Chapter #3: The deal.
Five years- it’s been five years since Hermione and her parents arrived in Harry’s life. He had just turned eleven a couple of days ago, which meant that in his original universe he would’ve received his Hogwarts letter, but not in this universe; there was no such thing as a magical school. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't even met Dumbledore; maybe normal lifespans were more of a common thing here.
To be clear, Hogwarts exists in this world; however, here is a normal academy in the capital, but that was a matter for another day. Right now, Harry was traveling in a carriage with his father and his mother, who was hugging his three-year-old sister Daisy, who was the carbon copy of his mother with her red hair and green eyes. He was glad that his parents finally decided to call it quits when it came to him having siblings, not that Harry had any complaints about it.
He loved Jamie and Daisy, but the age difference was starting to become a bit annoying. It wasn’t great to have a baby crying in the house when you’re in your teenage years, when everything annoys you, and even if Harry is older and wiser mentally, the hormones and the change his body is going through are affecting him anyway. Everyone was dressed formally, and there was a good reason for that.
“Everyone, behave just as we taught you, be nice to the sisters, and if things go right, the marriage will be successfully arranged,” James said with a calm tone.
Harry was surprised by how quickly things were moving. It was probably a cultural thing about this universe, but Harry was feeling like his family was moving too fast when it came to his love life. He couldn’t even feel love yet; luckily, the marriage is going to take place when he and his bride turn eighteen.
But that’s a burden he doesn’t want to think about. Not that Harry hates the person that he’s supposed to marry, but it’s just that he doesn’t feel ready for that. He doesn’t want to take over the family business and become like his father; he had nothing against the man, but his life was very simple and boring in Harry’s opinion.
He was still working with magic, and he had found a bit of progress in that field. He had managed to lift things with his mind and to make things appear, like that time his parents were angry because he was playing until late and punished him with no dessert for that; he wished for dessert so much that a full chocolate cake appeared in his room.
“Harry… Do you know how to behave with the Greengrasses, right?” Asked the older man in a worried tone.
Yes, even though Harry was the only male child and he used to be the favorite of the family, they’ve been a bit disappointed in him lately. The reasons are simple: he doesn’t like to attend his classes; thanks to magic, he can make himself apparate with accidental magic; it's thanks to that he manages to avoid his classes.
Yes, the progress has been incredible, but it has been done because of his willpower; there’s no basis for this magical behavior, and he’s worried about the day when he wouldn’t be able to use accidental magic anymore.
“Yes, father,” Harry said with a serious tone.
“We’re lucky that the Greengrass family only has daughters, or else we would be running in circles trying to get Harry a wife,” James sighed.
Harry decided to let his parents ramble; he was still a bit annoyed that they were already deciding the person he was going to marry. He knew Daphne Greengrass wasn’t the best person in his original universe, as she had links with the Death Eaters, but this wasn’t the same Daphne; however, right now marriage should be the last of his worries.
To be honest, he just wants to have fun and play with Hermione and her inventions. Hermione discovered some interesting things in the world of science; of course, Harry has helped her with suggestions, and thus, because of her discoveries, she has gained a scholarship to Hogwarts, the prestigious private school in the capital.
“Come on, James… You know that not everyone gets accepted at Hogwarts; only exceptional people are accepted there, or people who pass their very hard exam,” Lily said with a serious tone.
Yes, Harry did the exam; however, joining that school is very difficult. Still, the exam was very easy for him because it was all basic knowledge in math and other areas- things that Harry learned once he retired from the Aurors. He took his time to read a lot; he wasn’t a genius, but he at least was sure that he had the right level of knowledge for an eleven-year-old in this universe.
The fact that he knew all that was the reason why he never applied himself during his private classes; he already knew that, and he instead focused on having a happy childhood, and that’s also the reason why his parents seem to have no faith in him because he’s a terrible student.
“Well… Not everyone can attend like your mother and me,” James said with a sarcastic tone.
“Don’t worry, big bro, I will go instead,” Jamie said this time.
Harry smiled at her.
“I know you can.” Harry smiled at his little sister.
“As for you… You were going to take over the family business. Once we know the results of the entrance exam, we’ll decide if you start with your training or not,” James said in a serious tone.
Harry could only nod. He knew there was no point in arguing. He hated thinking like this, but he never saw his parents as his parents. Sadly, that was a fact: these two weren’t his parents; they were different versions of his parents, but not the ones that he loved and sacrificed their lives for him to live.
“Well, it seems like we finally arrived,” Lily said with a fake smile.
She was trying to ease the tension. They looked around, and they found a big manor; it was very fancy. If Harry could describe it, it would surely remind him of the Versailles palace.
The family got down, and they met Cyrus Greengrass and his wife Helena. Of course, the parents greeted each other, and then Harry finally met the Greengrass sisters, and he then did the polite thing that was expected of him: a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Daphne, the blonde, was serious but polite. Her younger sister, Astoria, had brown hair, and she was shyer than her older sister. The parents decided to leave Harry and Daphne alone. She took him to the interesting part of the manor: the pond, the flower fields, the tulip field. Harry couldn’t deny that the place was beautiful.
“I’m going to be honest with you… I don’t want this marriage,” she confessed, and Harry nodded.
Before he could say anything, they were told by a servant that the parents were looking for them; this was Harry's last opportunity to stop this. The parents were saying a lot of things, and Harry didn’t pay attention; he was just there wishing for them to change their minds and cancel this marriage. However, their expressions never changed.
“… That’s why these two shouldn’t marry,” James said.
“Yeah, I agree,” Cyrus said with a grin.
Harry couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The marriage had been cancelled; he wished for it, and he influenced it, that's what he thought or maybe he was dreaming.
