes in walls or used as a weapon - NOT to blink to indicate who is talking - they're not Daleks! And the sets are bright and white and generally clean - quite a look! But, fundamentally not what the writer envisioned. He imagined a dark, damp, degraded base (think "Alien") with lots of atmosphere and shadows where a Myrka could hide. But, oh my, we come to the Myrka! It's sad. It was finished so late that the paint was still wet. The performers were known for playing a pantomime horse in a sitcom so they were experienced performers. They tried - but ... Now, I'm not dissing the use of a pantomime horse where it can be appropriate. For example, Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings", a huge Oscar award-winning film, used a pantomime horse to stand in for a real pony when they had to film high up in the mountains or in soggy marshes where they couldn't take a pony. But they only used the prop in background and in long shots. But Classic Who doesn't wimp out doing that - the Myrka is a Who monster - shown in a mostly bright set - what could be worse? Well the bendy-foam base doors are a candidate for worse. "What have you been eating?", Tegan, "Warriors of the Deep" A nice joke reprise for the line in the scene before. Yes, this story is a come-down. Almost anything would have been. I love Who! I do try to look past the occasional obvious things - but ... [sigh] ... ouch. "Brave heart, Tegan.", The Doctor, "Warriors of the Deep"

This story was Michael Grade’s go-to example for why the show deserved to be cancelled. Total asshole, but you truly can’t blame anyone who accepted his argument.

Perhaps, but what I cannot accept is that arseholes reasoning being Classic Who was cheap and ridiculous looking - yet HE was the one in charge of the purse strings and could easily have allocated more budget to JNT, instead of spunking it on such crap as 'Eldorado'. One could almost be swayed into cracking a joke about stereotypical yids and their love of money and/or refusal to spend any....
