The title suggesting that Daryl will be the lead, and that it is set in France was about the extent of my knowledge going into this as well. Correction: I did know of one additional cast member in advance. I’ll get to that momentarily. In any event, I look forward to sharing the show with you, Jess. It’s also nice to hear you’re getting good vibes, seasonal-wise. A most interesting first episode, I concur. It is great that we just open with Daryl adrift, in a “How did we end up here?” type deal. I’m with you on not minding the vagueness of how Daryl ended up where he was. One, as you noted, Daryl is quite the lone wolf and is rather taciturn even at the best of times. And two, I assumed this would be an overarching storyline of the season learning the nature of Daryl’s predicament. The ending scene does shed some light on it. Were I in the one lady’s place, I’d have to fight hard not to shoot the one guy who said they took care of Daryl by throwing him overboard and is presumed dead. It really could not have been that hard to slit his throat and ascertaining his death prior to giving him the heave ho off the ship. Then again if they did, there’d be no story. I liked the convent set-up. I very much enjoyed Clémence Poésy as Isabelle. She is the previously mentioned cast member that I knew about. I heard a while back that Clémence would be in this. And it sounded agreeable as what I’ve seen her in, she’s great. I liked her scene where her and Daryl discussed scars, her line was great. I’m always partial to the line Hannibal Lecter had, “What a collection of scars you have. Never forget who gave you the best of them, and be grateful, our scars have the power to remind us that the past was real.” but Isabelle’s line about scars was good too. It does seem like a significant theme of this will be the exploration of faith, what do you have faith in. The convent, yes, did seem most benevolent. Like you said, perhaps not the best course of action to not put down the father after his becoming walkerfied. I can’t altogether blame them though. We’re talking about a man of the cloth. You put one in his head, then you go STRAIGHT to Hell. Tellingly, even the one guy with the bad guys was reluctant to put down the padre. Yeah, it is difficult to say about the kid being the messiah. I mean, I too would be skeptical of the kid being THE messiah. I would not rule out the possibility of maybe the kid being a messiah in a more secular and/or mundane way. And to Isabelle’s credit, she does concede that they could be wrong as evidenced by her saying to Daryl that if so, he could still help the boy go somewhere where he can live a better life. I loved your concern for the convent when the bad guys showed up. Great that Daryl stayed behind to help. The show does good on showing this leader is quite a dictator as if Daryl was still within the walls, he does have the right to sanctuary. A right that the leader of the bad guys clearly didn’t give a shit about, further evidenced by his rude tone when talking to the nuns. I’m saying, “Boys, you got to learn not to talk to nuns that way.” Though they do mind their language, which is smart. Nuns will beat your ass silly if you swear in front of them. Saddened though many of them lose their lives, it was great to see the nuns make their last stand. All in all, like you said, an interesting first episode. I look forward to the journey ahead, Jess. Thank you for the reaction.
