Hello my lovely flowers!

Since it's spooky/witchy season and I draw lootts of sparkly bits around my illustrations year round anyway, I thought I would share with you a few simple ideas for adding sparkly embellishments to your drawings.

There are lots of ways to draw stars, I like to use a mix of more traditional star shapes and then some simple shapes like crosses or circles.

So here are all of the ways I'll draw sparkly bits (laid out as individual shapes):

There are of course other ways you can draw sparkly embellishments, but these are the ones I use and they might give you some ideas to play with next time you're adding sparkles to a witchy drawing.

When I want to bundle them together for extra sparkly-ness, I'll draw a few larger shapes first and balance out the space around them with smaller shapes. Here is how the process goes with an illustrated version underneath:

1. Draw two or three larger star shapes with a decent amount of space between them.2. In the spaces either side of the larger shapes, add in some medium ones. I usually have the larger shapes more complex and simplify them as I get smaller. Notice in this example I've used one star on one side and two small shapes on the other side so that it isn't symmetrical.3. Now in the spaces surrounding those add the smallest and simplest shapes (I use mostly dots here), with some being close to other objects and some being more evenly balanced. If you look at stars in the night sky they aren't all evenly spaced, some clump together so it's ok to use a bit of that here as well.4. For a little more hierarchy you can colour the shapes in, I usually make the biggest shapes stand out the most and will then balance that colour out by spreading some of it across the smaller shapes too. I normally only use two or three colours here.

And that's how I bundle my stars together!

I pretty much always go overboard with the sparkles so I'll often draw lots and then realise I have too many and remove some, so just play around with what feels right for you. I think they're especially great for witchy drawings!
