Chapter #18: Wide awake.

Hermione was sitting on a chair close to Bellatrix’s bed. She had a notebook, and she was writing as fast as she could the answers to every question she asked to test Bellatrix’s mental state.

“So… You're telling me that you don’t remember a thing, are you completely certain of that?” Asked Hermione with a raised brow.

“Yes, I have no idea who I am, what I’m doing here, or what this place is,” Bellatrix answered in a worried tone.

Hermione had a serious expression. She grabbed a file that had a lot of numbers and data, which was the analysis of her mind that the magical artifacts came up with.

“Just like I was suspecting, it seems like she lost her memory almost completely; she doesn’t remember her family, and of course, she doesn’t remember you, Harry… Her husband,” Hermione pointed at her best friend.

“I was married?” She asked as she took a look at her supposed husband. “Wow, my older self must have been something else if she managed to catch such a hot man,” Bellatrix was having a hard time believing that was true.

Harry became embarrassed while Hermione chuckled.

“Well, it was an arranged marriage, which resulted in you getting pregnant, oh, sorry, I forgot to congratulate you for that,” Hermione told the patient.

Bellatrix couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She didn’t know why, but she felt very happy hearing the news. Soon, her hand moved to her stomach.

“I hope the baby gets your eyes… I love your eyes, but I’m sure you know that, as people probably tell you that all the time. I’m sure my previous self couldn’t stop staring at them,” Bellatrix told Harry with a warm smile.

Harry wanted to tell her how wrong she was, but he didn’t have the heart to do it.

“Well, I sure hope the baby is as strong-willed as you are. Trust me, you’re the most amazing person I've met in my life,” Harry couldn’t help but admit.

Hermione clarified her voice; the situation was becoming too intimate.

“Physically, she’s fine, she can walk, and there’s no damage in the nerves that couldn’t be reversed, so she can leave as soon as she wants,” Hermione told them with a calm expression.

Harry nodded.

“What can we do to restore her memory?” Harry was now asking the important questions.

“I can’t assure you it’ll work, but we’ll appoint her with our best mind healers, and we'll have weekly sessions. For now, I think it’s for the best if she spends time with her close ones. Maybe spending time with them will help restore some of her memories,” the brown-haired witch spoke in a calm tone.

Harry nodded at his best friend.

“Well, I'd better get going. I’ll visit you soon, Bella,” Harry promised her before he left the room.

Bellatrix didn’t have the chance to say goodbye properly and she was a bit disappointed that he didn’t kiss her in the lips, Harry decided not to do it right now that she doesn’t remember who he was, she likes this Bellatrix but he knows it’s not the real one and when the real one comes back, he doesn’t think she’ll be happy if he replaced her with her mind broken version.

Harry finally got out of the room, and he was greeted by his family and Bellatrix’s family. Harry decided to tell them what Hermione told him. The reactions were mixed, but at least they were happy that she woke up.

“In my opinion, she should stay in the house she grew up in,” Harry declared with a serious tone.

They looked at him with a confused expression.

“Don’t tell me you’re giving up on her, son,” James said, surprised. He thought that Harry was starting to fall for the older witch.

“Oh, not at all dad, the thing is, if we want her to restore her memory, she needs to be in places she’s used to, she lived at least twenty years in her parents’ house, I think that could help with her memory issues, you should go inside though, Hermione is going to explain in more detail how the treatment will go,” Harry said with a serious tone.

Everyone but his parents got inside; they weren’t as close as the rest with Bellatrix, so it was fine.

“You don’t look too hopeful about the treatment, son,” James said to his son, who was a bit worried.

“Well, mind magic is kind of unreliable, but I hope they can make it. If they don’t, then… I plan to make her fall for me, but for now, I don’t want to get close to her, of course I’ll still visit her because of our baby, but, I don’t want this version of Bella to replace the one I fell for, I’m sure she would hate me if I did that,” Harry confessed with a soft smile.

His parents nodded at him.

“Yes, that’s for the best,” Lily said as she caressed his cheek.

“She seemed kind of interested in me. It was hard for me not to stay there and tell her I love her, but I never knew how she truly felt about me; it wouldn’t be fair for me to act like our love was mutual,” Harry sighed.

His parents nodded, and then he looked at his watch. He sighed and looked at Bellatrix’s room for the last time.

“I have to deal with some business in the Auror department,” Harry finally got ready to leave.

“Son… You know you can trust us, right? If you want to, you can stay with us until you need it,” Lily offered, and Harry smiled weakly.

“Mother… Father… I—I would love that very much, I don’t want to be alone,” it felt weird to be honest with his parents after so long.

His parents smiled and finally let him go. Before going to the Auror department, he couldn’t help but want something to drink; he needed something strong, so he went to the Three Broomsticks and decided to have a table for himself.

“Mr. Potter, I wasn’t expecting to find you here,” Harry was surprised to see Professor McGonagall drinking.

“Professor, what are you—” He sighed once he realized. “Hogsmeade visit day, right?” He asked, and she nodded.

“I’ve heard the news… Congratulations on the baby, and also, I’m glad to know that your wife finally awoke.” She took a seat and ordered the same as he did, a really strong firewhisky.

“Thank you, Professor, the pregnancy… It should’ve been the happiest day of our lives, I mean, Bellatrix was the one who wanted to become a parent the most, and then this happens, and for some reason I can't stop feeling guilty,” he caressed his forehead in frustration. It wasn’t fair.

“Mr. Potter, please don’t lose faith way too soon. St. Mungo’s has the best mind healers of the continent; they’ll know what to do, she’ll be back,” McGonagall tried to make him feel better.

“I’m scared, Minerva.” It was weird to say those words.

But he wasn’t a student anymore; he could now call the professor by her name.

“I know… But this will be temporary, I can swear on that, you’ll get through this, trust me, I'm sure of that, because I don’t know someone as strong-willed as you are, Harry,” she smiled at him.

Somehow, that made him feel a bit better, and now he felt motivated.
