I'll Confess This: You're My Tragedy | Sacred Symbols, Episode 360

The last couple of weeks for Bungie have been nothing short of catastrophic, calling into question whether their upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has any chance at all in finding market success. We've long discussed whether Sony should have bought Bungie at all (they shouldn't have), but now that they're so deeply invested, how do they get the team out of this mess? And what does all of this hullabaloo -- about stolen art, poorly-reviewed gameplay, and lackluster audience reaction -- say about the team's future, full stop? Meanwhile, things aren't much better north of the border, where Quebec-based Haven recently parted ways with founder and once-famous producer Jade Raymond, who has now left three different teams without any sort of release. Is Fairgame$ DOA? Maybe not, but we have lots of new information on the recent closed test of the game under the moniker Project Hearts, and... well... it's not sounding great. Also: MLB: The Show is seemingly getting a mobile release, PlayStation Stars is going away unceremoniously, Stellar Blade 2 is in active development, Xbox's Hellblade II is coming to PS5, Kojima's Physint is at least five more years away, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Keeping in mind Sony's typical naming conventions, what will PlayStation 6's controller be called? Do we also find delight in Darth Vader's AI voice in Fortnite? Is the PS5 Pro truly worth purchasing before prices likely go up? Has Chris ever seen a ghost? Follow the hosts! The Sony Rewards program that gave you points based on different trophies you earned was the best. I redeemed many points for $20 PSN codes that way. Though the My Name Is Mayo-likes broke that system, you were getting rewarded for actually playing games and popping trophies.

Yup, I actually used that program, I never earned squat through Playstation Stars because I have no reason to pay $80 a year for PS+

Haha got to that part of the show and the guys don't remember it. So approximately: bronze trophies = 10 points, silver = 25, gold = 50, platinum = 100 points. It tracked your PSN and kept a tally. You then shopped an online catalog with PSN cards, physical games, Sony Vaio tv (unreasonable amount of points) and such. I think $20 PSN was 2,000 points?

To me the Expedition 33's biggest influences seem to be Lost Odyssey and FFX. Would be cool if a remaster of the former came to PlayStation so more people, including Colin, could experience it. Such a good game. I do not get FFXIII vibes from it at all. That's actually an insult to the game.

I bought a PS5 Pro about a month ago, and I would say that I generally don't recommend it. There's a few questions to ask to really determine though. First, are you an avid Digital Foundry watcher? Second, how big is your TV and how close do you sit? Third, how are you with FOMO? If you watch every video DF puts out, sit really close to a 77" tv, and hate to miss out on the best experience, yeah the PS5 Pro is probably for you. If you only watch the occasional DF video, sit a reasonable distance from a 50" tv, and can live with others having a better experience than you, stick with the base PS5. The more of your field of vision that your tv is taking up will determine how much the extra sharpness of PSSR or extra resolution will matter. Do you think games are looking kind of soft on your base PS5 or do you not really think of it? I think PSSR is kind of a mixed bag right now, it's an improvement in some games but has drawbacks. In Last of Us for example, I think it over sharpens the image quite a big and causes some other artifacts. AMD's FSR4 technology is actually pretty good though, so I think PSSR will get a lot better in future games.

I am one of those people who cares a lot about FPS and Res yet does not game on PC (I know, I"m insane). Never owned a PS console. Series X and S household and large library on xbox. But, I have thought about getting the PS5 Pro. I think there is a category of gamers, a very small one, like me, who maybe would look at this as a good first PS console. Still, I'm in no rush or sense of urgency and in the end I'd prob rather upgrade my tv before I get the PS5 Pro. (currently on 65'' 2019 Samsung Q70 (QLED), and does 1440 @ 120 hz). Or my sound setup (currently a Samsung 5.1 soundbar which cannot even pass 120 hz signal to TV- I'd like to get a Denon receiver and a set of 5.1 speakers).

Colin talking about going to the doctor and the his physical reminded me of my buddies old gamertag... StomachToucher He must have been a primary care physician!

I can’t watch it either says I have to sign in to confirm I’m not a bot and it just doesn’t bring me to yt

You know Battlefield faced similar criticism when they cut their single player PVE component years ago similar to how Bungie did with Marathon. Even if it's a small component it should be there for the players that care specially when so many players have become Bungie fans through their PVE content.

Dustin, your comment about “all this money we’ve pumped into this game” reminds me that most people don’t really understand what a games budget pays for. And it’s the main reason why Concord couldn’t have even cost $100m. It just isn’t possible. A games budget pays for the full time staff’s yearly salaries and any contract employees, whether hourly or an agreed upon amount. We know from the devs that concord was in development for 6 yrs, the first 3 years they were 8 people, the next 2 they went between 40-50, then PS bought them and they went to 120 full time devs. And only 1982 people worked on it in total (mostly cheap contractors from Asian countries). Haven being in Canada means the average salary is $90k CAD or $65k USD. These live service games do not cost Sony much

Well, it is not a big mystery, why don't they do other things than "extraction-like" titles - why compete with money cows alike COD and Fortnite? Those games cannot be competed with. They have too much of a grip on the gaming scene. PlayStation benefits from them greatly.

Germanos

Yeah I wonder what would happen if PS just released the TLoU multi game, and didn't plan any support for it... "Dead game" "Dead game" "Who plays this shit?" "Dead game" "Dead game" "There's nothing here" "Dead game" Dudes, people played for 100h of Monster Hunter in the first week and started rioting online as there was not enough content.

It is fun to listen about the success ratio discussion, as it reminds that not many are aware that the failure ratio of startups is around 3%, with 1 in 5 shutting down within the first 12 months.

Love you Randy! <3 Tell them! XD Also, a fantastic write-in from Eddie about the reality of game prices.

Last night while playing Expedition 33 I was thinking some aspects reminded me of FF13. It's funny hearing that Colin had the same thought, since no one else seems to have mentioned it.
