One especially fun part of this one now is that we actually have a Trek series where a Mellanoid slime worm is part of the main cast, and one of the most popular things about the show. And considering Zaldans hate cuteness, it still makes perfect sense that this particular character would call someone that as an insult. I do wish it was a little less easy to see coming that the emergency is in fact the test, but Wil Wheaton gives easily his best performance so far and you can at least get invested in what he thinks is going on even though you know it isn't real. Some fans have also come up with a theory that the whole thing was a setup to get a Benzite in Starfleet, seeing as Mordock is put up against an inexperienced kid, a condescending and over-confident jerk, and someone who just plain sucks at everything, and Wesley nearly ruined it by doing so well, forcing them to resort to some legalese BS to make Mordock the winner. And considering some of what we see from Starfleet elsewhere in the franchise, that's not exactly hard to believe.

For me, this episode illustrates a growing confidence in the part of the show runners. There is no alien threat that needs to be overcome and/or settled; there are simply a bunch of dilemmas that need overcoming (the runaway shuttlepod; the vexing and bothersome investigation; Wesley's exams), each one providing a separate storyline. (Question: is Wesley's exam the A or B plot?). These three storylines run concurrently, and are all interesting - and, in the end, are given no pat resolutions. Will Wesley bounce back from this failure? Will the investigation, and it's resulting suspicions against Starfleet, come to anything? Already, TNG is doing a type of storytelling that differs from TOS; and, for me, it makes it more interesting.

I concur that we ended the year with a great Star Trek episode. I don’t know how popular this episode is, but I quite enjoyed it. Very frustrating for the crew having to put up with Remmick’s investigation. Kudos to Robert Schenkkan in his performance as the character. Yeah, you get that he kind of had to be an asshole, yet he was still quite insufferable. Lovely how the crew had Picard’s back, loved all your reactions to that. Oh yes, the moment with Beverly was COMPLETELY uncalled for, I yelled, “You BASTARD!!” when he questioned Beverly. LOVED Gates selling Beverly’s response. Sadly, we don’t get a scene of Tasha defending Picard, especially as Denise would have killed it. It is also during the investigation we have the inaugural appearance of the Riker Maneuver, loved your reaction to that. The reason for it is debated, though the common thought is that it’s done because Jonathan has an old back injury, plus he’s as tall as he is. A most impressive moment was when Picard saves the boy. It is great how there’s zero suspense as to what Picard’s decision would be. Your comments on Picard’s internal monologue were priceless. I imagine he thinks he could take that job, but he doesn’t want to. Heavy lies the crown, sort of thing. To his old friend’s credit, he takes the answer well. Now to the Wesley storyline, which I must say, I loved how you got into that plotline. It was great seeing Wesley’s first attempt at getting into Starfleet Academy. Yes, it is a highlight of the supportive atmosphere, well showcased by Lieutenant Chang. Great to see Robert Ito whom I best know him as Sam from Quincy, love that show. It is a truly lovely moment that Worf had with Wesley; Michael was great. When he read you to filth with the line, “Thinking about what you can’t control only wastes energy and creates its own enemy.” He read me to filth as well, Jess, so don’t worry. Though as Ryan notes that it is a touch obvious that the test is in play, Wil puts in great work at selling Wesley going through the emotions during the sort of Kobayashi Maru test. That last moment with Picard and Wesley was most lovely, and your own comments of how Wesley is surrounded by such icons, it would result in him having uncertainty that he could ever measure up to that standard. Me, I recalled two lines. First, as Alan Arkin said in Little Miss Sunshine, “Do you know what a loser is? A real loser is someone who’s so afraid of not winning, they don’t even try. Now you’re trying, right? Well then, you’re not a loser!” Second, from Colonel Potter in M*A*S*H, “Listen, it’s too big a world to be in competition with everybody. The only guy I have to get better than is who I am right now. And in your case, that’s tough enough.” And it’s an occasion where we are reminded of the bond between the two characters; that although Picard is not Wesley’s father, he is the most prominent father figure in his life. And that moment is a great reminder of that and was so sweet. All in all, a great episode reacted to it so well. Talk about what you discussed at the beginning. Yeah, it has been quite a year for you. Nice to hear your nose is mostly fully healed. Sorry to hear the cold dry air aggravates it some still. Sorry I can’t say the same for me as I suppose my body’s too acclimated to over thirty years of winters in the American Midwest, some of which have been fantastically brutal, though it has been uncharacteristically warm over this holiday season. Still, you have my sympathy and my happiness that the surgery was successful, and that the year did bring great fortune, especially with your hitting one hundred thousand subscribers on youtube. I hope the good fortune continues in the year ahead. Until then, Jess, thank you for a great year of marvelous reactions, and for being just wonderful as you always are.

The way you reacted to the Riker Maneuver (the way he sits in chairs) cracked me up.
