In Wil Wheaton's unfortunately truncated episode reviews from a few years ago, he described a certain scene in a later episode (don't worry, no specifics are spoiled here) as "Across America, the fans applaud as an episode that was verging on The Last Outpost territory suddenly has redeeming value." Which tells you pretty much everything about this episode's reputation, which all boils down to its newly introduced species the Ferengi. In the original series, the Klingons had been pretty obvious stand-ins for the Soviets, and with that government in obvious decline in the wake of Chernobyl, Roddenberry decided they couldn't work anymore as the main antagonistic race for the new show. So what he came up with was a new race who embodied everything he hated about American society in the '80s, the decade which would get its defining quote in a movie the year after TNG started, "Greed is good." And you can see fleeting glimpses here of how that could have worked, as Daimon Taar, cardboard villain though he is, provides a decently intimidating presence that the heroes have to use their wits to defeat. But then there's the other Ferengi, who if you believe Armin Shimmerman (playing a random Ferengi here in one of several guest roles prior to his regular role as Quark on Deep Space Nine) were literally given the direction "Act like excited hamsters." Combined with the goofiness of what was apparently supposed to be their signature weapon with the energy whips, the episode immediately destroyed any chance of the audience taking the Ferengi seriously as they did with the Klingons, and in their following appearances you'll clearly see the writers going through the awkward, painful process of finding what other role they could play now that they'd been introduced as such a big part of the setting.

Ambassador Soval to the Vulcan Science Directorate regarding initiating first contact with Ferenginar. "Maybe we should allow some other advanced warp civilization to try first? . . . The Andorians for example?"

Oh, yeah, even if we have an episode that you, I, or any of us are well familiar with, it will still be a delight to share it with you, hear your thoughts, and like you said, see how opinion of the episode has changed if at all. If nothing else, Jess, I share the excitement you have of journeying through Next Gen. Now to today’s episode. This is the first time we have seen the Ferengi following their first being mentioned previously. Rather interesting to hear you say your favorite Star Trek character is a Ferengi, and yes, not tremendously difficult to ascertain whom you are referring to on that. And when you mentioned that, I noted, “Funny you should say that, Jess, considering Armin Shimmerman IS in this episode, though I don’t think he’s playing your favorite here, nor is he retconned into being said favorite.” I never did figure out which one Arnim was playing here, nor Tracey Walter despite my attempts to figure that out. Throughout the scenes with the Ferengi, I was saying, “Which one of you “Pygmy cretins”, as Worf called you, is Bob?” The intent here was for them to become the recurring villains, ala the Klingons or Romulans, which didn’t quite pan out as anticipated. As I see Ryan said, rather than the Soviet analogy of the Klingons, the Ferengi were meant to be a stand-in/critique of certain prevalent attitudes and beliefs of eighties America as was succinctly summarized in the movie line, “The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works.” A line in a movie which incidentally was released months after Black Monday, savor that irony for a moment. A well-conceived idea that as mentioned, didn’t quite work, though ultimately as I recall, the Ferengi evolved into Hondo and/or Azmorigan style villains with varying degrees of effectiveness, threat-wise. And as you mentioned, you do enjoy Ferengi episodes, they’re not dull if nothing else, so it all works out in the end. I agree that the more enigmatic nature of the first half of this episode was the stronger aspect of it, and yeah, it could have played out more. The resolution of the episode, I likewise concur with your assessment of it. And I most certainly concur with your assessment of how Tasha would get so tired of the recurring reaction to her being, “A WOMAN who fights!? What devilry is this!?” Then there’s when the Ferengis comment on Tasha being “forced” to wear clothes, I went, “Sorry, what now?” The look on your face when you heard the line was great. When they kept harping on that, I found myself saying, “I don’t even know where to start with expressing my displeasure on that one.” Another small highlight was the rather sweet moment that Picard and Beverly had, and again, I loved your reaction to it. This was another enjoyable Next Gen reaction, Jess, thank you.

This starts off well enough, and I like the set-up; but it all falls flat toward the end. A combination of: the Ferengi being physically not up to par with (e.g.) the Klingons (a tactful way of saying that they're on the shorter side); the villain not being a villain, but a benevolent old chap; and the episode just sort of...stopping. Some amusing scenes help keep it entertaining.

You can tell the writers started running out of ideas for the last 10 minutes of this episode. The Portal guardian reminds me of the 11th Doctor on Trenzalore just before he gets his new regeneration cycle.

I think Quark (not that Armin Shimerman is playing him in this episode) is a great character. That being said it surprises me that he is your favorite character in ALL of Star Trek. Did I hear that right? Interesting. This is an ok episode, nothing to write home about : ). Looking forward to next week's reaction. Also, good luck to your Jets this year. Should be a good one for them. Break out some Jets apparel for some of your reactions and show that Jets pride. : )

Nog is the best Ferengi. Fight me on it.
