4x13 : Great reaction to what is a bonkers, and much talked about episode!! The Minister interrogating Sabine suggests Ezra isn't safe entering the World Between Worlds; I wonder since he is investigating force lore, that he must know that Palpatine is a force user, something the galaxy at large doesn't. Of course we saw his conversation with the Emperor in the previous episode about the gateways into this place, and we have only met one other Minister in Star Wars I believe, one who woke up Vader in Rogue One. Perhaps these are allies of the Sith, like the Sith Eternal on Exegol we saw in Rise Of Skywalker. I did say when the Empire got their hands on the Jedi Temple that it was bad news, and now we see why. If Sidious can get into the World Between Worlds, he has control over the entire universe, since he can manipulate any event. If anything this is even worse than what the Death Star will bring! Speaking of the sequels, Ezra hears all sorts of voices in all sorts of periods, some from the future. You can hear Jyn Erso give her call to arms to those at Yavin, to go to Scarif and the start Of A New Hope, which is only about a month away now, and we hear some sequel characters like Rey, Kylo Ren (whom I can never work out what he is saying on each rewatch!), Poe Dameron and Maz Kanata. The two lines that affect me the most however, are "This is our most desperate hour" from Leia and as Ezra walks towards Morai's portal, where we hear Anakin from The Clone Wars Movie when he tells Ahsoka - hinting about what we are about to see - "you would never have made it as Obi-Wan's Padawan... but you might make it as mine." Ezra doesn't know it, but he has been in this place several times now. The first is when he got his first lightsabre crystal, and the second when again he met Yoda before they went to Malachor. Does Ezra have a special connection to this place? Is he master of it? Questions for another time. Another thing to think on, is what exactly is Morai? Obviously we know its part of the Daughter that is connected to Ahsoka, but is it part of the cosmic force made corporeal? Vader saw it in the finale of Clone Wars as he picked up Ahsoka's lightsabre, and Ahsoka wasn't there. Of course to me that always said to him that she was very much alive to give him conformation of this; but does it also act independently of her too? It should also be noted that at the end of season 2 at the end when we see Vader limping away from the temple, Morai was there above him, then it immediately came here and perhaps waited on the time when Ezra would come. It helps Ezra here hinting at him to help her, so I'm wondering what its overall purpose is. Just to help Ahsoka when she needs, if so, why? Does it have a larger plan for her to fulfil over time we've yet to see? So many questions! Anyway as great as the end of season 2 was, we saw Ahsoka somehow get out after the temple explodes, but we never came back to it for a resolution, until now. If not for Ezra, Ahsoka dies at the temple, which is quite something to think about. I've had so many debates and arguments about her fight with Vader, but one thing I note, is that when the temple is about to explode, she tries to open the floor to save Anakin, her master, and its only then that Vader has an opening chance to slay her. She is willing to sacrifice herself to save what remains of her master, even if as she states later, she can't 'save' him from what he became. Ahsoka had one hell of a last few hours, running around a Sith Temple, chasing and fighting Inquisitors, Maul, her old master, then being thrown into a time two years on in seconds, see young Ezra - who she just pushed out not 10 seconds ago with his longer hair - now grown up, finds out Kanan is dead, when she just saw him minutes ago, and then has to fight off Darth freakin' Sidious!! I'd like to note an observation Ahsoka makes about DUME, especially since you've seen Clone Wars now Jess. In the Yoda arc, when he is being tested by the High Council when he tells them he hears a voice beyond in Qui-Gon (though he doesn't state its him), some of the council members dismiss it out of hand and act as though thats impossible. Ki-Adi Mundi and Mace Windu being some who don't believe that. Its interesting to see that Ahsoka, who never became a Jedi Knight, is able to see that those that have passed, may still be able to guide others along. Again, how does she surmise this? Is it because of Morai containing the spirit of The Daughter; or does Ahsoka see more clearly through the force that some of those other well-regarded Jedi Masters, were not? Its saddening hearing the desperation in Ezra's voice, as he thinks he can also save Kanan. This is exactly what Anakin believed about Padme too as he went down a dark path to try to prevent her own death. Ezra eventually sees through the vision of Kanan on top of the fuel pods as he passes, that it was Kanan's moment, and he must accept his sacrifice and let him go, as all padawans eventually must. Its a harsh way for him to learn this, but a necessary one for him to become a Jedi Knight. Ahsoka too realises this when she tells Ezra about letting go; she has to do the same with Anakin. I always think of her introduction in The Mandalorian as she says there about seeing what anger and fear can do 'to the best of us'. By then she has been through this here, accepted it; but a sadness will always remain for her fallen master. Palpatine's cackle as he thinks he is about to gain access to this gateway, is a hoot! He may be the devil, but he is a great fun villain! He shows a new ability here as he delves into Sith Alchemy, a blue force fire that wounds Ahsoka and causes Ezra's trooper armour to become ashen. They barely get away from him, and Ahsoka goes back to Malachor (as it will possibly affect other things by going elsewhere) whilst Ezra gets back to the Spectres and seals the door to stop Sidious from gaining true unlimited power. The music in the final 5 minutes is tremendous, as Ezra closes the 'door' and then also in the final moments of the episode. Its stunning stuff and brings tears to the eyes as its a final take on Kanan's Theme, as his remaining spirit moves on into the beyond. "Goodbye Kanan" gets me every time; Ezra says it simply and in acceptance, but we as the audience know the finality of that line. Caleb Dume is gone. Ezra now has all the knowledge needed to realise his own destiny. A couple of quick notes to end with for this episode. Chopper using a land excavator to happily mow down stormtroopers is legendary, I'm sure he's bellowing "mow them down, mow them down!!" as he runs over the stormtroopers! And Hera's body language at the end is painful to watch. She still has her hand on her shoulder where Kanan touched it, and you can feel her grief, pain and vulnerability as she has to accept that he is gone once and for all now. She needs a big warming hug from Zeb! This is a divisive episode amongst the fanbase, some love it, some say its their favourite episode of Rebels; and some hate it because they think its about time travel (its not as Filoni confirmed) which has always been seen to be a no-no throughout the fanbase and supposed Star Wars lore. For my own part, I love it; its a new concept that brings about interesting ideas to further extend the mystery of the force, which has always been my biggest love with Star Wars, about how it ties everything together. This corresponds with my own ideas and beliefs about the universe at large, that we are all connected, and the World Between Worlds, for me, is a concept all about that.

4x14 : This episode's title "A Fool's Hope" is from Lord Of The Rings (there are many nods to Lord Of The Rings throughout this series). There is a line from Gandalf in it where he says "there was never much hope... only a fool's hope" - him being the fool who organised the plan to send Frodo to Mount Doom. As The Ghost flies in and we see Rex, he is donning the rebel armour that will be seen in Return Of The Jedi; to see a clone from the prequels, swap clone armour for Rebel Alliance gear in the original trilogy is brilliant but also discombobulating! We haven't seen much of The Ghost in season 4 as its been off with Rex, Kallus and the other rebels at Yavin doing missions for them. To me this suggests now, its not so much just Hera's ship, but a rebel in its own right! Wolffe and Gregor have upgraded from their fallen republic tank, to the AT-AT that Kanan, Zeb, Sabine and Ezra used to save them, love it! And we see why Hera comes, to call in others to help Ezra, as he and the Jedi have helped them in the past. Even Hondo, who as two-faced as he is, always had a soft spot for the Jedi, and he really took to Ezra, so much so that now he is willing to do anything to help him. That line brings tears to my eyes, to see that Hondo has a heart in there someplace, and is willing to fight the good fight for Ezra. Ezra meditating on his own now, something I don't think we have seen before in the show as Kanan was always there and did that. Its up to him now though, and he sees its now or never if the plan is to succeed. I despise Pryce, but I kind of like seeing her becoming increasingly ruffled about finding the rebels to try to get back in Thrawn's good books. Chopper picking up that stormtrooper and dropping him to his death will never get old! I love that droid! Zeb as well with that heavy gun, they should have given him something like that earlier in the series, he looks frightening in full flight wielding that thing!! Again the music scoring is superb as Hera comes in to finish the plan to get Pryce. Using the Return Of The Jedi theme, then when the clones jump off the Ghost, they switch to their themes. Wonderful. Ezra's cave moment with the wolves sends goosebumps down my spine, its glorious. Its an echo back to the first season, when Ezra used the giant beastie to stall the Grand Inquisitor using anger and fear. Here though, he is completely balanced, in full control of his abilities, and showing his power through the force as he gives the command to the wolves to go after the stormtroopers changing the course of the battle. The image of seeing Ezra with his gorgeous green lightsabre in the darkness, followed by the light of the eyes of the wolves, may be my favourite image in all Star Wars, and that is saying something considering all the great shots we have in the franchise. Ezra is becoming a Jedi Knight... The wolves destroying the stormtroopers, this is them unleashed now, and they are dishing out some vengeance on the Empire literally. Its a horrifying sight, but they too have shown just how much they want the Empire off Lothal. I'm not a sadist, but I really enjoy seeing Pryce beg not to let the wolves tear her apart, and cower in fear. This plan cost the rebels their base here, but getting Pryce was the main goal in assisting everyone to try and rid Lothal of the Empire. Finally, a fun bit of trivia for this episode is that there was a version made for the creators where all the screams of the stormtroopers, as they are taken out by the wolves, were replaced by squeaks from chew toys! I hope that gets released one day - go on Filoni, release the squeaky cut!! :D

A shame there’s only one reaction left. The first episode of this reaction pretty much broke the internet. I hear you on getting chills from hearing the voices past and voices yet to come as we hear dialogue from Rogue One, the original trilogy, and The Force Awakens. No audio from The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker as they hadn’t been released and/or filmed when the episodes were created. As has been mentioned, many fans take the World Between Worlds to be timey-wimey in nature, when in actuality it’s more like I quoted from Milton last week by likening it to the “Palace of Eternity”. Naturally as you noted, no wonder the Emperor wants it. Your own commentary on all of it was perfect, Jess. A striking moment when Ezra saves Ahsoka and brought an end to the two years of questions and debates of her fate. Of course, you knew that somehow Ahsoka would return given you’ve seen her in live action and are going to continue that journey soon. I love how she hears the line James Earl Jones had as Vader in Return of the Jedi, “Obi-Wan once thought as you do.” a line made SO much more powerful following the Obi-Wan show. It does break the heart having to witness Kanan’s death again, especially how Ahsoka admits to knowing Ezra’s pain. And it provides the lesson of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, and how sometimes the needs of oneself must be sacrificed for the needs of the many to survive. A haunting moment when we hear the voice of Freddie Prinze Jr morph into Ian McDiarmid, thus heralding the Emperor popping in to say “Hey.” as you described it. The pure unbridled JOY at hearing Ian say, “EZ-RA BRIDGAHH!! AND AH-SHOW-KAH TANO!! MINE!! AT LAST!!” followed by that glorious cackle of his, GAH, is it wonderful!! I can even excuse the mispronunciation of Ahsoka’s name as it is the Emperor showing how little he thinks of her, in fact her and Ezra, as far as the Emperor is concerned, they are pukes. They are the lowest form of life in the galaxy. They are not even human fucking beings, or a Togruta fucking being in Ahsoka’s case. They are nothing but unorganized, grab-asstic pieces of amphibian shit. Likewise, exquisite hearing Ian utter the ancient language of the Sith when the Emperor deals in that old Sith magic. Your reactions to old Sheev’s actions in this were beyond spectacular. Hydan and Sabine discovering the Daughter was the key to opening the temple explains why the Emperor could not: She is the Light, and the Emperor can no longer feel the light. Shame to lose Hydan. I like to think he’s upset as once it was all said and done, the Emperor was going to treat him to a month of dinner and milk plus at the Korova Milk Bar followed by evenings out to indulge in a little of the old ultraviolence. A moment that gets you right in the heart when Hera and Ezra sense that Kanan has ascended to a higher plane of the Force. And it got me, when you had the reaction that you did when Ezra saw Dume disappear into the light. Lord, that was emotional. Now to the second episode. Lovely to see Hera, Rex, and Kallus recruit help, especially getting Wolffe and Gregor back into the fight. By the way, yeah, a shame there wasn’t the greatest amount of focus on Kallus. I too would have liked more focus on him, but that wasn’t the story told, so, it’s what it is. Always a pleasure to see Hondo again, and you are right that he unexpectedly makes you cry when he solemnly declares that “For that boy, there is nothing I would not do.” Jim sold that line and then some, and your reaction to it was beautiful, Jess. Likewise, an amusing moment when Hondo tries to reassure Kallus, but stumbles at that. Which, coming from Hondo, was genuinely a ringing endorsement, in all honesty. I liked how you were questioning was Ryder genuinely turning stoolie or was it an elaborate plot. As you saw, it was the latter, but I liked how you had that question. Ezra’s right as they had to act now as he sensed the Emperor sending Thrawn back to Lothal, and informed Thrawn that he and Sheev will have a LONG talk when he gets back to Coruscant. It’s for this reason they have the gambit of Ryder “surrendering” as Thrawn wouldn’t fall for it, but Pryce would, even if she inadvertently points out my own thought that it seems too cowardly an act for Ryder, which is why I called bullshit on it. The action was indeed fantastic in the second episode, especially when Hera brings in the cavalry, underscored by John’s main theme in the style it was heard during that oh so great sequence in Return of the Jedi. That moment with the loth-wolves, God, did it get me so emotional seeing how much it made you SO excited, Jess. That was one of the best moments of your Rebels reactions. Similarly, it melts the heart when Greogor and Wolffe marvel at the beasts in action, and how it takes Wolffe back to the good old days of leading the Wolf Pack that was Plo’s Bros. All in all, a most fantastic penultimate Rebels reaction, Jess. I wish we had more, but all good things, and all that. As you anticipate, the finale will be most action-packed, particularly with everyone onstage for said finale. It is going to be a reaction to remember, and I cannot wait to see it. Thank you again for this most wonderful reaction, Jess.

I was under the impression that Hydan was part of the Imperial court. You know, those guys in Return of the Jedi who accompanied the Emperor to the second Death Star. He might have a connection to what you brought up, I will concede that is possible. It gives a man pause just thinking about the Emperor having control over the World Between Worlds. Well, of course you can’t understand Kylo Ren’s dialogue as it’s hard to understand him with all the apparatus. His line that we hear is “Show me. Grandfather. And I will finish...what you started.” Carrie’s iconic lines and Matt’s line in Clone Wars do get you in the heart. Yeah, about Ezra, a good question. Likewise, there is the mystery about Morai. I assume it will get answered, and even if it isn’t, I like the idea of it being a riddle for the ages. Ahsoka did say she wouldn’t leave Anakin this time, and despite it all, she still tries to save him. I assume some of the arguments about the last bit of her duel with Vader is from people who were more optimistic about Anakin showing mercy to Ahsoka by stranding her on the planet and were upset when it was revealed that Vader was pulling no punches and tried to murder her. Snips did indeed go through a tiring and turbulent day. A sad moment when she and Ezra have that moment of lamenting about their fallen masters. Ian brings excellence to the Emperor as he always does. Palpy may be evil incarnate, but good Lord is he insanely FUN about it having a jolly good time. I LOVE him showing off his alchemy skills. The music knocks it out of the park as per usual. That “Goodbye, Kanan.” man does it hurt. Yeah, Zeb goddamn well better give Hera a great big hug.

Like Gimli said, “Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?” Yeah, Rex in that gear makes me say that the one theory is definitely canon. My brother thought it sounded odd, then I showed him a side-by-side picture, he said, “I’ll be damned, I guess I stand corrected.” Good men, Wolffe and Gregor upgrading to the AT-AT. Oh, when Hondo waives any fee, and says he’s doing this for Ezra, hard to trust the man who doesn’t get at the very least misty eyed at that. That gets me bad. I figured you’d love seeing Pryce spiraling, growing increasingly worried that, to borrow from The Thick of It, that her fuck-up “is now growing faster than the speed of bloody light! It's not gonna be something that we can see from space, IT'S GOING TO BE SPACE! BRIAN COX IS GONNA PHONE ME AND ASK FOR THE FILM RIGHTS!!” It gets me every time when they use the Return of the Jedi music. All these years later, it is still my favorite Star Wars film. Everything about the imagery of Ezra and the wolves is indeed wondrous. I’m with you on wanting them to release the squeaky cut.

I imagine it did break the internet when The World Between Worlds aired, its still divisive today. I love this interview Filoni gives about the WBW though and his explanation about it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbSLauUibsk I especially like what he says about sticking to Lucas's vision whilst taking chances and moving the story and the lore forward. And I think thats why some have an issue with this, its something new and they are unsure about it; but if the fanbase goes after the creators too much, then chances will stop being taken and things will become repetitive and Lucasfilm will get shouted at for doing the same thing again. I'd rather they did stuff like this here, took chances on things that might not even work, because it helps keep Star Wars fresh as it continues without Lucas now, else it will just get stale and fade away for a decade or so, until another reboot, which is not what anyone wants. Hearing today funnily enough that Filoni is now in total charge of things creatively going forward, which is a step in the right direction and helps keep things cohesive moving forward. He's big enough too, to listen to others and have others input too which will make him a good leader to help push Star Wars on into the next decade. As for Ahsoka, of course a little bit of the drama is lost for Jess knowing Ahsoka makes it, but this was HUGE back then when this aired, and I believe there was a famous incident with Filoni and a couple of t-shirts at the time when he wore one that said "Ahsoka lives?", then came back on stage later and had another one on that said "Ahsoka lives!" - some boy!! And of course this is HOW she survived Malachor and into Mando over the next decade. People are often annoyed when Ahsoka's name is miss-spelt as Ashoka, but I always point them to good old Sidious here and state that if its good enough for the Emperor, its good enough for us! Instead of taking Hydan for milk and a bit of the old ultraviolence, he might have treated him to some Mon Calamari opera, who knows! Hearing about Kanan moving on and seeing the wolf move into the sunrise, is so emotional, as is hearing Kanan say finally to Ezra "the force will be with you... always" as he ascends. Then the music again on top, its too much! I think Jess is at the stage now like the rest of us that whenever she'll hear his name, there will be a warm smile, but a pang of sadness. What a story his was. I do agree about Kallus too. His story is kind of finished at the end of season 3 and I would have liked something more for him this season, but they rightly decided to focus on finishing up the main story, which is something they never got to do with Clone Wars at the time and Resistance later; so its understandable that Kallus kind of gets left behind. Its great how Ryder and Ezra play Pryce too, and how they note that they wouldn't be able to fool Thrawn, but Pryce - especially with her being hysterical now in trying to finish off these rebels before Thrawn returns - is much easier to dupe. Looking forward to the finale next week, its going to be great!
