The Last of Us: Part II | Knockback, Episode 287

It may only be about five years old, but The Last of Us: Part II is quite easily one of the greatest games of all-time. Thus, it not only deserves its own episode of KnockBack, but a seven-ish hour one, the longest show in Last Stand history to date. Divisive even before it came out -- but absolutely dripping with style, message, and storytelling -- TLoU2 is a tale about endless violence and cyclical revenge, the kind that you simply can't back away from. The deeper Ellie and Abby fall into their timeless feud, the less they gain and the more they lose. But they just can't help themselves. They refuse to. It's at the heart of what makes this game so incredibly great, and perhaps what makes it so very controversial, too. There's little else to say, other than that the Brothers Moriarty wanted to give love to one of gaming's most phenomenal adventures. Click play for the result... Had to do a double take at that runtime

JoshM

Holy what... SEVEN!?

Dakota

Omg I am so excited to see this 😭😭

Dakota

AND ITS SEVEN HOURS??

AricTheRed

Holy shit. Seven hours is legendary. The LSM community are all climaxing right now. 😍 Lol. So happy Knockback is back. For us OGs, please don’t ever get rid of it, Col. I don’t care how low the traffic gets. It’s a show for the real ones.

Twreck

I was gutted when I ran out of episodes and discovered you weren't still doing this series. I was working at Amazon and just plowed through the whole thing. So glad it's back.

Joe B

7 Hours My Brother in Christ, you wanna run that shit by me again?

Richard Feliciano

Hoolllyy fuuuuu seven hours is some crazy ish. I played the the first half of tlou 2 and never finished it. I'm buying the ps5 upgrade tomorrow and replaying to finish it this time just to want to be fully indulged in a seven hour knockback with the moriarty bros. Much love and keep going.. ps. Haven't gamed in probably 10 months or more. Perfect excuse to get back into it now. Godspeed LSM for now until forever

Armando

Today when i woke up and i refreshed my podcast app, i rejoiced in happiness when i saw the SEVEN hours podcast that was waiting for me. It's gonna be great as we wait for the tv show. Thanks guys!

Nick O

I'm only haflway atm but this is a 10/10 conversation about it all thus far. Thanks for taking the time to play it again and do this.

Mysterious Narrator

I agree that games are long. TLOU2 is long. I also believe you shouldn't play games for 10+hour sessions. Witcher 3 for instance, most quest are roughly 90 minutes. I had an amazing experience doing a quest per session. Like a TV series. I dont always want binge content. It causes fatigue. TLOU2 2 is best played in sessions for each day.

Michael Thew

Seven is a beautiful name for a kid

Dimitreus Newell

I was like oh, hell yeah! Finally Dagan gets to experience TLOU2....then happily did a double take to see that it was a 7 hour episode as well! Diving in! :D

Josh Gamez

She's a chunky girl. LFG!!

Mike D

much like the game itself, im thinking- will this podcast ever end?

Nick O

Nothing changed my opinion by the end. Although wasn't the sniper Tommy? I'm surprised neither of you picked that up if so.

Matthew Cooper

Yeah, that gave me a chuckle. That was the payoff from Tommy giving Ellie the shooting lesson in the flashback that Colin and Dagan were looking for. I could get someone playing the game once and missing Tommy being the sniper, even though you see him pretty clearly in the cutscene that ends the confrontation. It's funny that Colin's played the game 3 times now and didn't see that. Too busy taking notes during the cutscene I guess.

Shawn

I came in the comment expecting everyone to be shitting on the subject matter and the fact that it’s 7 hours. I’m so glad to be wrong. Keep up the great content guys I can’t wait to listen to this for the entire week!

Sam

I have long long waited for this episode - finally Colin going in on Part II. Next to no talk about the situation surrounding its release. I am a few hours into this but I think this may be the pinnacle of Part II conversation - especially in the podcast space, such a breath of fresh air to hear this phenomenal game be spoken about for what it is - a phenomenal game.

Sam

In this Colin mentions “this is what he wants to do” - referring to deep dives into the contents of a game. I would love a series purely on this, I know we have summon sign or spoiler cast but true deep dives - not all of them can be 7 hours because not all games are The Last Of Us Part II. I feel there is a space here however.

Matthew Cooper

This was a great way to handle a game like TLoU 2. I haven't listened to the original pair of spoilercasts Colin & Chris did since they went originally went up, but I remember thinking at the time that they were kind of weak and didn't really dig in deep into the game like it requires. I like both TLoU games a great deal and have played through them both many times. I think Part 1 is the overall better experience. Part 2 has better gameplay, but I think the plot is quite a bit weaker. It relies on too many conveniences. The dual love triangles was just...kinda lame, lulz... The first time I played, I remember during Abby day 1, how it felt like I was playing some other game entirely. Not only is there a character change, but most of Abby's Seattle story is totally unrelated to what the plot has been up to that point, it feels too disjointed. The game is also too long, but I almost feel like the Santa Barbara chapter is included because Naughty Dog had no definitive plans to make any more TLoU content and they wanted to go ahead and tell that story now. I actually feel like this game does not scream out for a sequel. The story feels complete to me. I don't even know where the story would necessarily go from here. Part 1 ended with more of a setup for another chapter compared to Part 2.

SmashingSuccess

I came to see if anyone commented on this already. Funny thing to miss

4:35:19 The explanation to why they are at the hospital is in Ellie's Journal once the St. Mary's Hospital scene starts. In short, Ellie states she thought she could move on from the Firefly's but can't and sneaks out from Jackson to go back and investigate. I think she even states in the journal that she left a note for Joel before she left, hence why he shows up in distraught

Jordan Falduto

Popping this on while I give Bob and Marlene a shot on No Return ❤️

Caleb Greer

Listened to the whole thing. Thanks for getting me through the work day. Love KnockBack.

Nolan Fitzpatrick

Thank you! Man how did Colin not pick this up. Honestly you can tell it’s Tommy on replays before you push him into the water. The long blond hair and the leather jacket. Other than that great pod. Love the game too! And love that they went 7 hours.

four24twenty

This was the most emotionally wrought video game I ever played. I remember by the end thinking I never wanted to play it again. Stoked to hear you guys break it down, it's been almost 5 years now.

Jake Whitaker

An interesting note is that they spent roughly 5 hours talking about the Ellie gameplay section and only 2ish on Abbie

Aaron Anderson

Were Col and Dag not realizing the sniper was Tommy? It’s so interesting sometimes because they picked up things I missed but something’s even slipped by them on multiple playthroughs.

Chuck Rude

A friendly reminder that God of War 2018 was elected by Patreon poll for a Knockback episode 👀 Would love to see Degan’s thoughts on it

MJ SKA BOI

Finally!!! I’m 3d late to this release but what a nice surprise! Thanks for sharing :)

The gremlin in Dustin's thumb

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, guys. I listened to the whole thing non stop on my day off and swear it wasn't 7 hours. I would love to hear your guys speculation on where the 3rd game could go if we ever get it

Hunter Norris

Almost thought I was misremembering the game when listening to that part. I was like the sniper was Tommy right??

Justin O'Reilly

This is great. Thanks for the Dan Carlin length deep dive!

Mario Diosdado

It wasn't a random Joel, they introduced themselves as Joel and brother Tommy. Abby and co were looking in the area because they knew this. It was obvious that this is the Joel they were looking for.

Marvinarviin

Listening to this, I realised that Dagan and Colin do not know Tommy was the sniper that was facing Abby & Manny. Dagan was talking like he definitely didn’t what happened to the sniper after falling into the water. When Colin had the chance to blow Dagans mind, he skip to the next part of the story. But yeah, it was Tommy that killed Manny lol

Reese Redmond

Just play Lost Legacy brother. It's so much better.

YaBoyStevieJay

I’m glad this episode exists because the previous episodes with Chris were way too negative. This is one of the greatest games of all time and deserves to be gushed about.

Jake Banks

7+ Hours? That was a bloody treat, mate!! I'm a landscaper & this got me through the whole day. Brilliant! Not sure why people complain. Just break up the podcast throughout the week.

Kody Kindig

I didn't feel like Tommy was misdirecting Ellie. I took it as what she said to him pushed him to take off.

Kody Kindig

Jeffrey Wright played Isaac in game too, didn't he?

Trevor Deal

Not realizing the sniper was Tommy by both Colin and Dagan is wild. I mean it's clear as day. You have an entire sniping lesson by Tommy as foreshadowing that he's trying to then snipe you. Also... look at him lol.

Trevor Deal

I swear that is the fastest 7 hours ever. Loved it. I think going from top to bottom with a game like this was a must, truly. Great way to do it.

Beef Burka

Colin said earlier in the episode that Manny was killed by a Seraphite, so Colin didn't know either

Marvinarviin

Yes exactly. Neither of them know.
