Imagine this... an M/M Hurling smut romance. Just putting that out into the universe! I think Ilya felt safe in that moment, nestled with Shane. For me, that bathroom scene and the last sex scene felt really abusive.

Eric Nord

Completely agree that Ilya ignored Shane because he was entirely focused on winning the cup.

SoloMio

These are young guys filled with testosterone and figuring things out. For me those scenes were super hot.

SoloMio

Great reaction, pauses and all. One thing I took away from Shane's face as he and his buddies watched Ilya's team win the cup was almost like a Mona Lisa smile, where the intention behind her expression isn't definitive. Is Shane happy? Sad? Unsure? Given where he is at with this stuff, I see his face as simply a mix of emotions he can't sort out just yet. The actor did a great job with that scene.

Eric Nord

Yes. A full-on cluster-f**k of emotion. He's happy for Ilya; possibly a bit jealous; longing to be with him again; sad, hurt, and maybe a bit angry that he hasn't responded; frightened of his feelings for him; and terrified someone will notice. However, the facial expression of Shane that destroys me every single time is in the bathroom when he says, "And if you win?" and then looks at Ilya in a way that just screams "I would do anything for you." while also pleading "Please be gentle with my heart."

The ending of ep02, from the bathroom scene and on is the worst part of the show for me. I saw your pain as well, and I feel similarly. The line "I want you to suck my dick" in that context is so off for me. I think your analysis of it is insightful. Ilya has been locked in to hockey and protecting himself from feelings and the vulnerability he felt in their last encounter. I would never have let Ilya get away with behaving like that if I were Shane, and I guess it says something about how down bad he is that he does. Then it proceeds into that sex scene with some dom/sub dynamics that I also personally don't like, which adds to this being the worst part of the show for me. I get that there's some decent storytelling going on here, but it's hard to feel sympathy with any of them at this point, because they're both acting like idiots.

Sam Ham

Yep, some people defend it, but viewed on its own its not good. For me in this scene ilya is he classic fuck boy that caught feelings, gor scared and then shaved them down deep and then played the the other person emotionally to feel powerful. Very insecure imo. Thanks for your comment Audun and thanks for supporting! :)

Here’s the thing. I get not liking the dynamics and Ilya’s actions in the end of this ep. But first, there has to be some conflict and grown. This is based (very accurately) on a romance book and this is sort of what it is in that genre. Second, without it, there is no payoff. Should everyone communicate fully and authentically? Sure. But that isn’t realistic for romance story telling OR real life. Making mistakes, miscommunication, being an asshole to people in your life? Yeah, that’s life. I get disagreeing with how Ilya acts but I don’t get not liking a show because of this? Do people only watch shows where people act perfectly all the time? We get this so that when we see Ilya in 5 & 6, we really see and FEEL the growth. Also, connecting thru sex early in a relationship is very accurate to the human experience as well. This show is a beautiful journey. Enjoy the journey!

I will also mention that Connor Storrie said that one thing he took away from this story was that everyone is going thru a lot in their own life/head. That’s so important in life and in this show. Our actions and feelings don’t occur in a vacuum. They are shaped by what has happened in our lives and is happening in our lives as we move thru the world. This is shown so beautifully in this show but we have to be willing to take it all in, imperfections and all, and see the human experience, as messy as it is.

WhitB

None of this is directed at your reaction specifically. I think you leave space for individual experiences. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

Vegas bathroom scene = hands down one of my favourite scenes of the show. Subtext and things unspoken 100%. The acting by both is brilliant, but Shane's journey from mad to sad is so beautiful

Your recap of Ilya's journey is spot on. I literally just said "oh my god" and came here to the comments .. I've watched a lot of reactors, (its awesome watching people fall in love with this show) and you're the first person who nailed some of the key plot points for him at this stage . Ilya's actions at the end of this episode are pretty toxic. But I always keep in mind the context - these characters are 22/23 years old right now. They have no mentors or support system (in terms of their sexuality). They sure as heck wouldn't have anyone around to teach them about healthy emotional and sexual communication. The culture of Ice Hockey is hypermasculine and homophobic. Russia is dangerous for Ilya. Shane is autistic - and has no idea , he's just Shane - but even if someone doesn't know that about themselves they still live it. Glad you're enjoying the journey. I'm sure you enjoyed the rest. Also glad I saved watching your reactions until you'd watched it all. I'm enjoying the binge :)

Mike

I am impressed with your peceptive skills when Scott reacted to the talk of gays in Russia.
