Hello lovelies!

I just finished a drawing that I started last week of a great big birthday cake with a little bird party going on around it, and I wanted to show you a little breakdown of the process before I post it to Instagram in a few hours. Thanks to everyone who voted in the recent poll about what to draw for helping me decide on this scene!

I think this would make a super cute birthday card, my favourite part is the little orange bird having a sit down 😄

So here's a little snapshot of the illustration coming together and also the colour palette I used (which, as always, you're welcome to use for your own art!):

As usual, the process went a little something like this:

I first sketched out the composition in a simple black brush

Then I reduced to opacity of that layer to about 20% and set it to 'multiply' blend mode

On layers underneath my sketch reference, I filled in each shape with a block of colour (mostly on different layers for different colours/elements)

Then I added some fun details like the bird feathers and line patterns on the leaves

And then I went and added lootts of texture/shading layers (I always end up with so many layers 😅)

Then I added sparkles, and that's about it!

I really like the colour palette for this illustration, it's really bright and fun so I think I'll use it again.❤

Looks lovely Mimi! Do you have any advice for selecting a color palette like you did here?

I think lots of pracitse definitely helps, over time I've come to know the colours that I like to use the most and that I like the look of together. I have a video for Beautiful Bluebells about How To Use Colour that you might find helpful, it covers the basics of colour theory 😊❤
