Chapter #43: Focus on your goals.
At the Hogwarts breakfast table, everyone was discussing the news in the Daily Prophet. More followers of Voldemort were captured and brought by a bounty hunter who censored his face and voice, while many Slytherins were angry and sad for the captured Death Eaters, as many of them were killed, the rest of the school were cheering, knowing that the streets were safer.
Harry, on the other hand, was satisfied because he was the one capturing and killing all those bastards; if people found out he was behind all this, they would be shocked, and to make matters more interesting, those weren’t the only victims.
Harry was killing Death Eaters who didn’t have bounties on their heads, but those were thrown into the middle of the ocean. He never forgot the names of the snatchers and all the people involved in that awful year when Voldemort took control of the country back in his original universe.
He wasn’t going to let that repeat here. Some would say that it would be better not to interfere with that, but the order is acting at a very slow pace; at this point, they should’ve already destroyed Voldemort. Harry has no idea why Dumbledore is wasting time.
“I can’t believe it!” Hermione said as she sat beside him.
“What is it, Mione?” He asked with a calm tone.
Everyone got worried for Harry because all the people who called her that usually end up getting scolded, but Hermione didn’t seem to mind being called that by Harry, which shocked her friends and all the people who knew her. Ron was looking at the two of them with extreme jealousy.
“I was rejected on my advanced arithmancy internship submission; they said I didn’t have what was required to join the arithmancy guild,” Hermione said angrily.
Harry could only place a hand on her shoulder.
“I don’t know why I got rejected. I have the best grades at school, I’m good when it comes to theory and practical lessons, and I’ve won continental arithmancy contests, hell, the 'National Witchcraft' magazine has published various articles written by me… What is it that I’m lacking, Harry?” She asked, completely defeated.
“You want my honest answer, or you want me to just comfort you?” He asked with a calm expression.
Hermione remained silent; she didn’t know what Harry had on his mind, and she didn’t know if she was in the mood to hear negative things about herself, but she was so desperate, and she was starting to get tired of trying.
“What is it, Harry?” She asked with a sad tone.
“You’re not a pureblood witch or part of an ancient family,” Harry said bluntly.
Soon, everyone looked at him warily. He knew this was a sensitive topic because talking about it and acknowledging it makes you sound like a bigot in training, and also, the witches and wizards that are part of those social circles don’t like to admit the fact that they are privileged.
“Careful, Dursley…” Henry said with a cold tone.
“The Slytherin table is right there!” Ron took his wand out.
“Hey, I’m a muggleborn just like her, I know very well what it’s like to be rejected because of your origin. While there were articles praising my participation in the last match of the Gryffindor team, there were articles that were pointing out my muggleborn origins, and that’s the reason why they think I may not be suitable for a professional team… It’s just the way it is,” Harry told them with a serious expression.
“Calm down, you two… He’s right,” Hermione said with a sad tone. “I know very well that you need connections to be part of those circles; they hardly let anyone in without a huge donation, but even if I donated, as a muggleborn, I'm at the bottom of their priorities,” she said with a sad tone.
Seeing her like that broke Harry’s heart, and this made him realize that even if Death Eaters or Voldemort didn't exist, the pureblood customs would remain, and even though those aren’t discriminatory per se, they’re made to protect the non-Muggleborn class.
Hermione’s struggle has reminded him of why he wanted to change the world; people like Hermione deserved to be hired and deserved to have opportunities to thrive. Muggleborns not only bring interesting ideas to make the world better, but the magical genetic pool becomes richer thanks to them.
After hearing Hermione’s words, both Henry and Ron decided to shut their mouths because there was nothing, they could say to make her feel better without sounding like hypocrites. One was a pureblood, and another was a half-blood, part of an ancient family, the ones that benefit the most in this country. Harry wanted to help Hermione, who’s supposed to become the youngest minister in less than ten years. But without the influence of the war, that task is going to be difficult.
“Don’t worry, Hermione, I’m sure you’re going to find someone who’ll accept you, and if they don’t, well… You still have the muggle way, I’m sure you always wanted to attend college before you knew about Hogwarts, right?” Harry told her with a smile.
Hermione remained thoughtful for a few moments before she nodded.
“Yes… Cambridge sounded like a dream back then. I think I should ask for my 'Muggle Education Certificate', and you should do the same thing, Harry. There aren’t many opportunities in this country for people like us,” she sighed with a weak smile on her face.
“Muggle education certificate?” Harry asked with a raised brow.
He had never heard about something like that. Maybe it was a thing from this universe?
“Yes, in a nutshell, it makes the British government recognize that you’re more than capable of attending college, they validate your Hogwarts certificate as a high school diploma, and thanks to that, you can do an exam to study at any university you want,” she explained to him.
“Man, it would be cool if there was a magical university,” Harry couldn’t help but sigh.
He hated his life without magic in the Muggle world, and going back to the Muggle world to study without magic sounded like hell.
“Yeah… If only there were people interested in us having a higher education, that would be great, but governments prefer people to only learn the bare minimum; an ignorant population is easier to control,” she sighed.
Those words gave Harry an idea.
“I wish I could stay longer, but there’s somewhere I need to go,” Harry said with the calmest tone possible.
“Oh, okay, I'll accompany you. I need to keep writing and sending application letters,” they both got up and left the place together.
Both Ron and Henry looked at them with perplexed expressions, and they would’ve been even more shocked if they had found out that Harry and Hermione were kissing outside the Great Hall. They kissed for a few minutes, until it was time to finally part ways. Harry decided to write a letter and sent it with one of the school owls.
“Come on, reveal yourself,” Harry ordered without looking back after he sent the letter.
He heard a feminine groan, and then, it was finally revealed who was spying on him; it was a blonde female student.
“Greengrass,” Harry said with a serious tone.
“Hi Potter, shouldn't you be snogging Granger?” She tried to mock him.
“Are you jealous, Greengrass?” He teased her.
Her arrogant smirk disappeared, and it was replaced with a flustered expression.
“Spying on people is not the proper behavior of a pureblood lady, Daphne. What would your parents think if they knew that you waste your time following a nobody like me?” He taunted her.
However, her smirk never disappeared; it was clear that she wanted something, and he was curious to know what it was.
