Well, initially, Mary Tamm was dubious taking on the role but was assured that she wouldn't be a continual 'damsel in distress' and would be on a level of empowerment with The Doctor. She left after only one season because she felt that the character had reverted to the traditional assistant role and that it wouldn't be developed any further. In an interview in 2007, she stated that she was willing to shoot a regeneration sequence to allow a smooth transition between her own version of Romana and her successor Lalla Ward, however she was not invited to do so. During her tenure as Romana, Lalla had an interesting little conversation with Patrick Stewart. They had both been appearing in the BBC Shakespeare production of Hamlet - Patrick as Claudius, Lalla was Ophelia and Derek Jacobi was Hamlet. The elevator conversation went somehow along these lines. "So . . erm. You've appeared in Doctor Who?" "Yes!" "Science Fiction! Hm. I'd never do anything like that". Really, Jean-Luc? . . or Professor X?? Are we ever going to let him forget that? Nah. Not really!

Ah. Of course! And this is the first time there is an indication that Time Ladies have a bit more control over the result of the regeneration. Cue River's "Shut up, Dad! I'm focusing on a dress size!" Of course, this could be subject to age and general condition. - Oh, to be young! We can probably suppose that Romana being tortured by The Shadow had something to do with the need to regenerate. The Movellans also turned up in the Peter Capaldi adventure The Pilot when he was trying to shake off the pursuit of Bill from the 'water ghost' that had taken over Heather and materialized the TARDIS mid-skirmish in a battle between the Movellans and the Daleks. Much to Nardole's dismay.

Thank you for an amazing reaction. I know people feel this doesn't quite cut the mustard like Genesis did (and yes, that was the last time in Classic Who we had a Dalek story), but it does stick out in my mind because I remember it so well as a child. The bit where they burst through that wall & corner Romana petrified me as a kid as did Davros's awakening. I laugh now because it was postulated in a book I read that the only purpose of that wall seemed to be so they could burst through it! Well, Mary Tamms decision to leave has already been explained but I did want to mention something about Lalla Ward in that her and Tom Baker became 'ever so close' (his words when he reacted to this story). It may be telling from their performance. They even got married - but sadly it wasn't the fairy tale romanace every Who fan hoped it would be & seperated after a very short period, citing work commitments getting in the way of their relationship. Both went on to re-marry. So sad, but true. See you next time!
