Chapter #38: A night with Hermione.
A gritty, somewhat pessimistic, and yet hypnotic sound of a band was filling a pub, and people were drinking and enjoying the dark sound coming from the band.
“…In the deepest darkness of my heart…” The lyrics said.
Harry and Hermione were moving just like the other attendants; however, they were staring into each other’s eyes, lost, and focused on each other. They didn’t care that they didn’t know the band or the lyrics; they were only focused on enjoying this moment together. It was clear that there was some unresolved tension between them.
“…There’s still a burning light…” The song continued.
Harry couldn’t help but feel identified with the lyrics; he couldn’t deny that there was darkness inside his heart, maybe it was there all the time, or maybe he was truly cursed, or maybe it was caused by the cards he had played since the day he was born in his original universe.
Still, no matter the circumstances, he knows that despite all the things he's gone through, he has reasons not to fall for the darkness; in this case, Hermione is one of those people who motivate him to keep on going, or at least she was in his original universe.
“…In that special place, there’s no one but you…” The song continued.
Harry and Hermione suddenly got closer; they didn’t know what was possessing them. Maybe it was the vibe, or maybe they decided that it was time to stop playing around, and so, they finally kissed, and somehow, this felt magical, especially for Hermione; they could swear that there were sparks as they kissed.
Soon, they forgot about everything else; they forgot about the music, the drinks, the people that were around them, all of that didn’t matter any longer. The only thing they cared about was deepening that kiss; neither of them wanted to stop, and so, they continued kissing until the song reached its peak and ended with a guitar solo.
And then, the band started to play a romantic song, which was slow and calm, but then, it became harder. The lyrics were dark and beautiful, telling the story of two lovers whose love was doomed, but instead of giving up, they were going to do everything they could to be together.
Almost an hour later, Harry and Hermione were finally leaving the pub after sharing some drinks and having a good time. The streets were dark now, so Harry decided to take Hermione to a calmer place; there was something they needed to talk about, and they needed to do it in a secluded place.
They reached a park, and soon, they reached a small bridge. They had been silent this whole time; they knew they needed to talk, but this wasn’t easy.
“Harry… I want to thank you… I had a lot of fun,” Hermione confessed with a flustered expression.
“I’m glad to hear that, Hermione, that was the purpose of this adventure, for you to have fun… There’s more in life than books, and I think that even though you are the studious lady, the one everyone looks for to help them with their homework, there's a more interesting side of you behind all that,” Harry thought bitterly of his brother and Ron for making her do their homework.
Some may think he was being a bit hypocritical because in his original universe, Hermione also helped him and Ron, but she ended up falling for Ron back in his universe, and they were genuinely in love, so it’s clear that it didn’t bother her too much to help the redhead. As for him, he never asked her to check on his homework.
She just did it the first time, and then it became a custom for her. She actually confessed that she did it for selfish reasons, as helping others made her feel confident about herself, and also, because by doing that, she was double studying, something that she loved.
But it’s clear that this Hermione didn’t develop like the one in his original universe, this Hermione never went through what the original trio went through so, it made sense for this Hermione to behave like that, he wanted to change that and make her see that there were much more in life that being stuck in a library, especially with Voldemort coming back to haunt them one of these days.
“But also…” Harry continued.
“Yes?” She asked with a hopeful smile.
“I think there’s something we need to discuss, don’t you think?” He asked with a soft smile.
Hermione blushed, but in the end, she nodded, and Harry decided to clarify his voice. This was a very different experience. He indeed dated Ginny during his school days, but romance wasn’t his top priority, not even when he was dating her; Voldemort was his top priority back then.
This was so new for him, and it was so weird how, despite everything he had lived through, something like this was making him lose his mind. He hated overthinking things, so he decided to use Dudley’s life method: turn off your brain and relax.
“Hermione… I like you; I like you a lot,” Harry told her with a calm expression.
Harry was expecting her to complain because of his bluntness, but instead, she smiled.
“I like you too, Harry.” Soon, they shared another kiss; however, their conversation wasn’t over yet.
“Hermione… There’s something you need to know about me,” he told her with a worried expression. “You’re not the only woman I’m seeing… I actually have other lovers,” he decided to be honest.
The last thing he wanted was for a relationship to be built on a lie; that’s a recipe for disaster. He was expecting her to snap at him and call him many different names, maybe insult his parents, whom she didn’t know were Lily and James.
“Well, that’s a surprise, I can’t deny that,” she confessed, and Harry decided to take a look into her mind.
She was a spy for Dumbledore after all; however, he was relieved to find that she was actually interested in him, not because of her job as a spy but because she truly liked him. He hated doing this, but he couldn’t afford to lie about something like this; the murders he had committed and other crazy stuff he had done, he could lie about those, but not about his other lovers.
“So, are you building a harem or something?” She asked playfully with a soft smirk.
Harry was taken aback by her words, and then he started to laugh slowly. She joined him, too, even though they were dealing with something as serious as this; she still found a way to make things less weird, which is why he loved having her as his best friend.
“No… I mean, it’s just that many women love me and…” He looked at her with a worried expression.
“A little arrogant, aren't you, Mr. Dursley?” She asked, with her best McGonagall-like tone.
Harry tried his hardest not to burst out laughing.
“Well, that’s the truth, trust me, I’m not walking down the street trying to bed every woman I see, it’s just that, they come up to me, and because I want to try everything in life, it’s difficult for me to reject them,” he answered in the calmest tone possible.
Hermione remained silent for a few moments. Harry was worried that she would explode and tell him to fuck off.
“Well, show me then,” she told him. “Show me why so many women are after you,” she demanded as she bit her lower lip.
Soon, they started to kiss passionately.
