Malcolm X (1992)

Comments

Beebel bob

Malcolm X tried warning about the “white liberals” for a long time. He said “White liberals are foxes, who also show their teeth to the Negro but pretend that they are smiling...".  On Liberals as the "Worst Enemy" Malcolm X argued that white liberals used their supposed support for civil rights to control, manipulate, and ultimately betray Black communities. He believed that if Black people were not tricked by the white liberal, they would better solve their own problems. He accused white liberals of using "tokenism"—small, symbolic concessions—to prevent real, systemic change. He famously stated, "You don't stick a knife in a man's back nine inches and then pull it out six inches and say you're making progress". Key Themes in His Criticism * Deceit: He believed liberals pretended to be allies to gain trust and political, "token" support. * Political Pawns: He argued that white liberals treated Black people as political tools to advance their own power against conservatives. * Opposition to True Change: He believed that when it came to major structural changes, white liberals would often refuse to go "too far".

Edgar Gonzalez

Man, the big man himself Black history month after all, only right to to watch a film about one of the most prominent, influential, and contrasting leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement. He was often portrayed as a polar opposite to Martin Luther King Jr. King as a nonviolent intergrationest and Malcom as the militant nationalist.

Cameron

Great information, but don't conflate "white liberals" of the 1960's to the 2020's. Todays liberals are astronomically more accepting of all backgrounds - race, religion, ethnicity, etc. Go to a college campus and you'll see a diverse group of people fighting for equality, not just white males who are capitalizing on a movement. It's a genuine uprising for equality, which is why there's been an orchestrated movement since the 70's from the corporate/billionaire class to take control of the political system to consolidate their wealth and power, and our current situation is the result.

Cameron

If I could recommend some movies - Tokyo Drift (of course, keep the ball rolling), Final Destination 2 (I know that was a runner up in a previous poll if you guys want a horror film), Kick-Ass (great action/comedy with a comic book feel and some actors you'll recognize), Talladega Nights (If you want another Will Farrell/John C Reilly film), and Role Models (a general comedy with a lot of actors you'll recognize), I think all these films would be pretty solid

Edgar Gonzalez

Well look at todays issues, with all the controversy of systematic racism, and all these liberal issues trying to fuel flames of hatred and mistrust. Malcom X was not wrong.

Karim

Perfect timing. Shoutout to the great Delroy Lindo!

Dustin

Really glad to finally get to this movie. Such a powerful movie. I still think Denzel was robbed for the best actor award that year. Al Pacino was good in Scent of a Woman, but Denzel was amazing in this.

Michael Noel

far as a tv series Ray Donovan

Jason Cooper

For the culture ✊🏾 #BlackHistoryMonth

Matt

Correct, most people forget that the parties switched ideologies around this time.

Matt

He was right at the time but Liberals of today are not the same as this time period.

Beebel bob

lol, you’re very wrong. The “party switch” is a myth that’s been debunked many many times. It just hurts you to see the leftists seen for what they really are.

Beebel bob

These issues then and now, are all because of the liberals, their destructive lies, and their misguided propaganda designed to keep people down and in a position for them to “help”

Dustin

You asked for TV series recs.... TV Shows You Should Watch: -LOST -ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT -PARKS & RECREATION -JUSTIFIED -CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM -IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA -VIKINGS -SCHITT'S CREEK -TWIN PEAKS

Kickinthescience

Denzel and Angela Bassett been in the game since the 80s and so far hasn’t had any scandals. They carry themselves well

Rebecca Karsner

Great film!! Denzel is so great in this!! I agree with Dustin that Denzel should have won Best Actor for this!! Glad we got this in for February!! Would love to see you guys do Fruitvale Station too!! 🤞😁

Poopy McDoodooface

Really good movie. Great reactions once again Asia & BJ . Suggestions for the next series: Silicon Valley, 2020, 6 seasons The Pacific 2010 10 part miniseries (about the war in the Pacific in WWII) (produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg who also produced Band of Brothers) The Offer 2022 10 part limited series (based on the crazy true story behind the making of The Godfather) It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 2005 17 seasons Godfather of Harlem 2019 4 seasons Modern Family. 2009. 11 seasons

Poopy McDoodooface

The parties never switched. That's the lie that the liberals and left always tout. The party that owned slaves, gave birth to the KKK, the party of Jim Crow, the party who was against every meaningful piece of legislation to give all Americans more liberty and freedom including giving women the right to vote and the civil rights act of 1964 is the Democrat Party. They are just as hateful if not more so today. Republicans freed the slaves, gave black people the right to vote, gave women the right to vote, and the Republican Congress passed the civil rights act of 1964 after Democrats tried to stop it with the longest filibuster in US history up to that time. Yes it was signed by LBJ but not before he made the racist comment "We'll have those #!$$%$ & voting Democrat for 200 years after this" There was never a party switch.

Missy Johnson

This movie is so moving, and Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett were so good when she was crying at the end was crazy. His wife was pregnant with twins when this happened i think.

Cameron

I'm sure no one wants this to turn into a political debate, but I feel obligated to correct misinformation for anyone who is reading this thread. Yes, the "Big Switch" between Democrats and Republicans did occur, beginning with the New Deal in the 30's in which African-Americans began voting Democrat over Republican for favorable economic policy (work programs, social safety net, etc.), and the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's in which white conservatives left the Democrat Party over social policy (rights for African-Americans). Nixon's team coined the "Southern Strategy" in the late 1960's as a as a way to merge disenfranchised white conservative voters into the Republican Party, and by the end of the "Reagan Revolution" the south went from being solid blue to solid red. Yes, the Democrat Party was the party of slavery. Yes, the Republican Party was the party of abolition. But this "Big Switch" has been endlessly studied. These parties have existed for nearly 200 years, ideological realignment will occur. People can argue over what other major factors drove this switch (rather than strictly economic/social policy), but to claim it never happened is objectively false. Again, the purpose of this post isn't to argue with people, but to combat misinformation/lack of context.

lets get more Dexter shows please. Dexter: "original Sin" season 1 reactions and then Dexter: "Resurrection" season 1 reactions after.

Those "playa" looking suits were looked at the way stereotypical pimp outfits would be looked at today....Comical and over the top. From today's perspective, it just looks like fine vintage clothing so I get why Asia liked the suits so much.

sb

FUN FACT: The gambling or "running numbers" in Harlem and Chicago's black neighborhoods is the inspiration for the modern day state lottery in America.

Great Reaction To A Film I Watched Twice On The Silver Screen, Owned On VHS And DVD! My Hat Goes Off To Spike Lee Who Fought Warner Brothers To Have This Film Made! When Production Went Over Budget Warner Bros. Wouldn't Fund Him! So Spike Called The Heavyweights In Black Entertainment, Bill Cosby,Janet Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Prince To Name A Few! Yes My Man Denzel Washington Was Robbed Of The BEST ACTOR At The Oscar's! But Other Than That This Is Still An Inspirational Film And I'm So Glad I Read The Book My Sophomore Yr. In H.S. Before The Film Came Out! Thank You Asia And BJ For Reacting To This Film! Stay Blessed and Peace! ❤️ ✌️

Jason Cooper

I just wanted to add, in the beginning when Malcolm was running numbers for Archie he didn't lie he really did hit the number ..... In the scene before Archie came looking for Malcom.... Malcolm had put a bet on 3 numbers, 821, 128, & 218..... And 821 was the one that hit..... Malcolm also talked about it in his Autobiography.......

sb

The woman should be "half his age plus 7" means if he"s 40,then 20 would be too young a woman for that man so add 7. If he's 30, 15 would be too young so you add 7 to be an acceptable/appropriate age gap which was only an example and wasn't meant to dictate what age the woman should be. Basically not too old and not too young.

Nicole

Shows I recommend "Welcome To Derry" (IT/Pennywise) and TrueBlood ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Mezz015

There’s another spike Lee movie called Do the right thing released just one year before Malcolm X and Menace 2 Society as two black history movies and for a tv there’s a new show called IT: Welcome to Derry it’s currently 8 episodes but there an hour long so it’ll be a quick lil tv show there currently in production for season 2

Rebecca Karsner

Parks and Recreation!! It's the sister show to The Office!!

Rebecca Karsner

Can't we just agree that Democrats and Republicans both lie and sell propaganda to serve the interests of the Elites? That is the truth.

Dan Gershgol

I love this movie. Another Denzel movie that I keep recommending is The Hurricane. It strikes the same type of chords.

itsRichErich

i feel like y'all never recognize Delroy Lindo even tho you've both reacted to soooo many movies with him in it🤣 ... west Indian archie in this" Malcolm X" movie, the alcoholic musician in "Sinners", Aaliyah's father in "Romeo must die", etc. Underrated actor imo.

Michele Pérez

Agree… personally, I have seen him in so many films and not know his name. I finally took it upon myself to know who he is and speak his name when I see him. This was an amazing film.

Rashad Walker

Been hoping yall would watch this!

Whatitdoo38

Next show should be Snowfall The boys

timemachineseven

Frasier. For the next TV series. Underrated series from the 90s. Sitcom.

Robin

Great film! Happy BHM!! TV Show Recs /Completed Series Schitts Creek Modern Family Shameless Mad Men Succession

Rebecca Karsner

Parks and Recreation for your next show!!! 😁😁

Rashad Walker

The 3rd act of this film up until Malcolm death was heavy

Darth Brooks

Never watched it and The Office was fantastic! So good I feel lost now with no reactions left 😂

Rebecca Karsner

I am so glad you loved The Office!! I know it's such a comfort show for me!! Yes Parks and Recreation is just as hilarious and the cast is awesome!! Ron Swanson is the man, the myth, and the legend on that show!! Lol The show was created by the guy who plays Dwights cousin, Mose. Id also love for them to do Schitts Creek in honor of Catherine O'Hara 😭😭 She was so funny on that show.

Darth Brooks

I've seen Ron Swanson clips and I adore Nick Offerman as a human. Seen the "Come Back" blooper clip too lmao! I have never seen Schitts Creek either but I love Catherine in everything may she RIP.

Rashad Walker

The scene with denzel and Angela arguing about opening his eyes was one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in a film. It felt so raw real and authentic. I didht see denzel when I watch this i see him as Malcolm and he should of won an Oscar

Rashad Walker

The actress who played Laura is Theresa Randle , she was in the bad boys films and super hill

KingMoor

Dope! Judas and the Black Messiah would be another great one.

Rebecca Karsner

Omg that was hilarious!! Chris Pratt had some great bloopers... and OMG one of the funniest lines in the show was improvised by him too. Schitts Creek is so good. Catherine O'Hara's accent on the show is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. I'm still really upset about her passing. 😢

Dustin

Delroy Lindo is an amazing actor. He's always been overlooked but I'm so glad he's finally getting due recognition with an Oscar nom.

Nicole Orlando

Where is ST season 5? Did I miss it? Or y'all haven't watched it yet? 👀

Poopy McDoodooface

Another great series suggestions is Yellowstone 2018 5 seasons

BillBrad

Great movie and about 95% accurate. They just left out some stuff. If you read the autobiography you'll see it's pretty close almost word for word. The place where Malcom was killed 165th street and Broadway in Manhattan the Audubon Ball Room is now a chase bank and a BBQ joint. That is a travesty! There is nothing there about Malcom not even a plaque.

Kyndu

Great Reaction. For some reason, in the opening dance scene, I was waiting for the Gym for to open and everyone to fall into the pool. It's a Wonderful life!!!

RollingAcres47

Try being a straight, white, Christian man or being Jewish and shout that out on a college campus and see how accepting they are. According to Forbes, 83 billionaires supported Harris in 2024, while 52 backed Trump. Can you explain that? There is no "billionaire class" that all votes the same way, they're still individual people capable of independent thinking. They're a small group of hyper-successful, super competitive people with egos that are off the charts. They got to where they got by beating the competition; it's ingrained in them. That's the reality.

RollingAcres47

Naw mix it up...The Office took like 5 months. A different style/genre of show, then Parks & Rec later in my opinion.

PacPimpChadRIP

That most definitely was Al Sharpton 1:34:00

Mami's Gatos

Its funnier than the office. The jokes are more quick witted and less realistic storyline than the office. Rashid Jones is also in it too. #Ron Swanson for president 🙌

Mami's Gatos

Always wanted to watch mad men but they always want you to pay 3$ to stream each episode

Robin

It’s on HBO Max now so it’s free with subscription and totally worth the watch. You’ll enjoy it.

Robin

Oohhh True Blood is so crazy, I would totally watch along!!

Robin

I second Modern Family!

Robin

I second Schitts Creek it’s so good and only 6 seasons!!

Robin

I agree. Parks and Rec did not hit the same for me. I never could get past season 2. 😏

Nicole

Yesssss I would love for them to watch it

FLORIDABOYYY

the guy that mentored him is in a good movie with omar epps "first time felon"

Poopy McDoodooface

I'm pretty positive AI didn't exist in 1992. It was really Al playing the part of a street preacher.

PacPimpChadRIP

I believe that’s what I said. You may want to read my comment again.

Willie Oaxaca

A good movie, but it is full of inaccuracies and has been understandably criticized by Amiri Baraka and Dick Gregory. A good movie though.

Richard Zinns

I don't know if you're aware, but Al Freeman Jr., who played Elijah Muhammed in this movie, had previously played Malcolm X in the TV miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. In the early scene where Malcolm and Shorty are acting out a movie scene ("you used to be a big shot"), they're doing the climactic scene of the James Cagney character's death in The Roaring Twenties, from 1939. What I didn't notice when this movie first came out, but that really struck me when I watched it with you, was how, after wall-to-wall nonstop musical numbers playing throughout the movie, all musical accompaniment suddenly stops at the end of the Sam Cooke song when Malcolm is at the Audubon Ballroom preparing to speak, and you feel the silence like a harbinger of doom. What did strike me the first time I saw this movie, however, was how perfectly it fit with Oscar Mandel's wonderful 1961 book A Definition of Tragedy, which I had read it college. Mandel says that tragedy involves a protagonist who commands our "earnest good will," and who embarks on a project which in its nature involves his inevitable failure and destruction. Malcolm's attainment of any sort of broader awareness is only enabled by his association with the Nation of Islam, but that very awareness ultimately requires him to go beyond the Nation of Islam, which he cannot do with bringing on his own assassination. Leaving a cult, especially when you have played a large role in its success, will always cause it to turn on you, so the very thing that enabled his rise guarantees his fall, pretty much as Mandel describes in his book.

Tv series: i reccomend to watch Andor

Paul

wow..... what a man... what a time... from Jesus to Malcom X they kill all the great men who tell the truth... and also what the US could've been, destroyed by the CIA... from JFK to Donald Trump unbelievable.... all these great men, Martin as well, all died for a purpose still to be realised, I truly believe that... inspirational....

Kyndu

"JFK"

MoShou

This was a great watch first time being here. You guys are great 😁
